"After Discovery's 2005 flight, NASA discovered that insulation around the wiring had trapped air, which turned to a liquid in the cold and filled tiny voids in the foam. As the pressure changed during launch, the liquid transitioned to gas and popped off pieces of foam. But the foam debris issue still has not been resolved. And NASA's top safety official, along with its chief engineer, both recently voted against clearing Discovery for its July 1 launch. They were overruled by NASA administrator Michael Griffin and other top managers... When 2.5 million moving parts catapult through the atmosphere, the odds of something going terribly wrong remain a sobering one in 100, said shuttle program manager Wayne Hale."

"CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida (Reuters) - A pencil-sized crack in the foam insulation on space shuttle Discovery's external tank sent NASA experts into meetings on Monday to determine whether to go ahead with Tuesday's scheduled launch. At about 5 inches by about 1/2 inch, the crack is small compared with the briefcase-sized chunk of foam that doomed shuttle Columbia in 2003, but it is located in an area of the tank that could shed debris onto the shuttle at launch. NASA scheduled an afternoon news conference to announce its plans for Tuesday's scheduled Fourth of July launch..."

"HOUSTON (Reuters) - The first spacewalk slated for the shuttle Discovery crew on Saturday may be one small step for NASA, but a giant leap for the two men trying to discover if a spindly 100-foot (30-meter) boom can put distant parts of the spaceship within reach for emergency repairs... Saturday's spacewalk, which is the first of three planned during Discovery's newly extended 13-day mission, is focused on tests to determine if the 100-foot-long span is stable enough to serve as a work platform. The spacewalk is scheduled to start about 8:13 a.m. CDT (1313 GMT) and last 6 1/2 hours... NASA hopes to resume space station construction, which has been on hold since the Columbia disaster, with two more flights this year and about four a year thereafter. The station must be finished before the shuttle fleet is retired in 2010, as there are no other vehicles that can carry the laboratories, structural trusses and solar power arrays into space and assemble them in orbit."
