I have run Spybot, HJT and adaware, all with latest updates. I still get an error msg when turning system on, can't find rundll to start application. I also get shut down error msgs regarding nail.exe and shellconhidden. While the msgs show errors on not beig able to find these files I would still like to ensure a clean machine. Hope someone can help.

Here is my HJT log file:

Sorry for the delay. Here is my latest HJT List. I am still getting the Shellcon error along with a start up error saying it can not find cfmgr52.dll. Also when I shut down I get a message about Tsl, can't see to get rid of this either.

Thanks for your help.
Hello kazawic and welcome to TomCoyote. :wavey:

Sorry about the delay. Since it had been four weeks since my previous reply, I stopped tracking it.

Step 1
Open HijackThis, run a scan, then check the following:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

Step 2
Please set your computer to show all files.
  • Double-click My Computer.
  • Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
  • Click the View tab.
  • Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
  • Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
  • Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
You will need to reverse this process when all steps are done.

Step 3
Please delete the following files/folders:

C:\WINDOWS\cfgmgr52.dll << File Only
C:\WINDOWS\System32\tempx.exe << File Only
C:\WINDOWS\System32\PSof1.exe << File Only
C:\WINDOWS\System32\fjhgykl.exe << File Only
C:\WINDOWS\system32\qcafproc.exe << File Only
C:\WINDOWS\System32\jx7tz4l.exe << File Only
C:\WINDOWS\System32\jx7tz4l.exe << File Only

C:\Program Files\Cas << Whole Folder

If you have any problem deleting these items, reboot into Safe Mode (tap F8 during bootup, use arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then hit 'enter') and try again.

Step 4
Please delete your temporary files by deleting all files and folders that are in those folders (do not delete the temp folder itself) like for example
C:\WINDOWS\Temp\
C:\Temp\
C:\Documents and Settings\Every username\Local Settings\Temp\
Also delete your Temporary Internet Files (Start > Control Panel > Internet Options > Delete Files), be sure to also select delete all offline content.
Empty the Recycle Bin.

Step 5
Reboot normally and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread.
Please let us know of any complications you had and how the computer is behaving.
After I hit OK in step 2 where do I go to delete those files mentioned? I did a file search and opened up C drive, neither produced those files. Am I missing something?

Step 3
Please delete the following files/folders:

C:\WINDOWS\cfgmgr52.dll << File Only
C:\WINDOWS\System32\tempx.exe << File Only
C:\WINDOWS\System32\PSof1.exe << File Only
C:\WINDOWS\System32\fjhgykl.exe << File Only
C:\WINDOWS\system32\qcafproc.exe << File Only
C:\WINDOWS\System32\jx7tz4l.exe << File Only

C:\Program Files\Cas << Whole Folder

If you have any problem deleting these items, reboot into Safe Mode (tap F8 during bootup, use arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then hit 'enter') and try again.

I will assume this is the instruction you were referring to? I'll use this file as an example on how to find the items to delete. Make sure hidden and system files are shown as instructed in Step 2 before looking for the items to delete.

C:\WINDOWS\System32\PSof1.exe

To find PSof1.exe, 'Start' then 'My Computer' and on (C:). Scroll down to the Windows folder and to open it. Now scroll to the System32 folder and to open it. Inside the System 32, scroll down until you find PSof1.exe. Right click the file and choose 'Delete'. Repeat this process for each of the remaining files.

If you still can not find them, they may have already been removed by another program. Just continue on with the rest of the instructions.
Did everything. Two things. First,I still get the Shellcon error message when shutting down. Second, you said to delete the CAS folder. There is another folder named cassub. Should I delete this as well?

Here is the latest log file. Thanksfor your help.

Still get Shellconhiddenwindow and dll error when shutting down. They pop up quick. The system shuts down without haing to do anything, so I guess they are here to stay.

The new log appears clean. I only clean up the malware from the computers and am no good at PC troubleshooting. I recommend posting about this problem in the Other Computer Problems Forum for help in fixing those error messages.
I will leave you with my all clean speech below.

Do not follow these instructions or install these programs until the problem has been resolved as they may complicate the troublshooting procedure.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the System Restore tab, put a check mark in the 'Turn Off System Restore' check box.
3. Click OK, and then click Yes.
4. Restart the computer.
5. Repeat steps 1 - 2, this time clearing the box beside 'Turn Off System Restore', click 'OK'.

I suggest that you get these programs to help keep the computer clean:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer. Spyware Blaster runs silently in the background.
ie-spyad - Puts over 12,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites for Internet Explorer.
Google Toolbar - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
Firefox - 'Safer' alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.

AVG AntiVirus - Free antivirus program if you currently are not using one.
ZoneAlarm - Free firewall program if you currently are not using one.

Here are two very good and free malware scanners:

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4
AdAware SE v1.06
Set-up Instructions for Spybot S&D and Adaware SE

If you have them already, check to make sure that they are the newest version.

Update these regularly.

You may also want to read "So how did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-virus updated.
