Intermittent Major Slowing & AdAware Gets Jammed Up

Hi,

I've been having a problem for a while now, but due to a recent cross-country move, I haven't been able to address my computer issues too promptly.

There appears to be some sort of malware on my computer. It will randomly slow WAY down, to the point where I can't really use it. Then I try to do the spy/malware protocol listed here, and it improves, but only for a while.

There also seems to be some sort of problem with the sound. Now the log-on jingle and other sounds are garbled.

These problems seem to appear after internet usage, but there's no rhyme or reason to the sites that I've visited that may be causing it.

Also, when I try to run AdAware, it gets jammed up on this file:

C://Windows\System32\MsDtc\Trace

My most recent ewido scan has come up clean, so I have no idea what is causing the problem. I'm at the end of my rope, so any help you can offer would be HUGELY appreciated! Thanks! ~Ang

Welcome, sorry for the delay.

There appears to be some sort of malware on my computer.

Are you experiencing any pop ups or things of that nature to make you think your infected with something.


msdtc.exe is the Microsoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator. The process is loaded into the system by Microsoft Personal Web Server and Microsoft SQL Server. The service is used to manage transactions across multiple servers.



I am not looking at anything bad on your log, Ewido came up clean so I dont think your problems are malware related.


We can fix a couple of things.

Your HIJACKTHIS program is current, but it is very important that it resides in its own folder.
We will use Hijackthis (HJT) to make changes to your system and HJT will make backups of those changes,
If HJT is not in its own folder, those backups could be lost.

Easy to fix,
* just go to My Computer > YOUR C:\ DRIVE > Program Files and create a new folder and name it Hijackthis .
* Now scroll to where you have HJT currently, right click on the HJT icon and select CUT .
* Now open the new folder you just created and right click within that folder and select PASTE .
* Now HJT should reside in C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\Hijackthis.exe




Open HJT Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows, check this entry and click on Fix Checked

  • Your Java is out of date and leaving your system vulnerable.
  • Go to your Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall any previous (jre) installations.
  • Reboot your system.
  • Then go to the Sun Java website and download and install the update.
  • Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 8 <–This is what you need to download and install.
  • Then after install you can verify your installation here Sun Java Verify



Run this cleaner to clean out all your temp files and such, a big build up of this junk can cause you some problems.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
  • This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main - choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.





  • Click Start>Run
  • Type in sfc /scannow, hit Enter.
  • Note: there is a space between sfc and /scannow
  • This should replace any corrupted/missing system files and will hopefully fix things.
    You may need your XP disc in your CD drive for this.

Let me know if any of this helps, if not it may be a windows issue and I can direct you to some windows tech support sites that deal with this sort of thing.

Thanks so much for your response & suggestions!

Here's why I was thinking malware…
  • It all started after I installed AOL Instant Messenger (bad idea, so I subsequently uninstalled it, but the problems remained)
  • Adaware crashes every time it gets to C://WINDOWS\system32\MsDtc\Trace, so I can't really use it anymore
  • It's had the intermittent slowing since the AIM debacle

Also, when I try to send outgoing e-mail, Norton Internet Security says that the e-mail can't be sent because the server timed out. Then I have to turn off outgoing e-mail scanning to send any e-mail.


So, I did all of the things you suggested, but I still have the same problems.

Also, I don't know if this is noteworthy or not…at some point several months ago I installed NTI Backup Now! 4, but it didn't work on my system. Don't know why, and at that point, didn't much care, so I uninstalled it, but I can't seem to get it off my system.

Why do I get the feeling that I am going to need to go back to the factory settings??? :rofl:

A few issues back, PCWorld Magazine had an article about the 100 best programs and the 10 worst, yep, you guessed it, AOL came in #1 as the worst software. I would not have any of there software on any of my systems.


I don't see any instance of AOL on your system. You can go into the Add-Remove programs in the Control Panel and remove C:\Program Files\NewTech Infosystems\NTI Backup NOW! Its still in your start up folder , this may be causing you problems .


Then open HJT Scan Only and remove this entry.

Open HJT > Misc Tools> Open Uninstall Manager > Save List and paste the list into your next reply and also let me see a new HJT log, your current log is over 10 days old and things may have changed.

I've tried many times to remove NTI Backup Now using the Add/Remove Programs, but to no avail.

NTI Backup is showing on your Add-Remove Programs, lets try removing it in Safemode so that none of its files will be in use.

  • Go to Start> Shut Off your Computer> Restart
  • As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly,
    this will bring up a menu.
  • Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to SAFEMODE
  • Then press the Enter on your Keyboard


If its still a no go, go to C:\Program File\NTI Backup NOW! 4 and delete the folder.

Reboot and let me know if its gone, at that point I would like you to run a couple of scans and if they come up clean, it may be a windows issue and I can direct you to some excellent windows support sites that are better at dealing with that sort of issue.

Hi, there, Ken,

Well, I FINALLY think I got rid of Backup Now! The computer does seem to be performing slightly better, but the other problems still exist. I have to turn off the outgoing mail scan on Norton Internet Security because it takes too long and times out, and Adaware still crashes at Windows\systems32\MsDTC\Trace. And my keyboard is kind of wonky - like the cursor jumps up a couple of lines randomly.

Glad things are working a little better for you, although the problems you are still having are not fun. There is an option that Norton has that you can uncheck for the time being.

Open up Norton and go to Options > Email and take the checkmark out of Scan Outgoing Email, your version may be different than mine so you may have to look for that option.


Something to point out to you, I did this myself about 3 months ago, as you use your computer and add programs, sometimes the build up makes strange things happen, myself, Ewido would not work in Normal Mode, Ad-Aware also hung up, sometimes my system took forever to shut down and a few other things. I went through all the programs that I had installed and uninstalled about 10 programs that I havent used in awhile and most likely was not going to use again…. Guess what, everything started working better…go figure.



Lets run Blacklight , it may show us if there are bad files that are not showing up on your log.

Download and Save Blacklight to your desktop:
  • Double-click blbeta.exe
  • Then accept the agreement
  • leave [X]scan through Windows Explorer checked.
  • Click > scan then > next
  • You'll see a list of all items found. There will also be a log on your desktop with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (the xxxxxxx stand for numbers).
  • Copy and paste this log in your next reply.
  • Don't choose the rename option yet! I want to see the log first, because legitimate items can also be present there, such as "wbemtest.exe"

Both Ewido and Blacklight came up clean :thumbup: as does your HJT log so this may be windows issue, I am going to direct you to some links to read and some windows support sites that may be able to help you with this issue, since this forum is for the removal of malware, I won't be able to help you any longer.
