Hi people,my pc with me on it had a strange problem yesterday….I would start it and it would go to the packard bell screen then the windows ME screen then it would just go right back to the start and do the same over and over……… So i got a stsrtup disk from bootdisk inserted it,chose "without cd-rom support" and from the various info out ther i have tried…c: scandisk(full one) c:scanreg/fix,scanreg/restore(picked one of 3 "started"options) Prior to the disk if i tried to use safemode i got a BSOD with WINDOWS PROTECTION ERROR SYSTEM HALTED PLEASE RESTART YOUR PC…… I had also then tried typing "sys c:"enter which transferred the files but now when i startup i get……….. HOLD CTRL+ALT+DEL TO RESTART YOUR NEW COMPUTER So i do this but it just goes past the initial PB & ME screens back to the blach screen with the above on it Please can anyone help OR my kids will be "hyjacking this".. The pc in question is not connected to internet and has had no new stuff done to it recently….
I can now get into safemode on startup but it still goes to the screen mentioned on a normal startup attempt There is a box comes up though that says……… There is a file or folder on your computer called c:\program.20060622_112811111111111111.mdmp which could cause some applications to not function properly remaming it to …(the same with extra 1 on end) would solve the problem…………. So i click to fix but it appears to come back on safemode restart wanting to add another "1" to fix it …??? Theres an ignore button too…….WHAT to do….????????? Thats if i "choose" safemode……it still does the other screen on normal startup ive gathered these are some form of de-bug file being made….i think?????? Anyway my USB mice dont work on safemode and my only ps2 mouse is knackered (if it was`nt for bad luck i would`nt have any luck) But i have managed to navigate to the device manager with just the keyboard and theres no dodgy yellow marks in there and i can get to system restore but cant actually "click next to choose restore point"with the keyboard.. So im still stumped…….Any help would be much appreciated If not my kids will"HYJACK THIS" until i get them another pc and im skint….unfotunately hyjack this dont fix THAT problem
Ive managed to get into system restore with just keyboard and am waiting to see if it works,,,,NOT THAT ANYONES INTRESTED
Interested, but no immediate sure-fire recommendation. So I was keeping my mouth shut, and hopefully waiting to learn. What would I do? No great answer available. Windows ME does not have the useful System File Checker (SFC) that was available in Win98 and every other MS operating System. In their wisdom, MS decided to incorporate SFC into System Restore and do all the monitoring/repairing automatically without owner/user participation. Therefore, the owner/user has very few options available when Operating System files become corrupt. So…. If the problem happens to be related to a "peripheral" and its driver, like a sound card, NIC, Modem, video card, etc., the owner/user can "physically" uninstall/remove the physical card(s) and reboot, hoping for a successful boot into Windows ME without the conflicting peripheral device. Then the owner/user can physically reinstall each peripheral, one at a time, booting after each peripheral is added. With this sequence, the owner/user may identify which (if any) peripheral is the culprit. Same can be done with memory…. i.e. RAM. Remove your RAM stick, use some compressed air to clean out the sockets and the contacts, then replace just one RAM stick and boot. If successful, turn off the machine, remove the successful RAM stick, and replace it with the other(s) one at a time, again hopefully identifying which physical stick of RAM was causing the problem. While the case is open, its a good time to blow out any dust bunnies and verify that all connectors are firmly plugged into their appropriate slot or drive unit. If this checking of RAM, peripheral, and connectors, results in no improvement, and you are unable to access a successful Restore Point to boot Windows, your remaining option is an over-the-top reinstallation of the Windows ME operating system, using the MS CD for ME. Doing an over-the-top reinstallation does "risk" damage/loss of data and files, but "usually" completes without a hitch and your data and files remain available. Prior to doing a reinstallation, I'd suggest that your clean out your temp and temporary internet files, cookies, prefetch, and c:\windows\temp files, just in case there is some darn thing in there causing you a problem. I do not recommend clearing/removing your Restore Points prior to reinstall/or other repair work, since even a relatively corrupt Restore Point may still give you access to booting into Windows, and without it, you would have drastically reduced your options. I sure recognize what a hassle it is trying to navigate around using the arrow and alt keys. Bummer. I'll look forward to hearing back from you regarding your progress, especially since your success may provide a plan and solution for potential other Members. Best Regards
AAHHH good day dough…ive only been on the pc for a few months but have somehow become quite (semi..ish)experianced due to the numerous amounts of strange problems from dodgy bios settings to corrupt drivers and all the numerous DE hyjacking procedures and prevention,..Ive even figured out the diffreneces between my DLL`s and my LOL`s…….but being of the mind"IF IT AINT BROKEN….THEN IM DETERMINED TO FIX IT"i have no doubt been the cause of many of my crashes, and BSOD`s…..from my m.e to this here XP back to m.e and back and forth figuring out the problem for the broken one with the one that works……(still with me?) anyway as far as the actual problem is concerned the keyboard problem AINT a problem(i learn quick eh?)and as far as that system restore was concerned it made no difference so then i went on to practically uninstall everything in the device manager which has made no difference so then i tried(just for the sake of it)running the scandisk and defrag which proceeded to find numerous errors that i fixed as requested and then it run the defrag which was done successfully so then i try restart again in normal mode but still it goes to a black screen with……. PLEASE PRESS CTRL+ALT+DEL TO RESTART YOUR COMPUTER in the top left hand corner……..Im not sure it was clear in my previous posts but when this began i could`nt even get into safemode(bsod windows protection error system halted please restart etc)And it`s only since figuring out that the red recovery disk that came with the pc(bought of friend 5/6 months ago)was`nt working that i found my way to bootdisk and got an emergancy startup disk and tried a scandisk,scanreg\restore….and sys c: and mabey even a couple of other commands and trys at stuff(????:-))i`d seen on all the various places????????????????:-(..So now ive got only safe mode back with the black normal start screen….. AND THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTREST………..(you`ll soon have had enough of me:-)) And here i am???? PS theres never anything in any of the C:\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\ or caches or cookiies or any of the other sneaky little places i know of….it`s not connected to the internet but when it last was (last week)it was always fastidiously de hyjacked & spybooted,ewido`ed,de-adawared etc etc most of its diskspace is free apart from all the mentioned programs and a couple of others… In fact my pc`s(if & when they work)are apparently invisable to the internet when on it and all my 1000`s of ports dont exist if anyone looks……SO i cant be anything like that left lurking…….this one posts turning into a bit of a manuscript…sorry….Anyway like my compatriot "The Bruce"i will try try try try try try and try again and i will overcome……(with a little help hopefully:-)) SO ..Back into the breach my friend…………… PPS aint got the cd`s for neither the m.e or this xp……..got the boot disk for the me now though………apparently need several for xp boot disk……i might be wrong??? OHH AND ive had it opened and checked THE stick of ram and the ide(?)connections(something like that?) and it`s dust bunnyless etc etc
And in and out "msconfig" killing startups and wini`s…….something like that…in-out -in-out & in again killing them them softly……………………with this love:-)……Theres just tooooo many combinations and ive had them all "off" as well though……………………Im begining to think now that whatever the original problem was is fixed as i got back into safemode…so WHATever was done between times with the startup disk…especially the "sys c:"is mabey now the different problem….just when it initially said"press ctrl+alt+del to restart your NEW computer"…. and now it`s the same BUT without the word"new"….I dont know …..????????????it`s all getting the better of me AND m.e… Usually when one pc goes it lies in the corner after some exploratory remedying until the answer dawns on me a week or two later when reading up on some other calamity…im probably wrong about it being a "different"problem but unfortunately it`s tough enough understanding things you think WITHOUT having to explain it properly too
OK people i managed to fix it by using the startup disk and typing….cd\Windows\Options\Cabs…then………..setup /im /is…..so it reinstalled windows from the cab folder but ive still got all my programs there ALONG with a lot of the MS stuff that i had previously took off…… SO although my eyes are hurting and my heads banging after 3ish days it WAS as usual only a few clicks of a button away(well, a few typed commands seeing as none of my mice worked) Thank you though dough…im now experienced in keyboard funtions so much so i use them on HERE now too(much quicker)AND i can reinstall the thing in some manner now whenever calamity arises .ALL i need to do now is figure out how to do the same from the 1386 file on this xp as it has a few problems that require cd i aint got………just need to figure out how to get round the self installed SP2…….I`ll find time for the "html"somewhere in between ….haha….CHEERS AGAIN
