Critical System Error

Hi there,

My laptop appears to be riddled with viruses (actually it's my girlfriend's laptop but I'm sure I'm going to get the blame for this!) as I am getting Critical System Error messages willy nilly….though I've run 2 types of antivirus scans (PCGuard - came with Telewest bundle, and Norton Antivirus) both of which tell me I have no viruses?! Also when I open up Internet Explorer it takes me to a Security Center page though I'd set the default to Google. Oddly, when I try and type Google in the Address Bar it defaults back to the Security Center page…..and I'm sure this page is up to no good if it tries to stop me from getting out of it…..though thankfully I appear to be able to navigate away if I enter an address other than Google.

As instructed I've run Hijackthis and attached the log below. Any assistance in sorting this mess out would be greatly appreciated as these constant messages are driving me round the bend!

Running the Clean

Warning: running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Please print out or copy these instructions/tutorial to Notepad as the internet will not be (while in Safe Mode) available to you at certain points of the removal process. Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes.

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.
______________________________

Open the SmitfraudFix Folder, then double-click smitfraudfix.cmd file to start the tool.
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.

[external image: Posted Image]

The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question "Replace infected file ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually. Reboot in Safe Mode.

The tool will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

I hope this helps.

Thanks a million for all your help so far. You're a lifesaver.
CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run Hijack This!
Click "Do a systen scan only".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [f3OivdStb] C:\WINDOWS\ndcninh.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Á³# L"h'þ9Óœð3rÅWC:\Program Files\ISTsvc\istsvc.exe] C:\WINDOWS\ndcninh.exe

Then click "Fix checked" and close Hijack This!.

Reboot in "safe" mode.

Delete all of the following noted (in red) file(s)/FOLDER(s) you can find:

c:\windows\ndcninh.exe <— file

C:\Program Files\ISTsvc <— FOLDER

Some malware files may be "hidden".
Be sure to show hidden files when looking for these file(s) and/or folder(s).

Reboot in normal mode and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis! log file into this thread. :)
I feel like the we are reaching the end?

I fixed the 2 files found in Hijackthis though I couldn't find any trace of the file or folder mentioned when I booted in safe mode. I hope that's not a bad omen.

I don't have any error messages at all now……which is fabulous…..and I'm almost feeling calm again…..either that or I'm just too tired to care as it's nearly 3:30am.

Anyway, new hijackthis log attached….

Many many thanks.
So far so good.

I want to check one more file.

Please go to these free online file checkers:

Kaspersky Online File Scanner

Jotti Online File Scanner

VirusTotal Online File Scanner

And submit this file for a virus scan:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\WL.exe

Let me know if it's "infected".

If it comes up "clean", and you're not having any problems, you should be "good to go".
:)
Ah! Could this be where it all goes wrong? There is no WL.exe file in C:\Windows\System32….or anywhere for that matter. This isn't a good sign is it?!
