I received a downloader virus last week, when my Norton Antivirus Home Edition picked it up. I use Microsoft Windows XP edition. I am using hijackthis for the first time and the downloader virus is under the name $Ncenh.dll, though it has changed as those numbers and letters I think are randomly allocated.

Also in a follow-up symptoms report, which I don't know that I really put in the first post, my IE works pretty well though I get a lot more pop-ups than normal. The pop-ups persisted before Norton picked up the virus, and I scanned my computer before the virus using norton, spybot and ad-aware. The IE seems to try to open up new pages however sometimes as it constantly clicks in and out of the current IE window (maybe trying to open a new one)
Welcome to the forum :wavey:

Step 1:

Please download Process Explorer by Sysinternals from:

Process Explorer

Download Killbox from here:

Killbox.zip © Option^Explicit

Unzip it, but don't run it yet.

Step 2:

Copy/paste the text in the Quote box below into Notepad, and save, where you can find it, as "killme.txt"

C:\WINDOWS\system32\$NCenh.dll

Step 3:

Print out the following instructions as you will not have Internet Access for the rest of this fix.

Reboot in "safe" mode.

The rest of this fix must be done in safe mode.

Unzip Process Explorer and double click on procexp.exe

In the top section of the Process Exlporer screen double-click on winlogon.exe to bring up the winlogon.exe properties screen. Click on the Threads tab at the top.

Once you see this screen click on each instance of:

$NCenh.dll

once and then click the kill button.

After you have killed all of:

$NCenh.dll

under winlogon click OK.

BE SURE TO KILL ONLY THIS FILE!!!

Next double-click on explorer.exe, select the Threads tab, and again click once on each instance of:

$NCenh.dll

then click the kill button.

BE SURE TO KILL ONLY THIS FILE!!!

Once you have done that click OK again.

Next run Hijack This! and place a check beside each of the following.

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {30e42e25-01ab-4845-802f-e139636d2739} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\$NCenh.dll

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [msci] C:\DOCUME~1\Sean\LOCALS~1\Temp\2005827141137_mcinfo.exe /insfin

O15 - Trusted Zone: *.slotchbar.com (HKLM)

O15 - Trusted IP range: 64.62.171.156

O20 - Winlogon Notify: $NCenh - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\$NCenh.dll

Now click Fix checked and close HijackThis.

Step 4:

Find and open the "killme.txt" file with Notepad.

Then copy the file name in the "killme.txt" to the clipboard by highlighting it and pressing C (hold the key down, then press C):

Close "killme.txt".

Double click on Killbox.exe and then check the Delete on reboot button.

In Killbox, past the file name in the "Full Path of File to Delete" text box.

Click the red dot with the white X in it, in the upper right of Killbox, then click "Yes", and "Yes" again.

After the reboot, "copy/paste" a new Hijack This! log file into this thread. :)
Norton is not shouting at me anymore and I don't see it in my SYSTEM 32 folder, where I originally discovered it. By golly I think it worked! Here's my HJL

You can "fix" with HijackThis!:

O15 - Trusted IP range: 64.62.171.156
(FIX ONLY IF NOT RECOGNIZED)

O21 - SSODL: NTDBGTOOL - {19CB838B-1834-4B73-8D6E-5A030684A7E4} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\msvcdycc.dll (file missing)

Remove this folder:

C:\!Killbox

Your Java needs updated:

The latest version out is jre1.5.0_07

After updating you must remove previous versions via "Add/Remove Programs".

jre1.5.0_07 update link

I see some "peer to peer file sharing" applications in your log.

There have been some very nasty infections being spread by "peer to peer" methods lately.

Be afraid… Be very, VERY, afraid…
:o

Thank you for choosing TomCoyote for your malware removal solutions.

Securing Your PC After An Attack
The IP did not return upon reboot, but the address "horse-active.net" did. I tried to delete it before, figuring it was without an IP relation in a previous HJ scan, but it returned. Any reasons why? Here's another HJL

Please download the DelDomains.inf file to your desktop from the link below.

on the link below and select Save Target As, then Save.

Domains Deleter

on the deldomains.inf file and select Install.

Note : Since ALL IE "Restricted Zone" Domains are deleted after using this fix, Spybot's Immunize feature must be used again, and you'll also have to re-install IE-SpyAd if installed.

Reboot.

See if that helps.
