I am trying to fix my sisters laptop. When i scroll down it is very choppy(the sreen). am assuming it is a
video card driver problem (more than likely there is not the proper drivers installed). I Hope some one can
help me. here is the specs on the system that i think be relevant.
Hp pavillion ze5400
Service pack 2 (xp) home edition
intel pentium 4cpu 2.66ghz 448 mb ram
You may be on the right track by pursuing a clean installation of the Drivers.
You can go to the HP site and navigate to that particular machine and find a list of downloadable drivers
Download the appropriate driver.
Next:
GoTo Control Panel - System - Hardware - click on Device Manager button
next:
Navigate down to and click on Mouse
(the mouse driver should then appear)
Is there a yellow or red warning sign?
If not, the Mouse Driver is probably not the problem.
But you can still reinstall a fresh copy of the Mouse Driver, by doing the following:
Right-click on the Mouse Driver
Select Remove
Reboot your machine and allow Windows to "find new Hardware" and "install driver for new hardware"
(During the Windows "installing driver for new hardware" you can direct the installation routine to the location where you downloaded the Driver from HP.
If that doesn't fix it………..
Do you have a PS/2 Mouse or a USB Mouse, that you can connect to her machine.
Do so if possible to compair performance of an external Mouse, as compaired to the TouchPad.
This will help you decide if it is a Hardware problem (not definitive diagnosis, but a useful piece of data in your problems solving)
It is also the case that some machines are having difficulty Scrolling while using the upgraded Internet Explorer 7.0 beta and some versions of Firefox.
Is the problem happening all the time, or just on IE, or FireFox?
It is also possible that you are having a Memory/System's Resources problem.
How many applications have to be open before the problem with scrolling begins to appear.
How about cleaning out all the temp and junk files and then doing a Scan Disk and Disk Defrag.
Following that you can run System File Checker (sfc /scannow) to determine if the operating system has any missing or corrupted files.
Please post back with your progress so we can assist with additional suggestions as necessary.

ok i checked the mouse icon under the "system" manager. there is no yellow exlamation or anything of that
nature, however there was a yellow exclamation under "other devices-video controller (VGA Compatible). i
am not sure if that is ofany concern…iam currently doing disk clean up, as well as the prescribed HP
download of drivers. any other reccomendations would be greatly appreciated seeing as how my sister is
leaving in 2 hours for colorado while i am stuck in fairbanks alaska.

You may have discovered a/the problem. Replace it the same way I described for the Mouse Driver.
While you are at the HP site see if you can determine the Video Rating of that machines display.
Shouldn't it be at least S-VGA? I really don't know, but am asking. Could make a difference though, in the performance of her graphic accelleration.
And speaking of Graphic Accelleration…… from the RAM notation, I am suspecting that the machine has "Integrated Graphic Accelleration", meaning that the graphic accelleration is integrated on the MotherBoard, instead of being a separate PCI or AGP card type graphic accellerator.
If it is "onboard graphics" (integrated on the motherboard) then the ChipSet Drivers become of maximum importance. Be sure to reinstall the Chipset Drivers. Again you should be able to download the drivers as well as instructions for installing the Chipset Drivers.
Best Regards
