Hello someone out their has got to help me out with this it has been driving me nuts over the past couple of weeks. My cd/dvd rom drive has given up the ghost completely it started out where it would always read the cd/dvd correctly now it doesen't even open when i press the button on the front. The drive is not recognised anywhere where i have looked anyway from what i can see there is nothing on my computer to say that the drive exists. Any help would be welcomed and appreciated. Thanks Neil.
A couple of things could be happening. The most obvious in my mind is that if the drive is old, it has probably just died. You can buy another good one for a reasonable price on the internet or at your local circut city or best buy. Second is that something may have become unplugged in the computer. If you want you can carefully open the computer and double check that all the connections are tightly plugged and nothing has fallen out.
My laptop is a toshiba and is around 2 years old with a built in cd/dvd drive it is actually still under an extended warranty. I don't feel comfortable in dismantling the unit as this may void the warranty. When i spoke to the helpline they suggested using the system restore cd to put it back to the factory settings which i thought was a bit drastic at such an early stage as i would lose everything i have built on my computer in the last 2 years. Their must be an alternative. Any other suggestions?
If you're not willing to open up the computer or willing to restore the default settings, and the drive still isn't recognized ont he computer, then the only logical option I can see is taking the computer back to the store where you bought it from and then explaining your situation. They should give you a free replacement CD drive.
