Yesterday morning during bootup I got the imfamous message "Window installer preparing to install" followed by "Norton 2006 does not support the repair feature you need to uninstall and reinstall". So three hours later and $69.00 poorer three techs at Norton installed Hijackthis and took a walk through my computer. They left Hijackthis installed. Should I remove it? Can someone else use it to hack into my computer? Is it like having a backdoor?
Welcome to the forum :wavey: It's not a security threat, a "backdoor", nor does it take up much space. You can remove it if you wish. If you have other family members, especially younger ones, you feel might run it and "play" with it, then it may behoove you to remove it (or hide it where it can't be easily found). If not used correctly, it can harm your system. It's like a knife. In the hands of a skilled surgeon, good things happen. In the hands of "Jack the Ripper"… Well, you get the picture. :)
Basically, it's main function is to be a "tiny" registry editor.

It can also be used as a "Task Manager", and to set up a "delete file on next reboot", among other things.

It can also produce logs for various system analysis purposes.

If you have other users who might "experiment" with it, warn them of the dire consequences of such experimentation (system failure), or remove it.
:)
