I've been having problems with my computer. I get unwanted browser windows and my computer is running slower than usual. I've also noticed that the CPU is being used at least 60% even when there is nothing going on. I have e-wido and I ran it in windows safe mode. That found some things but I think there are more. I now have HijackThis and the log is posted below. Can someone take a look and tell me what they find?

Welcome to the forum. :wavey:

You have a "Vundo" (AKA "Winfixer", AKA "WinAntivirus") infection.

Download VundoFix.exe to your desktop from here:

VundoFix.exe

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

1. Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
2. Click the Scan for Vundo button.
3. Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
4. You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES.
5. Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
6. When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
7. Turn your computer back on.

Post a new HijackThis! log, along with the contents of this file:

C:\vundofix.txt

into this thread.

I did that the other day and it found and removed an infection. I did it again just now and it did not find anything. The log is posted below. Okie dokie… We'll have to do it "the long way".

Post a new HijackThis! log.

Then do this:

Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

l2mfix.exe (© Shadowwar)

l2mfix.exe (© Shadowwar)

Save the file to your desktop and l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop.

l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing .

This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, Notepad will open with a log.

Copy/paste the contents of that log into this thread.


IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder!


DO NOT REBOOT UNTIL INSTRUCTED TO DO SO.

If you reboot, the malware can mutate causing "the fix" to not work.

Step 1:

Please download Process Explorer by Systernals from:

Process Explorer

Also download/unzip KillBox by Option^Explicit from:

Killbox.zip

Step 2:

Download this file and save it where you can find it:

FixVundo Registry File

Copy/paste the text in the Quote box below into Notepad, and save it (where you can find it) as "killme.txt"

C:\WINDOWS\System32\awvvv.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\vvvwa.ini2
C:\WINDOWS\System32\vvvwa.bak2
C:\WINDOWS\System32\vvvwa.ini

Step 3:

Print out the following instructions as you will not have Internet Access for the rest of this fix.

Reboot in "safe" mode.

The rest of this fix must be done in safe mode.

Unzip Process Explorer and double click on procexp.exe

In the top section of the Process Exlporer screen double-click on winlogon.exe to bring up the winlogon.exe properties screen. Click on the Threads tab at the top.

Once you see this screen click on each instance of:

awvvv.dll

once and then click the kill button.

After you have killed all of:

awvvv.dll

under winlogon click OK.

If you see any of the files listed below, kill them as well.

Files to look for:

vvvwa.bak2
vvvwa.ini
vvvwa.tmp

BE SURE TO KILL ONLY THESE FILES!!!

Probably not all of them will be present. That is OK.

Next double-click on explorer.exe, select the Threads tab, and again click once on each instance of:

awvvv.dll

then click the kill button.

If you see any of the files listed below kill them as well.

Files to look for:

BE SURE TO KILL ONLY THESE FILES!!!

Once you have done that click OK again.

Next run Hijack This! and place a check beside each of the following.

Now click Fix checked and close HijackThis.

Now double-click on the vundo.reg file that you saved earlier and allow it to merge with the registry.

Step 4:

Find and open the "killme.txt" file with Notepad.

Then copy the all file names in the "killme.txt" to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing C (hold the key down, then press C):

Close "killme.txt".

Double click on Killbox.exe and then check the Delete on reboot button.

In Killbox, click File (in the upper left of Killbox), and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

Click the red dot with the white X in it, in the upper right of Killbox, then click "Yes", and "Yes" again.

After the reboot, "copy/paste" a new Hijack This! log file into this thread. :)
