Hi,

This is my first scan and post so please forgive me if I give too much info….

I believe I have the Security 2k Hijacker on my computer. It has changed my internet explorer homepage to a phony security website. I have used Webroot Spy Sweeper and Ad-aware SE (not to mention I have Norton Antivirus which keeps alerting me to a Trojan.Zlob) to remove it but it keeps coming back. I am running Windows XP here is my HijackThis scan (thanks for your help :D) :

Hi anmnoel:

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/proc…processutil.htm

Then, please run Hijack This. Scan and copy the log, then post it into this topic, along with the SmitfraudFix report.

Hi anmnoel:
SmitFraud is verified, now we can attempt to remove it.

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site. Please follow the instructions exactly in the order listed; this is very important!

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process. A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Then please restart it into Normal Windows.

Please post the contents of the SmitfraudFix log located at C:\rapport.txt into this thread, along with a new HijackThis log.

Please use the [external image: Posted Image] button to reply.

Let me know if you see anything else. My computer is running much better now! Thank you so much! Also, is SmitFraud a keylogger? Should I be concerned about my information on Quicken? I noticed my firewall blocked a TON of access attempts while I was infected….
Hi anmnoel:

It does look like Smitfraud is gone. Good news.
To the best of my knowledge, Smitfraud does not include a Keylogger.

There is not a lot left to do, so far as I can see.

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Disable SpySweeper:
You have SpySweeper installed. While this is a great program, we need to temporarily disable (not uninstall) the program because it might stop our fix.
  • Open it click >Options over to the left then >program options>Uncheck "load at windows startup"
  • Over to the left click "shields" and uncheck all there.
  • Uncheck" home page shield".
  • Uncheck ''automatically restore default without notification".
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable SpySweeper again.

Close all Windows and browsers, leaving only HijackThis running.

Place a check against each of the following.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [620d7e4a.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\620d7e4a.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [620d7e4a.exe] C:\Documents and Settings\Manuel\Local Settings\Application Data\620d7e4a.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_04\bin\jusched.exe

O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_04\bin\npjpi150_04.dll
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Sun Java Console - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_04\bin\npjpi150_04.dll

Then, click on FIX CHECKED

Reboot into Safe Mode:
see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders shown DARK and delete them:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\620d7e4a.exe

C:\Documents and Settings\Manuel\Local Settings\Application Data\620d7e4a.exe

C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_04\bin\npjpi150_04.dll

For the following, do an ALL FILES SEARCH and delete it.
ALCXMNTR.EXE

Exit Explorer, enable hidden files and reboot as normal.

* Clean your Cache and Cookies in IE:

Close all instances of Outlook Express and Internet Explorer
Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab
Click the "Delete Cookies" button
Next to it, Click the "Delete Files" button
When prompted, place a check in: "Delete all offline content", click OK

* Clean your Cache and Cookies in Firefox (In case you also have Firefox installed):

Go to Tools > Options.
Click Privacy in the menu on the left side of the Options window.
Click the Clear button located to the right of each option (History, Cookies, Cache).
Click OK to close the Options window
Alternatively, you can clear all information stored while browsing by clicking Clear All.
A confirmation dialog box will be shown before clearing the information.
* Clean other Temporary files + Recycle bin

Go to start > run and type: cleanmgr and click ok.
Let it scan your system for files to remove.
Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
Press OK to remove them.

I see your Sun Java is out of date.
It is important to remove older versions as these are the ones with the holes in them. First, Uninstall all versions of Sun Java, from Add/Remove Programs. Then,
Download the Newest Version>>>> http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp

Once installed, it is very important to test and see that it is in fact installed >>>> Use this link. Sun Java Test

Then, please run Hijack This again. Scan and copy the log and post it into this topic.

Please advise if any problems remain.

Please use the [external image: Posted Image] button to reply.
Hi Piatan,

Thanks for your instructions. I accomplished all that was asked *except*, when searching (using windows explorer) for C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\620d7e4a.exe and C:\DOCUMENTS and SETTINGS\Manuel\Local Settings\Application Data\620d7e4a.exe those files I could not locate. I don't know if this is a good thing or a bad thing but I couldn't find them anywhere….

Everything else went perfectly no problems to report…here is my Hijackthis scan

Hi anmnoel:

We want to be sure this is done. Please use the "test", to be sure Sun Java is installed. I do not see it in your current Hijack This log.

Download the Newest Version>>>> http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp

Once installed, it is very important to test and see that it is in fact installed >>>> Use this link. Sun Java Test

=========================================================

Your Hijack This logfile looks to be clean. Congratulations.

If everything seems to be in order, I suggest the following.

One of the best features of Windows XP is the System Restore option, however if Malware infects a computer with this operating system the Malware can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after a virus removal.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

Download the new Ad-Aware SE version, and follow the instructions on how to do a full scan: http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?showtopic=11150
-reboot after using Ad-Aware SE. Also while there get the VX2 plugin and follow the instructions to run it also.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
I also suggest that you delete any files from "temp", "tmp" folders. In Internet Explorer, click on "Tools" => "Internet Options" => "Delete Files" and select the box that says "Delete All Offline Content" and click on "OK" twice. Also, empty the recycle bin by right clicking on it and selecting "Empty Recycle Bin". These steps should be done on a regular basis.

And also see TonyKlein's good advice
http://castlecops.com/postlite7736-.html
So how did I get infected in the first place?

Safe surfing. :wavey:
Thanks Piatan….I am having a problem installing Sun Java. I have tried 4 times to install it. Each time I get a report that it installed fine and it even installed the Google Toolbar, but when I go to verify the installtion on the test page nothing happens. I went thru the troubleshooting guide and it directs me to click "tools" (in my browser), "internet options" and then the "advanced tab". From there it directs me to look for the "Java" section and click the enable radio button….problem is, is that there is no "Java" section and when I go to my control panel (classic view) I do not see the Java logo coffee cup….any suggestions? Do I need to take this to another topic? Again thank you so much for all your help
Hi anmnoel: Do an All Files Search for "Sun Java". Be sure to click on All Files first, in the search box. It may have downloaded to another place and needs to be moved. Failing that, download it again and pay close attention to where it is downloading. That may solve the mystery of the "disapearing coffee cup". Hope this helps. :D
