Computer shutting off at times

I'm experiencing some problems with my computer shutting off at different times. It sometimes shuts down when I am working on photos in Paint Shop Pro 9.0. It will often shut off when I'm scanning using Spybot Search and Destroy. I can usually get through a full scan if I disconnect from the internet before I scan but sometimes it will still shut off the computer during the scan. It took me 3 try's to get through the scan this morning.

It also appears that my Norton Anti Virus is not loading before the computer connects to the internet so quite often I will boot disconnected from the internet then connect to the internet once Norton has loaded since I'm not sure this is what is really going on.

TIA for your help.

Hello and Welcome to the forum.

I'll help clean the bad guys, but you need to check and make sure your PC isn't over heating. Are the cooling fans clear of debris? Is the power supply fan turning?

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

1.Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
2.Next, open Add/Remove Programs and remove if listed:
Toolbar <–PeoplePal
Viewpoint
Viewpoint Manager

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

O2 - BHO: PeoplePal Toolbar - {A8FB8EB3-183B-4598-924D-86F0E5E37085} - C:\Program Files\PeoplePC\Toolbar\PPCToolbar.dll

O3 - Toolbar: PeoplePal Toolbar - {A8FB8EB3-183B-4598-924D-86F0E5E37085} - C:\Program Files\PeoplePC\Toolbar\PPCToolbar.dll

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Thank you for your help. Since I posted this hijack log I've tried numerous things to make this stop. I called HP tech support to see if they had any suggestions. This is a laptop so I can see the fans underneath turning but they look as if they need cleaning. I haven't gotten that far with tech support but I did do as they suggested and updated my bios and re-installed power management. However, it's still shutting down when I edit photos in Paint Shop Pro or when I try to scan using Spybot Search and Destroy. I'm going to follow the instructions you posted and see if this helps. I'll come back and post when I finish the steps. Thank you again.
I followed all your instructions and here is the latest log.

Computer is still shutting off as it was before. :(
