Need help cleaning a system. Ran HJT, marked all that seemed appropriate and when running, HJT generated the following error. [removed] bounces but I thought the error might be helpful so I've included it before the HJT log that follows.

The log you posted is almost two weeks old. Please rescan with hijackthis and post the new log. Thanks
HJT will run and scan but fails when 'save log' button clicked. HJT is in its own directory but the window just closes and no log file is created. Since the listed scan and until this morning, the machine was off or booted in safe mode for backing up some files only. Due to the hailstorm of popups, etc. when I tried to run HJT just now I'd say the basic problem is unchanged though some additional changes may have occured. What now? Thanks. – ARE –
Please download Qoofix by RubbeR DuckY from http://www.malwarebytes.org/Qoofix.zip
  • Unzip all files to a convenient location such as C:\Qoofix.
  • Go to the folder you unzipped all files and run Qoofix.exe.
  • Click Begin Removal and wait for the scan to finish.
  • If an infection has been found, select yes to restart your computer.
Finally post the Qoofix logfile.

Also please try and save the logfile in hijackthis and if it works, post it!
Ok, back to plan A. A geek came by yesterday and was able to clean some things but some remain. I was able to get a new HJT Log which follows. Lets take it from here. Thanks again very much.

Awesome, that malware was killed! You are using an outdated version of Hijackthis, please delete your current copy and do the following:

* Click here to download HJTsetup.exe
  • Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
  • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
  • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
  • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
  • At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
