Hi,

You're still infected. Print or copy the instructions because you'll be in Safe Mode again. Please make sure that the settings for Ewido are correct as posted below (important!).

• Download VirtumundoBegone and save it to your Desktop.
- When you have done this, double-click on VirtumundoBeGone.exe and follow the instructions. Do not worry if you see a BLUE SCREEN "Fatal Error" Message, it is normal and expected.
- When it has finished, reboot your computer.
- A log that is created on your desktop called VBG.TXT which you will post in your next reply.

• Open Ewido -> click Update -> click Start Update. Close program after it has updated.

• Reboot into Safe Mode.

• Clean out your Temporary Internet files. Proceed like this:
  • Close ALL browsers / open windows / open programs.
  • Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Internet Options.
  • On the General tab, click Delete Files under Temporary Internet Files.
  • In the Delete Files dialog box, tick the Delete all offline content check box , and then click OK.
  • On the General tab, click Delete Cookies under Temporary Internet Files, and then click OK.
  • Click on the Programs tab then click the Reset Web Settings button. Click Apply then OK.
  • Click OK.
Next Click Start, click Control Panel and then double-click Display. Click on the Desktop tab, then click the Customize Desktop button. Click on the Web tab. Under Web Pages you should see a checked entry called Security info or something similar. If it is there, select that entry and click the Delete button. Click Ok then Apply and Ok.

Empty the Recycle Bin by right-clicking the Recycle Bin icon on your Desktop, and then clicking Empty Recycle Bin

Scan with Ewido as follows:
1. Launch Ewido, click on the "Scanner" button and choose the "Settings" tab.
  • Under "How to act?", click on "Recommended actions" and choose "Quarantine" to set default action for detected malware.
  • Under "How to Scan?" check all (default).
  • Under "Possibly unwanted software" check all (default).
  • Under "What to Scan?" make sure "Scan every file" is selected (default).
  • Under "Reports" select "Automatically generate report after every scan and UNcheck "Only if threats were found".
2. Click the "Scan" tab to return to scanning options.
3. Click "Complete System Scan" to start.
4. When the scan has finished you will be presented with a list of infected objects found. Click "Apply all actions" to place the files in Quarantine.

IMPORTANT! Do not save the report before you have clicked the Apply all actions button. If you do, the log that is created will indicate "No action taken", making it more difficult to interpret the report. So be sure you save it only AFTER clicking the "Apply all actions" button?

5. Click on "Save Report" to view all completed scans. Click on the most recent scan you just performed and select "Save report as" - the default file name will be in date/time format as follows: Report-Scan-20060620-142816.txt. Save to your desktop. A copy of each report will also be saved in C:\Program Files\ewido anti-spyware 4.0\Reports\
6. Exit Ewido when done and submit the log report in your next response.

Note: Close all open windows, programs, and DO NOT USE the computer while Ewido is scanning. If Explorer or other programs are open during the scan that means certain files will also be in use. Some malware will insert itself and hide in areas that are "protected" by Windows when the files are being used. This can hamper Ewido's ability to clean properly and may result in reinfection.

• Reboot into Normal Mode.

• Post back with the VBG.TXT, the results of the Ewido scan, and a new HijackThis log.

Please tell me everything is gone lol
Hi,

Things are looking much better now. By the way, Ylite is a chat program that allows you to chat without ads. There's just one more thing to do just to make sure everything is okay.

• Please perform an onlinescan with Panda Online. Please use this scanner instead of any other scanner! You have to use Internet Explorer for this scan.
- Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
- A new window will open…click the Check Now button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your e-mail address and click send
- Select either Home User or Company
- Click the big Scan Now button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component, allow it
- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
- When the download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
- When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the "See Report" button, then "Save Report" and save it to a convenient location.

• Post back with the results of the Panda scan and a new HijackThis log. Also, let me know how your computer is running now.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\oins.exe

• Start HijackThis, click System Scan Only and place a checkmark next to the following item:
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName =

Close ALL browsers and open windows/programs except HijackThis and click 'Fix Checked'.

• Reboot into Normal Mode.

Your log looks clean now. If that R0 comes back, don't worry about it. It's more of an optional fix than a problem. Also, it looks like you re-enabled Symantec's Script Blocking.

• Please set your system to hide system files.

- Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
- Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, uncheck Show hidden files and folders.

- Name the restore point - something like "After infection cleaned" or "After cleaning"

• Delete the old Restore Points:
- Go to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Disk Cleanup. Click Ok.

- Where it states "System Restore" - click Clean up.
- All of the old Restore Points will be deleted EXCEPT for the one you just created.

Reboot your computer!

• It appears that you have BackWeb installed on your computer. This was installed, in your case, by Hewlett-Packard. You may want to consider uninstalling it. However, before you uninstall it, please read the link below about BackWeb as a pre-installed program on HP's.

• To keep this clean in the future, I would suggest the following things:

• Install Spywareblaster. SpywareBlaster doesn't scan and clean for so-called spyware but prevents it from being installed in the first place. It blocks the popular spyware ActiveX controls and also prevents the installation of any of them via a webpage. Update it periodically.

* Avoid illegal sites because that's where most malware is present.
* Don't click on links inside pop-ups. If you should get them, use ALT + F4 to close them.
* Don't click on links in spam messages claiming to offer anti-spyware software because most of these so-called removers ARE spyware.
* Download free software only from sites you know and trust because a lot of free software can bundle other software, including spyware.

• Let your anti-spyware scanner(s) scan frequently and don't forget to update before scanning.

• Make sure that your virus-scanner, the one that is already installed on your system, is always up to date!

• Make sure your Windows has the latest updates by going here.

• More information on how to prevent malware can be found at So how did I get infected in the first place? (by Tony Klein).
