Hi mmyers:

It is critical that every PC connected to the Internet have (only) one firewall and (only) one full time Anti-Virus installed. If you do not,

First, select a new firewall from this list:
Below you will find a link to Zone Alarm, which has a good free firewall for personal use, another for kerio and a link to sygate which may be the best, but also the hardest to use. Note that it is not advisable to run two firewalls simultaneously.
http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/cata…sku_list_za.jsp
http://www.kerio.com/us/kpf_home.html
http://smb.sygate.com/products/spf_pro.htm

Then:
To disable the XP firewall: Control Panel > Internet Options > Connections > Settings > Properties > Advanced…. Remove the check mark from the "Internet Connection Firewall" box and click "OK." Now, install your new firewall, without any further delay and certainly before going onto the internet.

Here is a link for a free AVG ANTI-VIRUS:

http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/1/lng/us/tpl/v5

Remember, Ewido is a 30 day trial offer. After 30 days it can be used to find and remove Malware, but will have no full time protection. If you do not intend to purchase Edwido, to retain its full time protection features, then it can be uninstalled and used only when needed.

Ewido has a free online scanner, with many of the same features. Lets try it now and see if Altnet is found. It is much faster than the other.

Run ewido anti-spyware's online malware scan and perform a full system scan (works only with MS Internet Explorer)
  • Install the ActiveX control when prompted
  • You will see a message that says "Please wait while the signature database is being downloaded…"
  • When the scan is ready to start, you will see a list of options:
    • Cookies
    • Registry
    • Memory
    • A list of your drives
Leave all the options checked, and click "Start Scan"
When the scan finishes, if any infections are found, select "Remove Infections", and click OK in the window that pops up.

Next, select "Save Report", and save the log to a convenient location (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
I suggest saving the report to your desktop.

Close ewido, and post the Ewido report in your next reply.

OK, I ran TrendMicro Housecall before Ewido and it found three spyware programs but could not remove two : adware_abetterinternet and adware_vistainteractive. Then I ran ewido which didn't find these two programs and only found the Adware_Altnet but as you can see in the report, was unable to delete or quarantine. On a recommendation from another computer guy at Best Buy and after looking on CNET.com I purchase and installed TrendMicro's PCCillin antiviurs software and it seems to be working well. I will install a new firewall as you recommended. Currently, I have the Spyware Blaster and ewido running to stop the spam, how does that sound? Oh, I am now getting a popup window from HYIP.com after I startup IE, maybe the Adware? Without a firewall installed, your PC is vulnerable to everything bad on the Internet. You should never go onto the Internet, for any reason, without a working firewall and an Anti-Virus. Without a Firewall and Anti-Virus installed, we are wasting our time trying to keep Viruses, Trojans, Malware and Adware off your PC. As soon as we take one off, there are thousands more waiting to jump onto an unprotected PC.

So far as I know, neither of those programs you mentioned (Spyware Blaster and ewido) will stop spam from coming onto your Outlook Express emails.

AVG Anti-Virus is free for personal use. I don't have anything to sell you.

Can't say what that popup from HYIP.com might be. So, lets find out.

Please run Hijack This again. Scan and copy the log, then post it into this topic.
OK, I have the ZoneAlarm firewall installed but it seems as if IE is running slower now, is that related? Also, almost immediately is stated that the 370a3a3a was trying to access my computer so I chose to block them, so that may help, right?

Hi mmyers:
Having Zone Alarm installed should not have any noticable effect on the speed of your PC, but the 370a3a3a you mention is on your PC and could possibly effect its speed. It was present even before ZA was installed and has been previously scheduled for removal.

Please print, or copy and paste this text into a Notepad file and place it on your desktop, to review as you work. Please proceed with this fix in the order provided below.
Please give special attention to items shown in RED

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Close all windows and browsers, leaving only HijackThis running.

Place a check beside each of these entries listed below, if still present.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [370a3a3a.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\370a3a3a.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [370a3a3a.exe] C:\Documents and Settings\Michael Myers\Local Settings\Application Data\370a3a3a.exe

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Reboot into Safe Mode: see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders shown DARK and delete them, if still present:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\370a3a3a.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Michael Myers\Local Settings\Application Data\370a3a3a.exe

Exit Explorer, enable hidden files and reboot.

If you were unable to delete any of the files, then please follow these additional instructions:
Download Pocket Killbox and unzip it; save it to your Desktop.
Run it, and click the radio button that says Delete a file on reboot. For each of the files you could not delete, paste them one at a time into the full path of file to delete box and click the red circle with a white cross in it.
The program will ask you if you want to reboot; say No each time until the last one has been pasted in whereupon you should answer Yes.
Let the system reboot.

Please run Hijack This again. Scan and copy the log, then post it into this topic.

Please advise if any problems remain.

Please use the [external image: Posted Image] button to reply.
Is there possibly something I am doing wrong that allows this program to keep re-installing itself? I had to delete the ZoneAlarm Firewall and restart Windows firewall because I wasn't sure which programs to allow or deny and I must have chosen the wrong one as I couldn't log on to the internet at all. Please advise.

I do not see any Malware that has been re-installed. Your Hijack This log looks to be clean.

You do have to be careful about what you chose to deny, or allow, access to the Internet. A few protection programs will ask this question and sometimes their meaning is not very clear.
The XP Windows firewall will protect you from many incoming threats, but does not do a good job at all against outgoing threats to the Internet. In addition, some Malware can actually disable the Windows XP firewall and you will never know it. That's why we recommend another, almost any other, firewall be installed.
Excellent! If I do notice that the 3703a3a.exe files are back, in the future, can I use the same process in the last post to remove them? I am still getting pop-ups from the HYIP.com, it's some online investment site and a few others, any suggestion, I have the pop-up blocker on IE active. Again, thanks for the help!

I do not recommend using IE for anything, except for going to the Microsoft Update site regularly and keeping IE updated. For an Internet browser I recommend Firefox (make Firefox your default browser), which has a built in popup blocker and is much safer for surfing the Internet. I also recommend getting the Google Toolbar Extension for Firefox, which has a built in popup blocker and is a very useful tool. I recommend the IE View Extension for Firefox and possibly SpellBound, a spell checker. Don't overload Firefox with too many Extensions.

Reference those popups. Try running both Ad-Aware SE and Spybot S&D, using the setup recommended previously. You will probably notice many fewer popups, using Firefox.
It would also be advisable to reset System Restore once more and setting a fresh restore point, after running those two programs, since we have removed additional Malware after resetting SR previously. That should clean up SR nicely, so you have clean restore points, if needed.

If you notice problems in the future, such as the file mentioned, please return to this site and post for assistance with their removal. There could be additional Malware present, that is not noticable, except to the trained eyes of helpers.

Surf safely. :wavey:
