I got a trojan that McAfee antivirus told me it couldn't remove. Now I keep having trouble with Microsoft Internet Explorer not responding. I have run Hijackthis and will post as required.
My Internet Explore keeps freezing up. I get a not responding note.
I suspect a Trojan that McAfee said it couldn't remove. Please look at my log and see if I have any malicious stuff in there.
Here is my log:

Welcome to the forum, please reply to this thread only by using the Add-Reply button and not the New Topic button or else your posts will be all over the forum and we wont be able to keep track of you.

Your log looks clean  What trojan did Mcafee say that you have.

Lets try a few things.

Run the trial of Ewido and make sure to post the report, it will show what it removed and also if something may be hidden that is not showing up on your HJT log

Download and install the 30 day trial of Ewido Anti-Spyware from HERE and save that file to your desktop.

* Once you have downloaded Ewido Anti-Spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
* Once the setup is complete you will need run Ewido and update the definition files.
* On the main screen select the icon Update then select the Update now link.
* Next select the Start Update button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
* Once the update has completed select the Scanner icon at the top of the screen, then select the Settings tab.
* Once in the Settings screen click on Recommended actions and then select Quarantine
* Under Reports
* Select Automatically generate report after every scan
* Un-Select Only if threats were found
* Close Ewido Anti-Spyware <– Do not run the scan yet.

Boot your computer into Safemode

* Go to Start> Shut Off your Computer> Restart
* As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly,
this will bring up a menu.
* Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to SAFEMODE
* Then press the Enter on your Keyboard

IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:

* Lauch Ewido-Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
* Select the Scanner icon at the top and then the Scan tab then click on Complete System Scan.
* Ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
* Once the scan is complete do the following:
* If you have any infections you will prompted, then select Apply all actions
* Next select the Reports icon at the top.
* Select the Save report as button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system
*** make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important
* Close Ewido

Reboot normally

Run this system cleaner

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.

Finnaly, do this…
This may take 15 minutes or so and you wont get any dialog back if it replaced a file or not, it will just close when done.
Click Start>Run, type in sfc /scannow, hit Enter.
Note: there is a space between sfc and /scannow
This should replace any corrupted/missing system files and will hopefully fix things. You may need your XP disc in your CD drive for this.

Let me see the Ewido report and a new HJT log.
Ken, first thank you for looking at this for me.
I didn't record the name of the Trojan McAfee said it couldn't eliminate. Sorry.

::Report end
Hello Johnl :D

How are things up in Hartford? I am down in Darien.

Your log still looks clean although sometimes this garbage hides from us.

Lets do this…

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing :
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

Open up Ewido and go to the Quarantine folder and delete it all, nothing you want to keep.

Look for this folder and delete the entire folder if its present.
C:\Program Files\SpyWareWall

If its present and wont let you delete it, you will have to boot to safemode.

A quick scan of Blacklight may uncover some bad files if there present.

Download and Save Blacklight to your desktop:
  • Double-click blbeta.exe
  • Then accept the agreement
  • leave [X]scan through Windows Explorer checked.
  • Click > scan then > next
  • You'll see a list of all items found. There will also be a log on your desktop with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (the xxxxxxx stand for numbers).
  • Copy and paste this log in your next reply.
  • Don't choose the rename option yet! I want to see the log first, because legitimate items can also be present there, such as "wbemtest.exe"

Then run the Free Online virus scanner from Panda Software, it wont remove anything but will give you a report to post into your next reply.

Let6 me see the Blacklight report and the Panda report

John,

Blacklight came up clean, and most of what Panda found was in Quarantine or they were cookies.

Run this other cleaner, I want you to run the Issues scan also to remove any bad entires in the registry.

If you don't want the Yahoo Toolbar, be sure to uncheck it during installation
Download and Install CCleaner
* Click on Run Cleaner
* Run the Issues Scan < When it asks you to backup the Registry..Say Yes
Tutorial for CCleaner

Why dont you have Mcafee run a system scan and see if it still picks up that entry, this time write it down and post it here so we can analyze what it may be.

ken :D
Ken, I ran CCleaner. I have run McAfee several times since getting the Trojan message. But it hasn't come up again. What it did the first time it found it was ask me if I wanted to remove it or quantine it. I tryed both but each time, it said it couldn't do either. But like I said McAfee hasn't picked up the Trojan since the first time. With everything you have had me do, it seems like it just isn't on my computer anymore. Perhaps having me run the sfc /scannow procedure with the Windows XP disk fixed the problem I was having with Internet explorer not responding. John
Thats good John :D Lets hope your back to normal. I am going to keep this thread open for you for a week or so in case you need to post back if that problem comes up again and we can dig deeper if need be.

Some tips for you

How did I get infected in the first place ? Read these links and find out how to prevent getting infected again.

Thanks for using Tom Coyote

Hope you have your rain gear handy, this weekend does not look good :(
Hi John,

Thats your option, I would, it keeps people from deleting critical files by accident. You may not need it again but if you do you can just enable it again.

Ewido is just a trial but the program is yours to keep, you can still check for updates, run the scans and remove what it finds, you will just lose the background guard feature after 30 days.

ATF Cleaner is yours also, it was written by one of the fine folks in the Malware Removal Community, I would run that about every two weeks or so to keep your system free of all the temp files and what not that tend to clog you down.
