Hello! My weekly AVG scan gave me a start this morning with news of this 'trojan horse Clicker.PC' sitting in my System Volume Information folder (tho' tracking down the folder and hovering the cursor indicates the folder is 'empty'). The string listed is: C:\System Volume Information\_restore{…}\RP281\A0027318.exe:\iexplorer.exe, with a shorter version listed underneath marked with a zip-file icon. The status is listed as 'infected, imbedded object' and 'infected, archive'. Is there any way of removing this thing before it starts any damage (if it hasn't already)? I'd post an HJT log but I don't like to do that without prompting… Thanks!
Hello and welcome to TomCoyote forum. We start with a HJT log in this forum. I would like to look at yours, this information will help you post it correctly:
http://russelltexas.com/malware/createhjtfolder.htm
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial94.html

Let's talk about your issue. AVG is scanning your System Restore files and it appears you have bad stuff backed up in there which will infect you again if you need to use System Restore for a valid reason. What we want to do it purge the System Restore files, by turning it off and restarting your computer, then turning it back on, all old SR files will be gone and a new SR point will be established. Here are the directions:
1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Complete that, then run your AVG again to make sure that junk is gone, then post a HJT log so I can make sure you have no other problems.

Thanks for returning your information and good job driving off that wild horse  Your HJT log looks fine, you do have a couple of lines of clutter so I will offer you the opportunity to do a little cleaning. I will also clean your Prefetch unless you do it yourself and you might slow a little until Windows repopulates it. See the link for information.

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Enable hidden files&folders..reverse the process when finished.
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\Windows\Prefetch\ >>> delete the contents (NOT THE FOLDER)
Prefetch info: http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_…refetch-XP.html

If you don't have a good cleaner, use this free one with these instructions:
Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Review the instructions http://www.ccleaner.com/help/tour1.asp
Run CCleaner, Windows & Applications when you run the registry cleaner (Issues) you will be prompted to backup before you can remove stuff, make sure you do.

I will leave you with this information and there is no need to post again unless you want.
