My DVD player stopped working recently, but the CD player (same drive) still works. Any ideas as to what might be going on here? Thanks, Chris Brown

What program do you use to play DVDs? What happens when you put a DVD into the computer? Does the DVD show up under My Computer but the Play option doesn't work? Or does the computer say that the drive is empty even though you put the DVD in it?

They are different reading devices so it is quite possible for one to fail without the other being affected.

Just for a try you might uninstall the drive and then re-start the computer.

This will force a re-detection and re-install of the drivers.

To do so right click My Computer then click Manage then Device Manager.

Then click the + next to DVD/CD-ROM drives.

Right click your drive and choose Uninstall.

Re-start your computer.

As mentioned there are two different heads in a combo drive so it is quite possible the DVD head malfunctioned without any affect on the CD head.

You might also try this for the sake of "why not":

You could also try a drive cleaner:
