[palcosmo]

I cannot access google on my laptop while I'm at home. When I use my laptop at work, it's no problem. In fact, my home desktop can also access google with ease.

Maybe I'm missing something obvious, but this is what I've tried:

- Scanned with Ad-Aware
- Scanned for viruses (AVG 7.5)
- Examined system32/etc/hosts file
- Checked (wireless) router for blocked sites
(Though, really, I didn't necessarily do any of the above correctly...)

I've also just run a hijackthis scan, in case it means something to somebody:

Any suggestions? I'll admit that this is driving me a little crazy. -- Sadly, it's not just google that's effected, really. Anything that uses google-analytics is either slowed to a crawl or just won't load.

Not seeing a lot in your log, so would like to dig a little deeper.

Firstly, can you: Make a folder on the desktop , name it "HJT" locate "HijackThis.exe" copy and paste the file into the new folder you created on the desktop "HJT"
If we need a backup, shoud things not go as we would like, we have our backup.

Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune and save it to your Desktop.
Do not use yet!


Run HijackThis, select Do a system scan only and place checks against the following entries (if they are still present)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE

WITH ALL OTHER WINDOWS CLOSED Click on Fix Checked and exit

Search and delete files
We need to do a search now.Go to

• Start
• Search
• For Files and Folders
• Expand Search Options, check Advanced Options, check Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search Subfolders.
• Paste this into the Search for files and folders named box:
• ALCMTR.EXE
  

If any of these files are found please delete them.

Run ATF cleaner

• Double click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
• Check the following boxes:
  • Windows Temp
  • Current User Temp
  • All Users Temp
  • Temporary Internet Files
  • Prefetch
  • Recycle Bin
  • Java Cache
• The rest are optional - if you want to remove the lot, check Select All.
• Now click Empty Selected.
• When you get the Done Cleaning message, click OK.
  
• If you use Firefox browser.
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
  • If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
• If you use Opera browser.
  • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
  • If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.

Your Java is out of date Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:

• Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
• Scroll down to where it says " Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6".
• Click the "Download" button to the right.
• Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
• The page will refresh.
• Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
• Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
• Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
• Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
• Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
• Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
• Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
• Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

• The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
• Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
• Now click on Scan Settings
• In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
• Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
• Extended (If available otherwise Standard)
• Scan Options:
• Scan Archives
• Scan Mail Bases
• Click OK
• Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
• The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
• Now click on the Save as Text button:
• Save the file to your desktop.
• Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

A few things to help with possible threats in the future would be to download run and keep all these programs updated.
Adaware
spybot seach & destroy
spyware Blaster

Always keep windows patched and updated.
And it goes without saying do not open Email from someone you don't know.

And this is the error I get: "The connection has timed out The server at www.google.com is taking too long to respond. * The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few moments. * If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network connection. * If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web."

You Probably need to update your firmware for the router. Older firmware had issues with connecting to google. See how it goes and let me know.
