I am helping my girlfriend try to get rid of the "generic downloader.q" trojan that McAfee keeps finding.

Copy and Paste this post into a new text document or print it for reference

Step 1.

Please Note - You are running "HijackThis" from an unsafe location

To enable any backup we make to be stored safely I would like to recommend you Re-Download a copy of HJTsetup.exe from:
http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/HJTsetup.exe

Double click HJTsetup.exe to begin installation.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box uncheck the box to the left of Launch Hijackthis and then click Finish
Do this BEFORE you proceed!


Step 2.

First please disable the Windows Defender Real-time Protection,

Open Windows Defender
Click on Tools, General Settings.
Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.


Then download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Put a check next to Run VundoFix as a task.
  • You will receive a message saying vundofix will close and re-open in a minute or less. Click OK
  • When VundoFix re-opens, click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
  • Turn your computer back on.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt In you next reply.

Step 3.

Please Update your Sun Java console

Close any programmes you may have running, ESPECIALLY your web browser
Then using Add/Remove Select any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE) in the name and uninstall.
please note that All old versions of Java need to be removed as they are a security threat if left installed.

Reboot your computer Then CLICK HERE select the Download button next to "J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 8"

"Accept" the License Agreement Then choose the First download link Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language

Please note - You must Install this version Offline.


Step 4.

Clean your Cache and Cookies in IE:
Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab.
Click the "Delete Cookies" button and then the "Delete Files" button next to it.
When prompted, place a check in: "Delete all offline content", click OK.

Clean other Temporary files + Recycle bin:
Go to start > run and type: cleanmgr and click ok.
Let it scan your system for files to remove.
Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
Press OK to remove them.


Please now Use 'Internet Explorer' and run The Panda Online Scan
http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm

Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button.
A new window will open…click the Check Now button.
Enter your Country.
Enter your State/Province.
Enter your e-mail address and click send.
Select either Home User or Company.
Click the big Scan Now button.
If it wants to install an ActiveX component, allow it to.
It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a minute or two).
When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan.
When the scan completes, click the See Report button, then Save Report, and save it to your desktop.


Please Re-scan with HijackThis and post

Thank you for your response. We followed your recommendations and I am posting the results.

Ran VirtumundoBeGone and it found nothing.

Navigate to these Files/Folders then Right Click on and Delete these Bold Files/Folders:

Then Reboot your System…

These two disabled entries are Fine, these are showing because you Using a Third Party "Firewall & Anti-Virus"
Windows Security Center.AntiVirusDisableNotify:

You can if you wish "exclude" these from future Spybot detection:

You will need to Expand the detection if necessary (+ to the left of the detection).
Select the entries that you want to exclude by left clicking on it to highlight it.
Then right click on highlighted detection.
Select from the list of options in the menu.

Navigate to then Right Click on and Delete this Bold File:

Now Please Re-open Hijackthis
Click Open Misc Tools | Open Unistall Manager.
A list of the entries in Add/remove programs will appear.
Click on Save List…
The list will be saved as Uninstall_list.txt

Re-Scan with HijackThis and post The new HijackThis log & the Uninstall_list.txt

That's good news :)

I would like to recommend removing all P2P Software from your system as they are susceptible to malware infection if used in obtaining files from unknown sources, please note that More & More HijackThis logs are now being posted because of P2P related problems now that contain unknown malware on a system this leads to untold damage to the Registry that simply can't be repaired.


With everything running fine, then I recommend that you now "Disable" and then "Re-Enable" your System Restore
