hello guys , hope you can help , i recently bought a new dvd drive as my old one seemed to have packed in , it was only 3 months old  and now my new one dosent seem to be reading any of my disks :( i have tryed tons of games and dvds in it and they just wont work , it did play a normal cd but thats about it , a few days ago it was playing everything , any tips from you smart guys would be appreciated :)
Did you install the software included with the drive that you purchased? Any DVD or DVD RW will operate as a CD ROM if you just physically install it and hook up the IDE and power. But for it to recognize its ability to read DVDs, you have to install the accompanying software. Depending on the brand of unit you bought this name may be different, but usually the software is Named: Power DVD. After you install from that manufacturer provided disk, you should be ready to go. Best Regards
But the the shop i bought it from assured me that i wouldnt need any software for it , and like i said it was playing everything a few days ago then just stopped working , i put my xp disk in 20 mins ago and that was running fine then i ejected it and reinserted it and it wouldnt work again?
May be a loose connector. Turn off the machine and unplug the power supply cord. Do you understand about Static Electricity precautions? Check that the IDE is correctly and firmly pluged in. Check that the power connector is correctly and firmly plugged in. Is there also an audio wire? Check that it is properly plugged . How is the DVD unit identified in your Device Manager listing?
done everything you aked me to do Manufactuer: standard cd-rom drives Model: ide dvd-rom 16x serial number: Device name \\cdrom0 Drive letter H: Device address Port: Bus: Target: LUN is that what you wanted?
How many Physical Hard Drive units do you have? How many ATAPI (otical disk cd rom or dvd) do you have. Any yellow or red warnings in your Device Manager under your other Drives? Even though Device Manager says the unit is working properly, you know that it is not. Consider "Remove" its driver in Device Manager. Then Reboot and allow Windows to "find new Hardware" and "install drivers for new Hardware".
i have 1 hard drive and 1 dvd rom i removed the dvd/rom drive and rebooted it found the new hardware but still dosent play :( im sorry to be a pest .
Hi BullyBoy, You have no reason whatsoever to feel bad about asking questions. That is why this Forum exists! I'm glad that you've decided to become a Member here at TomCoyote. I just wish I had the "magic solution" readily available for you. I'll do a little more research, because I would like to help. In the meantime, perhaps a more knowledgeable Member will come along and reply with the "silver bullet" for you. :) It "might" be useful to look into your BIOS settings to see how your machine is recognizing this unit. Are you comfortable doing so? Please let us know what the current settings are, without making any changes. You mentioned that your previous DVD unit was only 3 months old "before it packed it in". And now, a brand new DVD unit is having intermittent failure. Question: Was the previous DVD unit an added component that didn't exist when the machine was new? What other added components might you have added? I am thinking about power supply demands and wonder if the original power supply may be unable to handle the additional components. (Just thinking,… not concluding) Best Regards

IDE channel 0master ide-rom 16x

If this setting is from BIOS, then your machine IS recognizing the DVD unit
But it may not be recognizing it as a DVD unit with DVD functionality.

Glad to have you as a Member.
Sorry my suggestions haven't been of any help.

Best Regards
