Howdy all,
Have used HijackThis for years, love it but have run into a problem that I can't fix. I use Spybot Resident to monitor my Registry for entries and recently denied ITBarLayout. I went to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar and checked in \ShellBrowser, \WebBrowser, and \Explorer and only found t in \ShellBrowser and \Explorer. After removing these entries, all is OK with \Shell, but \explorer still gets populated when I open explore.exe.

Here is the entries from RegMon.
4.49207449 explorer.exe:324 QueryValue HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar\Explorer\ITBarLayout NOT FOUND
4.64829588 explorer.exe:324 SetValue HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar\Explorer\ITBarLayout SUCCESS 11 00 00 00 4C 00 00 00 …

I did a search on my hard drive and only have one instance of explorer.exe in my box in %windir%. the size is 1,050,624 bytes and created on march 25, 2005. This sounds like the proper Explorer.exe version.

have run NAV Corporate Version and spybot so far, neither of them seeing anything significant.

Here is my HijackThis log. Any suggestions?

blueshark006,

Welcome to the forum, sorry about the delay, being backlogged is an everyday experience.

Your log looks ok  I am not looking at anything bad on it in the way of malware or a virus.

Your Java is out of date and leaving your system vunerable. Update your Java:
  • Go to Start > Control Panel > Add-Remove Programs.
  • Search in the list for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment)

It should have an icon next to it:

    [external image: Posted Image]
    Select it and click Remove.
  • The current version can be downloaded from Sun Microsystems
  • Scroll down the page to 'Java Runtime Environment Version 5.0 Update 6 and press the Download' button.
  • On the new web page, click the Accept License Agreement' button.
  • Then select 'Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language' in the Windows Platform
area just below the Accept button.
Thanks Ken. Any thoughts on what is still trying to install the ITBarLayout? When I run RegMon to see what is installing that key, I only see explore.exe hitting the registry. The dates look OK on explorer.exe, could something be wrapping it? thanks again for the volunteer work! JV
blueshark006,

We need to disable the Tea Timer in Spybot Search and Destroy as to not interfere with the fix.
  • Open Spybot and go to Mode> Advanced Mode> Tools> Resident and take the checkmark out of Tea Timer

Download and install the 30 day trial of Ewido Anti Spyware to your desktop.
  • Once you have downloaded Ewido Anti-Spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need run Ewido and update the definition files.
  • On the main screen select the icon Update then select the Update now link.
  • Next select the Start Update button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the Scanner icon at the top of the screen, then select the Settings tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on Recommended actions and then select Quarantine <– Dont forget this
  • Under Reports
  • Select Automatically generate report after every scan
  • Un-Select Only if threats were found
  • Close Ewido Anti-Spyware <– Do not run the scan yet.
Boot your computer into Safemode
  • Go to Start> Shut Off your Computer> Restart
  • As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly.
  • This will bring up a menu.
  • Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to SAFEMODE
  • Then press the Enter on your Keyboard
IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning process:
  • Launch Ewido-Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the Scanner icon at the top and then the Scan tab then click on Complete System Scan.
  • Ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
  • Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select Apply all actions
  • Next select the Reports icon at the top.
  • Select the Save report as button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system
  • make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important
  • Close Ewido

Post the Ewido report and a new HJT log please.
Thanks for the help Ken. Nothing to report from the 2 hour scan. It only identified cookies. I'll deal with it until the next time I re-install windows =) good luck in the future! -JV
JV,

A couple of options for you to try, I need your help with this one. I need you to navigate to this files following the below path , when you find the files, right click on it and let me know if its a Microsoft file. You will have to have windows enabled to show all files and folders. If this is not a microsoft file, it could be bad.

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Help 8\dexplore.exe

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing :
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

If its not a Microsoft file, upload the file here
http://virusscan.jotti.org/

Use the browse feature to find the files, it will give you a report, paste the report into your next reply.

Follow this instructions and it may help you get rid of that problem with ITBarLayout
http://www.fjsmjs.com/IE/notoolbaar.htm

Your current HJT log is about 2 weeks old, post a new log and lets see if anything has changed.

Ken :D
Thanks for the persistance Ken!

C:\program Files\common Files\microsoft Shared\help 8\dexplore.exe
is a microsoft file. Signed by Microsoft Friday, September 23, 2005 8:54:32 AM

from http://www.fjsmjs.com/IE/notoolbaar.htm:
I am able to hit F11. SpyBot is doing a good job from keeping my IExplorer (/webBrowser) being infected, I only get the ITBarLayout in Explorer and ShellBrowser. I can still hit F11 in Windows Explorer, nothing looks amiss when I do.

The ITBarLayout removal tool is a bit older (2002) wonder if it will still work on my 2K3 Server?

Here is todays Logs for HJT: unless I am missing something, I can identify each of these lines.
Thank again for trying so hard! I love a challenge also!

blueshark006,

dexplore.exe  If it wasnt a Microsoft file it could be a virus.

More info on Itbarlayout

http://forums.spybot.info/archive/index.php/t-1380.html

Run the tool and lets see what it does.

Dont forget to disable this, you can re enable it when your done

We need to disable the Tea Timer in Spybot Search and Destroy as to not interfere with the fix.
  • Open Spybot and go to Mode> Advanced Mode> Tools> Resident and take the checkmark out of Tea Timer
that tool only removes the ITBarLayout reg entries for ya. Doesn't do anything else. I had already done it manually (although it comes back again and again). Just got back from a biz trip, sorry so long in replying. JV
blueshark006,

Run the Panda Free online scan, lets see what it comes up with, it won't clean anything but will give you a report, it could uncover something we are not seeing.

Panda ActiveScan <<
Post the Panda Report and a new HJT log please.
