everytime i format, in the past 2 months (approx 8 times) i cant do jack with the mvps.org hosts file…i get a standard microsnot msg about the disk being full or write protected. that is absolutely wrong…i can do the rename and install in safe mode but then i cant do any maintenance or updates unless i am in safe mode and that really sux. for years i have been able to use this feature with no ,i repeat no problems using the same o/s i have now…i even deleted ALL of my malware detection programs, one at a time, and they are not the problem, i have checked zone alarm 6 and it is set properly. i launched a command prompt and killed all appz (like explore) that might have it open, and tried to delete it, and it came back with an attribute of archived, i changed that and still it wont budge. i used the security tab of 'properties, and removed all permissions then added my user name and administrator, making myself the owner, no help. what do i have to do to be able to simply install the current hosts file and get rid of the little 1kb one provided with the o/s. this really is making me psycho, its supposed to me MY computer not some ****** who writes code to terrorize me with his/her cute games. plz tell me what to do - other than honorable hari kari, tkz and aloha
p.s. i have another computer, on the same lan using the same setup and it works fine!!!
no sir i mean everytime i format!!!, i hate wankers, spammers and other malware scammers plus a few years ago i got 5 rootkits in one week, now i FORMAT so i am comfortabe that i am clean and free of wankerware. it may sound odd to you but i dont offer critiques to the way you manage your machine(s), i have 9 malware detector programs and run most of then after every surfing seccion, call me paranoid, call me a twit but you cant call me infected!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I don't wish to call you anything but your chosen screen name and a Member of TomCoyote Forums.
I genuinely thought you were referring to difficulty "defragging" files that resist being defragged. There are lots of examples, though I was puzzled by your reference to Host.files
Therefore I stand corrected and wish you to know that I meant and implied no offense.
I do recognize what you refer to when you describe using "formatting" to insure that you are not infected.
I actually admire that you use that technique.
Please help me out here. Should I take it that remnannts of an old host file re-appear unwanted after your reformat - reinstall?
I hope I'm not being obtuse here.
I think I'm just not recognizing the situation accurately the way you describe it.
Just by the fact of your referring to Hosts File, I imagine that you are familiar with various online resources common to Host files, but I'll post the links anyway and hope there is value for you.
