Hi zapiram,
I don't have much experience advising "botanicals" on the particulars of CD/DVD usage, but since I often feel like a vegatable myself, when using computers, I thought I'd give it a try.
Is this CD/DVD unit "new" to your machine or part of the original equipment?
Have you installed any other "new" hardware or software?
Take a look in Device Manager - CD ROM
Click CD ROM to expand that section.
Do you see any yellow or red warnings?
In General, any CD or DVD player will be recognized by Windows and allowed to read/play as a CD ROM
For DVD playing, and CD or DVD burning, additional software is required.
For DVD playing, the DVD unit will have come with additional software (quite often a program called Power DVD) that allows the unit to read/play DVD formatted disks.
If you have yellow or red warnings in Device manager, you may need to select to "Remove" the driver and then reboot your computer to allow Windows to "find new hardware" and "install drivers for new hardware".
Additionally, You may need to reinstall the "Power DVD" (or similar) software.
If all of the above seems to be in order, and the CD DVD unit is still not recognizing any disk, you may want to check in your CMOS to be assured that the settings there allow the recognition of your unit.
Without further information from you, that's as far as my recommendations go at this time.
Have you opened the case of your computer recently? Made any changes connecting Hard Drive or CD/DVD units to your IDE ribbon cables?
Please let us know how your are progressing and provide whatever additional information you can that would help us focus in on your specific problem.
Best Regards
