Hi, thanks so much for looking at this.

About 2 weeks ago I was infected with Smitfraud. I followed the steps in your self-help thread (including removal) and it seemed to work.

However, recently I am receiving a Java security warning when I restart the computer. It says that the application's digital signature has been validated by a trusted source and asks if I want to run the application. The name is hipointRT; the Publisher is HIPOINT Ltd., S.A.; and it's from http://dinet.info. A google serch suggests that this may install Smitfraud on my machine?

Also, AVG has been finding instances of Generic 2.AVS, but each time I choose heal and the dialogue closes.

I reran the SmitfraudFix Search today and here are the contents of rapport.txt:

Thanks Ken, all symptoms are gone. Great news. I will uninstall Edwido via Add/Remove. Do I simply delete Killbox, ATF Cleaner, and the Smitfrud folder? Thanks again to Ken and Tom Coyote! My machine is taking 7 minutes to run through the start-up tasks. I had hoped that cleaning this mess up would help but it hasn't. I think the slowdown may have occurred when I installed Windows Desktop Search (beta 2). It's not working anyway so I'm going to try uninstalling and trying Copernicus Desktop Search. There's nothing you can see that would justify a 7 minute start-up is there? Thanks,
sendtomaz, :D

A couple of points …

* You can drag Killox to the trash.

* ATF Cleaner is yours to keep, run it every few weeks to keep your system clean from all the temp file build up.

* Ewido is a trial and a great program, you can keep it after the trial, you can still check for updates, run the scans and remove what it finds, you will just lose the background guard feature which you should disable now anyway…takes a lot of resources.

These are all starting when windows starts, you can remove them with HJT and run them manually when needed. You can always restore the ones you want with HJT by opening HJT> View the List of Backups and restore whatever you want. This is just a suggestion and totally your call.

Your Java is out of date and leaving your system vunerable. Update your Java:
  • Go to Start > Control Panel > Add-Remove Programs.
  • Search in the list for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment)

It should have an icon next to it:

    [external image: Posted Image]
    Select it and click Remove.
  • The current version can be downloaded from Sun here:
    http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
Scroll down the page to 'Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 8 and press the Download' button. On the new web page, click the Accept License Agreement' button.
Then select 'Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language' in the Windows Platform
area just below the Accept button.

Thanks again Ken, It was a lot of work but by following suggestions on the links you provided brought my Startup time down from 7 minutes to 3 :D . Does "disabling the background guard feature" for Edwido mean "set Resident Shield to inactive"? I hope so, that's what I did. There are certain sites that I allow to store cookies on my machine. Will using ATF to remove cookies remove these cookies as well? Thanks so much for your assistance.
sendtomaz :D

Yes, thats correct.

Does "disabling the background guard feature" for Edwido mean "set Resident Shield to inactive"

We like to use ATF Cleaner on logs that have been heavily infected to make sure everything is flushed out where some of this garbage can have bits and pieces leftover. Yes, it will remove cookies if you dont uncheck that option.

Another safe cleaner to use, this is free also. What you can do with this one is open up the program and go to Options> Cookies and all your cookies will load in the left window, just move the ones you want to keep to the Right window.

If you don't want the Yahoo Toolbar, be sure to uncheck it during installation

Thanks for the clarification Ken.

I'm continuing to do research to try and speed up my machine.

I'm considering removing the following entries but am nervous to do so without your blessing. You have been patient so far, so if this request goes beyond what is reasonable please let me know.

You do realize that your taking me away from the Florida vs Kentucky game :D

Not a problem, glad to help

This is what I would do.

We need to disable the Tea Timer in Spybot Search and Destroy as to not interfere with the fix.
  • Open Spybot and go to Mode> Advanced Mode> Tools> Resident and take the checkmark out of Tea Timer

You can remove all this safely.

Your call to remove this one
O23 - Service: Netropa NHK Server (Nhksrv) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\Nhksrv.exe

nhksrv.exe is a process that belongs to DELL and Compaq systems. It is used to halt any configured hotkeys while the screensaver is running. This program is a non-essential system process, and is installed for ease of use.

This may or may not speed things up, but give it a shot. What you should do is go through your Add-Remove Programs, don't remove any critical programs, but programs that you installed and never use , give them the boot, junk builds up quite rapidly on your system and this is what tends to slow you down.

Yep, spent some time clearing out via Add_Remove earlier.

Thanks for the latest response, I just cleaned everything out.

I think my machine is in OK shape now. So, over and out. Thanks so much to yourself and Tom Coyote.
