Hi, as you can see over here, the user account- and services windows uses five minutes to open, but the rest of the computer is fine
First thing to consider it to UpGrade to XP SP2, and acquire all other critical updates and patches. Next thing to consider is the number of applications and programs you have running from startup in the slow loading user account. You can get a good idea of what is being loaded at StartUp in that user account by going to your System Configuration Utility (MSCONFIG)… And you can turn off (disable) items that you don't want or rarely use. START - RUN (type)MSCONFIG - click on StartUp(tab) START - RUN (type)MSCONFIG - click on Services(tab) Note: Disabling Microsoft Services can cause huge problems, if you don't know what you're doing, so you may want to stick to disabling only unwanted non-Microsoft Services. An exception to this caution may be Microsoft "indexing service" which can slow down a machine and may not be necessary for your use of the machine. Best Regards
Hi, Dough
I think you didn't understand what I ment, the actual window of services found in :Controll Panel/Administrative tools
And the window where you change your user account, and some other windows.

Check out this!
Your are right. I misunderstood your statement.
I may still be not understanding what you're dealing with.
But here's a couple of "general" information articles with specific step-by-step solutions offered for possibly similiar or related kinds of slow-down problems.

Hi again, Dough Sorry for not explaining it good enough, I'll go as detailed as I can. By the way the logon screen is changed back to the normal again you'll see why. If I start any program like IE or if I open my computer, it will respond emediatly, but if I go: start, Controll panel, administrative tools, services or: start, accesories, system tools, back turner (don't know the word in english so I tried to come up with something) those windows will not respond emediatly, they will come up after one minute or so. They do open, but it takes a lot of time, it was also like that with the window wich you open in: Start, controll panel, user accounts.
Hi Unox, That does seem slow, but I don't understand how that is a major problem all by itself. The owner/user (you) shouldn't have to use those functions very often. What symptoms and problems is your machine having, that makes you want to use those functions? If you tell us the problem (what you can't make the computer do) and some information about the computer (brand, model), then maybe we can suggest some solutions. You're doing just fine with your explanations. I admire that your are able to write to us in English and wish I was able to speak/write in your language to make it a little easier for you. Alas, I only speak English. :( "Back turner"…. are you referring to System Restore? Just a thought… Does your machine have any "third-party" software, like Norton/Symantec which also is working on System Restore/go-back functions. Might there be a conflict there? If you don't have Norton/Symantec, then just ignore this last comment. Best Regards Edit: I'm wondering if your machine has suffered any corruption of Operating System files? It does happen in the ordinary course of using the machine from time to time. What Operating System are you running? Windows XP, 98, ME, 2000? Run your System File Checker to make sure all the Windows files are correct. Start - Run - (type)sfc /scannow
HI again You know, it's not that big of a problem, but I thought there must be a reason for the sudden change. I'm not using the services that much, but sometimes I have to because I switched between two different wirless network cards, The Wirless Zero Configuration, rather than that I don't use it much. Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 19:33:32, on 22.08.2006 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.5450.0004) The computer is a Dell Dimension 4600, but upgraded a little bit. The so called "back turner" is System restore, just didn't remember it. By the way I have a Symantec product (Norton Internet Security 2006), but it is no such program as you described I scanned the system, nothing appeared after it, by the way if I just wrote sfc, a dos window would open but disapear shortly so I had to write cmd in "Run" and then do it
Hi Unox,

the command for SFC in XP is: "sfc /scannow" (without the quotation marks)
It shouldn't require and additional typing of the command "Run".
If it does, then you may have a missing or corrupt .dll in your C:\windows\system32 folder.

Run the "sfc /scannow" again. (it is a non-destructive utility that can clean up your operating system periodically)

Next:
Clean up your temporary and temporary internet files.

Here's a complete routine to manually do that:
To clean out all the temporary files and cookies on your system.
Go to
Start - Run - (type) "cleanmgr" without the quotes.
Let it scan your system for files to remove.
Check these three boxes and then press ok to remove:
Temporary Files,
Temporary Internet Files,
Recycle Bin.

Then GoTo:
Start - Find/search - Files or folders - in the named box, type: *.tmp
When the list is generated, choose
Edit - select all - File - delete.

Note: If you cannot delete them all at once because you have too many, then click and hold ctrl and highlight a batch of them at a time. Once highlighted, R-click over the highlight and select delete.

Then use
Start - Run - (type) "%temp%" (without the quotes).
Delete the entire contents of that "temp" folder
(use Edit - Select All - press "Delete", click "Yes").

Then,
Empty your Temporary Internet Cache completely.
Close all instances of Outlook and Internet Explorer,
then use "Control Panel - Internet Options - General tab and click the "Delete File" button.
When prompted place a check in: "Delete all offline content", then click OK.

Then, use Windows Explorer to clean out ALL the other temp folders on your system
(navigate to the folder, (as listed below)
use "Edit - Select All", press "Delete", click "Yes"

* C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temp\
* C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\
* C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temp\

* C:\Windows\Prefetch\

* Empty your "Recycle Bin".

Note: This is a long manual way to clear out .tmp files. It is safe and highly recommended.

Eventually you may wish to use a "tool" to do this procedure for you on a regular basis.
Download: CleanUp! 4.50 from http://www.stevengould.org
Read about all the options for using this device and use it only after you are satisfied that you understand what it will do for you. I use it regularly, and have a squeaky clean computer as a result. I recommend the default setting that are set during installation.

After doing the above routines, do this separate cleaning of your ActiveX, applets and Java routines:
GoTo:
Control Panel - JAVA - (this will open your JAVA Control Panel)
(in some cases the steps might be Control Panel - JAVA plugins)

Once your JAVA Control Panel is open, you will see a Button down toward the bottom of that panel labeled "Delete Files"
Click - Delete Files - OK, Then close your JAVA Control Panel and Reboot.

Note: The current version of JAVA Runtime Environment is Version 8. If you are running an older version, there are specific "vulnerabilities" that have corrected in Version 8. Recommended: Use Add/Remove to "completely" uninstall your Current JAVA Runtime Environment. Then go to C:\Program Files and Delete the entire Folder of JAVA. Then install the newest version of JAVA Runtime Environment. Get it here:
http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

Please note that in doing the above routines, you will "lose" any auto-login settings that Window has saved for you regarding Websites that you visit that require Username and Password to access the site, and any ActiveX scripts necessary to interact with the Website.

This is not a problem, since you will merely be required to "re-enter" your Username and Password the next time you visit any such site. (for instance, Here at TomCoyote) Or you will be asked to download a fresh copy of any required ActiveX. After that, Windows will again remember the settings for you and you will be able to auto-login again.

It's a good idea to clear up these features on a fairly regular basis, for a couple of reasons. First, ActiveX and applet routines occasionally become corrupted and can be infected with some malwares. Second, temporary internet files are often the first entry point of spyware/malware.

Please let us know of your progess and any continuing symptoms or problems.

I'm glad that you've decided to be a Member here at TomCoyote.

Best Regards
AAARGH!!! Just recieved the symptoms again, and I think the problem is the same for MSN. It must be something I always install, since I've had it many times now. Can you please help me locate it? :scratch:
