Hello all,

heard of this forum from the very nice folks at Suggestafix.

It is difficult to start my computer. Press the "on" button, but rather than the usual brief fan noise, beep, then boot up coupled with quiet humming sound, the fan blows like mad, and there's a regular click, every two seconds or so, but nothing else. Sometimes, after a period of between 20 seconds and many minutes, "beep", and it boots up normally. Other times, it will not kick in, no matter how long I leave it.

It also has a problem when it's running. All seems fine, but then it seems to become confused when, for example, I ask it to do a task when it's already busy. Then it freezes, and after a few seconds the screen goes blank apart from a brief "no signal" message, or occasionally "mode not supported". Usually there are no signs of life, and I have to press and hold the "on" switch to switch the machine off completely. After such an episode, it is difficult to start again (see above). Sometimes I get the error message:

STOP 0x000000EA THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER

on other occasions I get nothing.

I wonder if it's a hard drive problem. I've saved a copy of my files. I've defragmented my files. I've reduced the "material accellerator" to zero, because I had the device drivr problem (above). Have ran a virus check, nothing reported.

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give.

Graham

Hello and Welcome to the forum.

This is in reguards to the Error.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?…b;EN-US;q293078

This is what I suggest you do.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Even if you've already run these, make SURE they're up-to-date and run per instructions.

Make sure you have the up-to-date versions of Spybot V 1.4 and Ad-aware SE Build 1.06 . All are free and available below.

Download Spybot, install and update. Then download Ad-aware, install, and update.

Spybot:

Install the program and launch it.

Go to Start > Programs >Spybot > Search & Destroy and choose Spybot S&D

Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D
Click the button to "Search for Updates" and download and install the Updates.
Next click the button "Check for Problems"
When Spybot is complete, it will be showing "RED" (RED) entries "BLACK" entries and "GREEN" (GREEN) entries in the window
Put a check mark beside the RED (RED) entries ONLY.
Choose "Fix Selected Problems" and allow Spybot to fix the RED (RED) entries.

Ad-Aware FULL SCAN:

Install the program and launch it.

1. Launch Ad-Aware SE and run the WebUpdate feature. (Click on the Globe icon > Click connect > Click OK > Click Finish.)
2. Set up the Configurations as follows:
– Click the Gear wheel at the top of the Ad-Aware window
– Click General > Safety & Settings: Check (Green) all three.
– Click Tweak > Cleaning Engine > UNcheck "Always try to unload modules before deletion".
3. Click "Proceed"
4. Click "Scan Now"
5. Deselect "Search for negligible risk entries" as negligible risk entries (MRU's) are not considered to be a threat.
6. Select "Search for low-risk threats"
7. Run the scanner using the Full Scan (Perform full system scan) mode.
8. When the scan has completed, select Next.
9. In the Scanning Results window, select the "Scan Summary" tab.
10. Check the box next to each "target family" you wish to remove.
11. Click next > Click OK.

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Hi LDTate,

huge thank you for taking a look at my problem. I followed your instructions, below is the HJT log.

Under the same title, Dough and Bearbottoms have been helping me with this problem (see "other computer problems" forum) , but my computer is still failing to start up (fan blows, regular clicking from somewhere inside), and when it finally does boot up, it frequently freezes and then crashes. SOMETIMES it seems that there is still something going on in the machine (the red light on the front is flickering, and I hear "normal" sounds coming from it) even though the screen has gone blank (and reads "no signal"); by pressing Cntl-Alt-Del repeatedly I can get it to close down "normal" (even though I can't see anything on the screen). But usually everything dies.

I hope you can shed some light on this.

many thanks,

Graham

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Hi LDTate,

I couldn't respond to your message until now, the machine would not restart (usual problem, fan blowing and regular click).

I followed your instructions, results as follows:

SPYWAREBOT wan not in thelist, so I couldn't remove it.

Ran HJT system scan. Put check in box of three of the 4 items that you listed and had them fixed. However, the other one, the SpywareBot.exe - boot did not show in the list!

Upon rechecking the list after re-running HJT, another of the 4 was still present, i.e. 04 -HKCU… which ends msmsgs.exe" / background.

found ALCMTR.EXE , two of them, had a blue crab as a symbol (Realtek Azalia Audio - event monitor). I deleted both, one was not in capital letters, I HOPE I haven't made a mistake with that one!

Ran ATF CLEANER.

THEN TRIED TO REBOOT, WITHOUT SUCCESS. Now the usual starting problem.

new HJT log below.

Many thanks for your help,

Graham

You can use windows sfc (system file checker) You'd need your XP CD to make this work.
Click Start> Run> type sfc /scannow Note the space.
(Note that there is a space between sfc and /scannow)
Hi LDTate, just to let you know that my starting problems seem to be over. I gave the internals a clean out with compressed air, and now it starts without hesitation. Fantastic. Thanks to you folk on the forum. I would still really appreciate it if you could analyse the HJT log that i sent a few days ago, after making some alterations following your comments. MANY THANKS, Graham
