Hi, I am a new member here. I wanted to post my HiJack Log as my computer is running very slowly and I have tried many things to fix it. I have run several anti-virus programs, Have uninstalled a lot of programs but still it is slow. I still have a lot of memory left in the computer, I regularly defrag and run other maintenance programs. Perhaps the computer is just getting old but I would be grateful for any advice. Thanks

Welcome to the forum :wavey:

No malware is visible.

Before I suggest anything, I have one question:

I see this running:

O23 - Service: WAN Miniport (ATW) Service (WANMiniportService) - America Online, Inc. - C:\WINDOWS\wanmpsvc.exe

But no other AOL entries.

Do you have/use AOL?
Thanks for the quick reply. No I dont use AOL but it was on the computer when I got it although I thought that I had managed to uninstall all the files. Stalks
This is an unnecessary program running:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Works Update Detection] C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Works Shared\WkUFind.exe

Remove it this way:

(1) Open PictureIt!.
(2) Open a picture.
(3) Choose the Tools \ Options menu option.
(4) Clear the "Check for updates online" option.
(5) Close PictureIt!.

Other "unnecessary" running items to "fix" with HijackThis!:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Works Portfolio] C:\Program Files\Microsoft Works\WksSb.exe /AllUsers

The wkssb.exe process allows you to gather and sort pictures, clipart and various other information. If you use the Portfolio feature of MsWorks you should leave this process running.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [nwiz] nwiz.exe /install

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UserFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -u

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SetIcon] C:\Program Files\Generic\Seticon.exe

Seticon.exe: Installed by a 6-in-1 (4 Media Card slots, a floppy drive and a USB connecion) device. Constantly updates the icons for the four Media Card slots that it has and is a resource hog. Remove at your own discretion.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot

O23 - Service: WAN Miniport (ATW) Service (WANMiniportService) - America Online, Inc. - C:\WINDOWS\wanmpsvc.exe

Copy the text in the following quote box into Notepad:

sc stop WANMiniportService
sc delete WANMiniportService

Save it to your desktop as killaol.bat.

Now, the killaol.bat file on the desktop. A DOS window will open/close.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
Under Firefox choose: Firefox cache and Firefox cookies
Click the Empty Selected button.

Note: A temporary side effect of running ATF Cleaner is that your system will boot a little slower for the first two or three times after running it. After two or three reboots, nornal boot speed will return.

Now, reboot and post a new HijackThis! log into this thread.
Have completed steps as instructed. Here is my new hijack log.

Fix these two items:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Microsoft Works Update Detection] C:\Program Files\Microsoft Works\WkDetect.exe

Then reboot.

That's all the "unnecessary" items you have running.

Your Java needs updated:

The latest version out is jre1.5.0_07

You should remove previous versions via "Add/Remove Programs" before updating.

jre1.5.0_07 update link

Any noticable improvement in system performance?
There does seem to have been an improvement in the speed, particularly at startup, although the system always seems to be searching or doing something and is never idle. I would like to say a very big thanks to Micah_6.8 for taking the time to look at my log and help me eliminate unnecessary operations. At the very least it is reassuring to know that there isnt any harmful programs running on my system. And all of this within minutes of placing my first post on this forum. Excellent work and a brilliant service to all the amateurs out there like myself. I take my hat off to you all. Regards stalks
