Greetings,

I regularly run SpySweeper, SpyBot, and Spyware Doctor on my system. Two days ago, SS detected a file and a registry entry;

C:\WINDOWS\system32\wmhotfix.dll

HKLM\software\microsoft\windowsnt\currentversion\windows\||appint_dlls

and identified these as Trojan Maccess.

I had SpySweeper do its thing and remove the stuff it found.

I later remembered that I should probably disable System Restore, disconnect from the Internet, and run SpySweeper with my computer in Safe Mode. I did that.

I still wasn't convinced that all was well, so I downloaded the latest version of HjT that I could find, and am posting the log here. I am somewhat suspicious of items at 016 and 020, but I don't want to destroy my system. I don't want anyone else to, either. I would be most grateful for any advice and/or assistance you might be able to offer. Thank you for your time and attention.

New HJT log follows:

Welcome to the forum :wavey:

Disable Microsoft Windows Defender:
We need to disable your Microsoft Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
  • Open Microsoft Windows Defender. Click Start, Programs, Windows Defender
  • Click on Tools, General Settings.
  • Under Real-time protection options, unselect the Turn on real-time protection check box
  • Click Save
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

Download Killbox from here:

Killbox.zip © Option^Explicit

Unzip it, but don't run it yet.

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run Hijack This!
Click "Do a systen scan only".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {0BF43445-2F28-4351-9252-17FE6E806AA0} - (no file)

O20 - AppInit_DLLs: C:\WINDOWS\system32\wmfhotfix.dll

Then click "Fix checked" & close Hijack This!

Now, run Killbox.

In Killbox select "Delete on Reboot".

Paste the next line into the "Full Path of File to Delete" text box.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\wmfhotfix.dll

Click the red dot with the white X in it, in the upper right of Killbox, then click "Yes", and "Yes" again.

When the machine reboots, "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread. :)
I don't have Windows Defender installed. I had installed it some weeks back, but my system was so slow, and it gave me so many alerts concerning startup programs to be aapproved/disapproved, that I removed it. This was done well before today (when I generated the HJT logfile). I have no indications on my desktop or elsewhere that WD still exists on my system. If the log is informing you to the contrary (and it's on my system), what do I do then? Thanks for your help. fpj
If "Windows Defender" doesn't exist, add this to the list of items to "fix":

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Windows Defender] "C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MSASCui.exe" -hide

And continue with everything else I posted.

Just ignore the part about Disabling Windows Defender.
:)
I do find the installer for WD in my Desktop files (though the icon is gone from my desktop), and the following remnants of WD still on my system, as far as I can tell: mpasbase.vdm mpasdlta.vdm mpengine.dll some Quarantine files (sample of .txt below) QUARANTINE] ID={7FFFFFFE-0000-0000-1F21-1B0B2C35E1F2} VERSION=1.1508 RESOURCES=1 [TIMESTAMP] VALUE=0x1C6B33A1C8FA8EB [INFECTION_INFO] NAME=Unknown THREATID=2147483646 [RESOURCE1] SCHEMA=runkey NAME=HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\\SpySweeper SUBTYPE=value REGVALUE_TYPE=1 REGVALUE_SIZE=269 REGVALUE_DATA=220043003A005C00500072006F006700720061006D002000460069006C00650073005C0057006500620072006F006F0074005C00530070007900200053007700650065007000650072005C0053007000790053007700650065007000650072002E00650078006500220020002F007300740061007200740069006E0074007200610079000000 and a "File Tracker" file (.txt below) Copyright © 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp. # This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows. # This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each # entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should # be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name. # The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one # space. # Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual # lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol. # For example: # 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server # 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host 127.0.0.1 localhost and some other remnant stuff. I'm still not sure how to turn WD off, since my computer doesn't tell me it's "on." Sorry if I'm obtuse, but I'm sort of out of my league here. Thanks again, fpj
Please disable Ad-Watch, as it may hinder the removal of some HijackThis entries. You can re-enable it after your computer is clean.

To disable Ad-Watch:

1. Right click on the Ad-Watch icon in the system tray and select "Restore Ad-Watch".
2. At the bottom of the screen there will be two checkable items called "Active" and "Automatic".
3. Uncheck (red X) both items.

Disable SpySweeper:
You have SpySweeper installed. While this is a great program, we need to temporarily disable (not uninstall) the program because it might stop our fix.
Right click on the SpySweeper icon in your System Tray (near the clock).
From the pop up menu, left click on Shields, this will open the program at the same time.
Click the "Internet Explorer" tab and uncheck the following:
  • IE Favorites Shield
  • IE Security Shield
  • Broswer Helper Object (BHO) Shield
  • IE Hijack Shield
Click the "Windows System Shields" and uncheck the following:
  • Memory Shield
  • Spy Installation Shield
Click the "Startup Programs" tab and uncheck the Startup Items Shield

After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable SpySweeper again.

Those can also inhibit the changes we want to make.

(I missed those  )
i've followed your instructions. HJT generated a dialogue which I'll post at the end of this message.

Here's the current HJT log:

I re-enabled the shields after reboot. I hope this didn't complicate matters. the .dll seems to be gone, though this dialogue popped up during the HTJ run:

An unexpected error has occurred at procedure: modBackup_MakeBackup(sItem=O20 - AppInit_DLLs: C:\WINDOWS\system32\wmfhotfix.dll)
Error #5 - Invalid procedure call or argument

Please email me at [removed], reporting the following:
* What you were trying to fix when the error occurred, if applicable
* How you can reproduce the error
* A complete HijackThis scan log, if possible

Windows version: Windows NT 5.01.2600
MSIE version: 6.0.2900.2180
HijackThis version: 1.99.1
