I posted this on Friday, but have had no replies, so I'm trying again, with some additional information. I run a small nonprofit, and this is the company's only computer. Because of how slow it now responds, work has become impossible to do in a timely fashion. HELP!!

In the last couple of days, my computer has slowed to an absolute crawl. I was out of town last weekend and used a hotel wireless connection. I was running at normal/slightly sluggish speed on Monday , but on Wednesday I noticed a marked decline in speed. I have run each of my virus/spyware programs: first AdAware, then Spybot, Norton. and finally a program that I downloaded at the Microsoft website. After running the Microsoft program, I had a report that the worm Bagel had been found and removed/repaired. Still, Internet pages continue to load horribly slowly, they seem to be loaded, and then the cursor goes back into hourglass mode and I have to wait again – this will happen 2 or 3 times for each page that is loading, even when I hit the "back" button to view a page I've already opened. All other programs also run exceedingly slowly, even when I have only one program open. I have run hijack this and generated the below logfile. Thanks! (I have turned off my computer and turned it back on a number of times. )

Hi Maryanna_C,

Not a lot removed there. Any improvement?

I see that Viewpoint is installed. Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player are Viewpoint components which are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Viewpoint Manager is responsible for managing and updating Viewpoint Media Player’s components. You can disable this using the Viewpoint Manager Control Panel found in the Windows Control Panel menu. By selecting Disable auto-updating for the Viewpoint Manager – the player will no longer attempt to check for updates. Anything that is installed without your consent is suspect. Read what Viewpoint says and make your own decision.

To provide a satisfying consumer experience and to operate effectively, the Viewpoint Media Player periodically sends information to servers at Viewpoint. Each installation of the Viewpoint Media Player is identifiable to Viewpoint via a Customer Unique Identifier (CUID), an alphanumeric identifier embedded in the Viewpoint Media Player. The Viewpoint Media Player randomly generates the CUID during installation and uses it to indicate a unique installation of the product. A CUID is never connected to a user's name, email address, or other personal contact information. CUIDs are used for the sole purpose of filtering redundant information. Each of these information exchanges occurs anonymously.

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is often installed without user's approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This may change, read Viewpoint to Plunge Into Adware
It is STRONGLY recommended that you remove the Viewpoint products; however, decide for yourself. To uninstall the Viewpoint components (Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player):

  • Click Start, then Settings, then click Control Panel.
  • In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  • In Add or Remove Programs, Remove the Viewpoint component
  • Do the same for each Viewpoint component.

And

Please download DDS and save it to your desktop.
  • Disable any script blocking protection
  • Double click dds.scr to run the tool.
  • When done, DDS.txt will open.
  • Click Yes at the next prompt for Optional Scan.
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
—————————————————

Please include the contents of the following in your next reply:

DDS.txt

Please attach the second file; Attach.txt. To attach a file, do the following:
  • Under the reply panel is the Attachments Panel
  • Browse for the attachment file you want to upload, then click the green Upload button
  • Once it has uploaded, click the Manage Current Attachments drop down box
  • Click on [external image: Posted Image] to insert the attachment into your post

Please post both DDS logs in your next reply. No need for a HJT log this time.

Thanks
Oldman960 – Thanks for the reply. Don't know if it is my imagination or not, but everything seems even slower this morning – and I didn't think that was possible. For example, it took nearly 6 minutes from the time I clicked the START button, until the Add/Remove Programs list had been "populated," and 15 minutes to uninstall Viewpoint and the Viewpoint toolbar.

I downloaded and ran DDS. Both you and the program instructed me to "disable any script blocking protection." I don't know that I have any script blocking protection – at least I'm not aware of any. I'm including the DDS.txt, below, but is there something I should have looked for in the way of script blocking protection before I ran DSS?

Here is the DDS.txt:

============= FINISH: 9:45:40.17 ===============

I've attached the other file, however, I don't know how to zip it, as the DDS program instructed. My husband pointed me to a free download of a zip program, but I didn't think it was a good idea to download anything besides what you were asking me to download right now. Let me know if this is not the correct format for the attachment, and if it is not, how to correct it.

Thanks!

Hi Maryanna_C,

You're doing fine. If you would have had any script blockers you would have known as you probably would have had a warning sometime in the past.

I will close your other thread after you reply to this one. Don't be alarmed if you get a notication that your thread has been closed. It will just be for the ither one.

You will need to disable Spybot's Tea Timer function, if it is running, as it may interfere. - this is a two step process.
First step:
  • Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • If you have the new version 1.5, Click once on Resident Protection, then Right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
  • If you have Version 1.4, Click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident
Second step, For Either Version :
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode
  • Go To the bottom of the Vertical Panel on the Left, Click Tools
  • then, also in left panel, click Resident shows a red/white shield.
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • In the Resident protection status frame, Uncheck the box labelled Resident "Tea-Timer"(Protection of over-all system settings) active
  • OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
  • Reboot your machine fully for the changes to take effect.

Download ERUNT from Here and save it to your desktop.

  • Double click erunt-setup.exe to install the program
  • Follow the prompts, and then uncheck Create NTREGOPT desktop icon at the Additional Tasks screen.
  • Click No when you are prompted about creating an ERUNT entry in the startup folder.
  • At the next screen, uncheck Show documentation and check Launch ERUNT
  • If ERUNT doesn't start by itself, launch it from the desktop shortcut.
  • At the configuration screen, make sure all 3 checkboxes are checked
  • Click Ok to run the backup process
  • When prompted, click YES to create a new folder.
  • Progress bars will show backup status.
  • A confirmation window will popup when complete. Click OK to close

It is vitally important that combofix is renamed before it is even started to download

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

  • If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:
    -Tools->Options->Main tab
-Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".
  • During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

[external image: Posted Image]

[external image: Posted Image]

  • It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.
  • Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix

———————————————————–

  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

    ———————————————————–

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Hi Maryanna_C,

While I'm going over the log, can you answer a question. Do you have 2 versions of Norton (symantec) installed. The log shows

AV: *On-access scanning disabled* (Updated)
AV: Norton 360 *On-access scanning disabled* (Updated)
FW: *disabled*
FW: Norton 360 *disabled*

Thanks
Not that I'm aware. How could I determine that? I went to the add/remove programs tab and found Norton 360 listed only once. I went to the PROGRAMS folder and there was only one Norton 360 folder and no duplicate folders or files in that folder.
Hi Maryanna_C Go to Start Button > Control Panel > Security Center. What does it say in the Antivirus and FireWall sections? I'll check the uninstall list again, but when you where in add/remove, did you see any other Symantec Antivirus program listed? Thanks
In add/remove there are Norton 360, LiveUpdate and LiveUpdate Notice, all by Symantec.

In the Security Center, under Firewall, it indicates it is ON, and it says,

At least one of the firewalls installed on this computer is currently ON. A firewall helps protect your computer against viruses and other security threats.

Note: Two or more firewalls running at the same time can conflict with each other. For more information see Why you should use only one firewall.

Under Virus Protection, it likewise indicates it is ON, and says,

Norton 360 reports that it is up to date and virus scanning is on. Antivirus software helps protect your computer against viruses and other security threats.

Thanks.
Hi Maryanna_C,

Not sure why combofix is reporting it like that. Has there been an improvement in your system?

We need some file informantion
  • Make sure to use Internet Explorer for this
  • Please go to VirSCAN.org FREE on-line scan service
  • Copy and paste the following file path, into the "Suspicious files to scan" box on the top of the page:

    c:\windows\system32\848F71F2A5.sys
  • Click on the Upload button
  • If a pop-up appears saying the file has been scanned already, please select the ReScan button.
  • Once the Scan is completed, click on the "Copy to Clipboard" button. This will copy the link of the report into the Clipboard.
  • Paste the contents of the Clipboard in your next reply.

Please download the OTMoveIt3 by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to run it.
  • Copy the lines in the codebox below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

Do Not copy the word CODE note the fix starts with the :
    :Processes
    explorer.exe

    :Services

    :Reg

    :Files
    c:\program files\Viewpoint
    c:\docume~1\Maryanna\LOCALS~1\Temp\IadHide5.dll

    :Commands
    [Purity]
    [emptytemp]
    [start explorer]
    [Reboot]
  • Return to OTMoveIt3, right click in the "Paste Instructions for Items to be Moved" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt3
Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes. In this case, after the reboot, open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

And we'll have a look with another tool.

Download avz4.zip from here
  • Unzip it to your desktop to a folder named avz4
  • Double click on AVZ.exe to run it.
  • Run an update by clicking the Auto Update button on the Right of the Log window: [external image: Posted Image]
  • Click Start to begin the update
Note: If you recieve an error message, chose a different source, then click Start again
  • After the update, from the "File" menu, choose "Standard Scripts"
  • Put a check next to item 2: Advanced System Investigation
  • Click Execute selected scripts
  • At the next prompt, click the OK button
  • Let the scan run and click "OK" when the completion prompt pops up
  • Now Close out of the Standard Scripts window, and exit AVZ
  • Navigate to the avz4 folder and locate the folder LOG
  • Inside the LOG folder you will find virusinfo_syscheck.htm and virusinfo_syscheck.zip
  • Attach virusinfo_syscheck.zip to your next reply, along with a fresh HijackThis log

Please post back with
  • Virus Scam results
  • OTMoveIt2 log
  • virusinfo_syscheck.zip
  • new HJT log taken after all other steps

Thanks
No, there's been no improvement to the speed of the system. :(
