================
These are symptoms I'm aware of after >> every normal << boot. (In SAFE mode I can use regedit, msconfig and hijackthis normally).

1. can't run regedit
2. can't run msconfig
3. 'hosts' file has been corrupted so that most virus/spyware related sites have an address of 1.1.1.1, so they can't be accessed. (The 'hoster' tool I saw referred to on the site, allows me to get back to the default MS 'hosts' file and access these sites during the current session … but after the next reboot it's been corrupted again).
4. can't use MS 'System Restore'. (I can set it to 'ON' during the current session, but after the next reboot it's been turned 'OFF' again
5. can't run or do anything with hijackthis (if I try to use Explorer to even look at the filename to possibly rename it or even the hijackthis.log file, explorer closes by itself.)

I think I've followed all the instructions in the 'Self Help' for XP forum entry in SAFE mode.

1. SPYBOT has been run and I let it fix all RED entries.

2. AD_AWARE full scan has been run and I let it 'remove' anything it found.

3. AVG AntiSpyware full scan has been run … nothing was found. Here is it's report.

Still trying to figure my problem out, but no luck. The web seems to have quite afew hits of people having a similar problem, but I haven't found a fix yet. I've realized that when I boot in Safe mode, I'm able to a) run the "hoster" tool to let me get back to a default 'hosts' file again B) download a copy of the 'MsnVirRem.exe' tool … which found problems and let me use it's Reboot button to reboot However the normal boot after MsnVirRem ran, all the same symptoms I described in my original post reappear … even through MsnVirRem says it's Search and Destroy button found something and let me use it's ReBoot button. Also when I try to run MsnVirRem in normal mode, it behaves the same way as HiJackThis … if I use Exporer to navigate to it and click on it to execute it, something is intercepting the click and preventing it from actually running.
Hello and Welcome to the forum.

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Open the HijackThis Folder. Find the file HijackThis.exe, Right Click on the file and Select Rename. Rename Hijackthis.exe to Spyware.exe.

Try to reboot in Normal Mode. I need to see the log from Normal Mode if possible.
Post a new HijackThis Log.
Thanks LD. I had seen this suggested before and already had tried this, but have done it again now. I had a copy called d:\hijackthis\my-hi.com that I had created previously in SAFE mode. As I said in my original post, in NORMAL mode if I use Explorer to navigate to d:\hijackthis … it looks like as soon as the virus "sees" 'hijackthis' anywhere in the system, it intercepts and closes the Explorer window. So I tried using Start -> Run -> cmd (to get a command prompt … it looks like maybe another thing this virus may have done, is hide the standard Windows Comand Prompt program that's normally in Accessories). In the command prompt window I then did this to try to run 'my-hi.com': cd d:\hijackthis my-hi.com The HijackThis window opened and if I >>very<< quickly hit the 'Do a System Scan and Save a Log file' button, HijackThis starts to show the processing it's doing, but gets terminated before it can finish and save a log. I think simply renaming the executable, to something that doesn't "look" like 'hijackthis' doesn't help, probably because 'hijackthis' references are still buried inside the file Properties e.g. the virus is probably still "seeing" all the 'HijackThis' details in the Version tab of my 'my-hi.com' file … just like it "sees" me try using Explorer to look at the folder 'd:\hijackthis'. I'd appreciate any other ideas you might have.
The Vundo infection usually does that so let's try running it.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.
Lets see if we can fix the Host. Make Sure Internet Explorer is NOT open when trying this) Launch HijackThis, click the 'Open'Misc Tools'Section -> 'Open hosts file manager'. Delete every line (select each line and click 'Delete line(s)') except the very first top lines beginning with # and: 127.0.0.1 localhost Once finished, click the 'Open in Notepad' button. It should look like this: QUOTE # Copyright © 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp. # # This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows. # # This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each # entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should # be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name. # The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one # space. # # Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual # lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol. # # For example: # # 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server # 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host 127.0.0.1 localhost If it doesn't, or it was already like it, then please tell us
Thanks LD. In my second post, I mentioned that I can use the 'hoster' tool that I noticed mentioned in this forum and elsewhere, to let me a) boot in Normal mode B) run 'hoster' (i.e. get back to the MS default hosts file with 127.0.0.1) and let me navigate to any "security" site I want to. (One of the things I believe the virus does is "hide" the 'hosts' file, even though it wasn't hidden originally). I tried downloading Microsoft's standard "Process Explorer" tool from their "Sysinternals" page to see if I could use it to see anthing unusual, but just as with Microsoft's file "Explorer", if I try to run in it Normal mode, the virus realizes it and closes it immediately (also, even if I simply navigate to the Microsoft site in Normal mode and start to download "Process Explorer" the "Internet Explorer" window gets closed. (I'm able to download the tool in SAFE mode, but can't run it it NORMAL mode … just like HijackThis). The reason I was trying to use "Process Explorer" because while looking at a McAfee page (see below) about the Vundo virus (because you had mentioned the VundoFix.exe tool) it makes a suggestion to "Run Process Explorer and suspend the Explorer.exe, Winlogon.exe, and rundll32.exe processes (right-click on these process names and choose suspend)". I've been trying to figure this virus out for a few months (I haven't bitten the bullet to simply reload Windows yet) but I suspect that Explorer.exe; Winlogon.exe; and rundll32.exe are among the files that have been infected. ======== Removal Instructions Certain variants of the Vundo trojan are especially difficult to remove. Current DAT and Engine functionality does not yet provide an automatic method to fully remove this threat if it is active in memory. However, a combination of manual and DAT/Engine removal methods does allow for successful removal of this threat. Instructions Download Process Explorer (procexp.exe) from Sysinternals Reboot the infected machine Launch the VirusScan On-Demand Scanner (ODS), or the command-line scanner, but don't initiate the scan yet Run Process Explorer and suspend the Explorer.exe, Winlogon.exe, and rundll32.exe processes (right-click on these process names and choose suspend) Scan & clean with the current DAT files and engine (the Window launched in step 3 above) [there will be clean failures, that is expected] Physically power the machine off and back on.(a hard reset is required as Windows will not shutdown without Winlogon.exe running, and resuming that process will revert the changes made by the scanner). These steps will removal all relevant registry entries and identified Vundo components. ============
Run HJT and remove this one:
O4 - Global Startup: MsnVirRem.exe

Click the link below and select Save. Save to Local Disk C:\
http://www.xs4all.nl/~fstaal01/downloads/swreg.exe

Click Start> Run> copy/paste the below in the open run box.

C:\SWreg query "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\DataBasePath" >> C:\query.txt

This will create the file C:\query.txt
Please open C:\query.txt with notepad, and post the contents.

Open notepad and copy and paste the quotebox in it: Fix removed. Save this as fix.bat , choose to save as *all files and place it on your desktop. On the desktop, Doubleclick on fix.bat and allow it to run. Let it merge. Reboot and lets see if the host is now working. Post a new HJT log and let me know how we're doing.
Looks like there's something wrong with the syntax in fix.bat. See what I mean from this output from a command prompt window … last line … "The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect." ============= C:\>dir swreg* Volume in drive C has no label. Volume Serial Number is 98E8-3AEC Bad fix removed. The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect. =============
Well it was worth a shot.

Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.
  • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall
Hey LD … looks like ComboFix has finally got me back in business. After running it and rebooting a couple of times all the symptoms I described in this thread look like they've been corrected.

After a Normal boot
- my 'hosts' file does not have most security websites pointed at 1.0.0.0
- my System Restore function has not been turned off (I'm able to Create a Restore Point again)
- I can run REGEDIT and MSCONFIG normally again (and also Microsoft's 'Process Explorer')
- I can run HijackThis is Normal mode
- etc. etc. (probably a lot of other things the virus prevented me from doing that I hadn't noticed)

Thanks !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (I was just at the point of going through the aggravation of reloading XP.

The 2 logs follow - for ComboFix and HijackThis.

PS: As I had been looking at this myself over the last few months, I had been trying to focus on things associated with the name "fviegmioq" that I noticed in a couple of postings from the web with symptoms similar to mine, but I had forgotten the spelling of this name. I see the ComboFix tool has identified and quarantined these entries among the other things it did.

I suggest you do this:

Launch Notepad (Start>All Programs>Accessories), and copy/paste all the Quoted REGEDIT below to it. Don't forget to include REGEDIT4.
Save in: Desktop
File Name: fixme.reg
Save as Type: All files
Click: Save

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run]
"Smq"=-

On the desktop, doubleclick fix.reg and allow it to run. Let it merge.

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:
