Computer logging off

My computer starts logging off (Windows XP) at random times. McAfee also keeps telling me that I have an Internet Explorer Security Zones Monitor change. I have scanned my computer with McAfee Antispyware and with the virus scan. Any suggestions??

These tell me that you have a "Vundo" (also known as "Winfixer") infection:

Let's clear that up, then see how things go for you.

Download VundoFix.exe to your desktop from here:

VundoFix.exe

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

1. Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
2. Click the Scan for Vundo button.
3. Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
4. You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES.
5. Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
6. When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
7. Turn your computer back on.

Post a new HijackThis! log, along with the contents of this file:

C:\vundofix.txt

into this thread.

DON'T START THIS "FIX" UNTIL YOU CAN LEAVE THE MACHINE ON UNTIL WE ARE DONE.

THE FILES THAT NEED REMOVED WILL MULTIPLY OR CHANGE WITH EACH REBOOT.

Run HijackThis!

Click the "Open the Misc Tools section" Button.

Click the "Open process manager" Button.

Check the "Show DLL's" box (upper right).

In the upper window, click on each running process, then look in the lower window.

Find and post the name of each process using C:\WINDOWS\system32\jkhfc.dll

Post back, letting me know ALL the processes using that DLL.

Then I need this:

Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

l2mfix.exe (© Shadowwar)

l2mfix.exe (© Shadowwar)

Save the file to your desktop and l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop.

l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing .

This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, Notepad will open with a log. Copy/paste the contents of that log into this thread.


IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder!


With all this info, I can prepare the "fix".

I'm at work at the moment, but will check back at about 11:30 CDT

After you supply this info, I'll prepare the "fix" and make a post.

Then after you run the "fix", your system should be "clean", so it shouldn't be much longer.

Well… The good news is that you've just got that one stubborn file to deal with. :thumbup:

This is how we used to deal with Vundo (or Winfixer) before that other program came along.

Step 1:

Please download Process Explorer by Systernals from:

Process Explorer

Also download/unzip KillBox by Option^Explicit from:

Killbox.zip

Step 2:

Download this file and save it where you can find it:

FixVundo Registry File

Copy/paste the text in the Quote box below into Notepad, and save it someplace you can find it, and save it as "killme.txt"

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\jkhfc.dll


Step 3:

Print out the following instructions as you will not have Internet Access for the rest of this fix.

Reboot in "safe" mode.

The rest of this fix must be done in safe mode.

Unzip Process Explorer and double click on procexp.exe

In the top section of the Process Exlporer screen double-click on winlogon.exe to bring up the winlogon.exe properties screen. Click on the Threads tab at the top.

Once you see this screen click on each instance of jkhfc.dll once and then click the kill button.

After you have killed all of the jkhfc.dll under winlogon click OK.

BE SURE TO KILL ONLY THIS FILE!!!


Next double-click on explorer.exe, select the Threads tab, and again click once on each instance of jkhfc.dll then click the kill button.

After you have killed all of the jkhfc.dll under winlogon click OK.

BE SURE TO KILL ONLY THIS FILE!!!

Close procexp.exe

Next run Hijack This! and place a check beside each of the following.

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {06C7CAB4-39AC-499F-BCD2-D487DAC7A73C} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\jkhfc.dll

O20 - Winlogon Notify: jkhfc - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\jkhfc.dll

Now click Fix checked and close HijackThis.

Now double-click on the vundo.reg file that you saved earlier and allow it to merge with the registry.

Step 4:

Now, run Killbox.

In Killbox select "Delete on Reboot".

Open the "killme.txt" file with Notepad.

Then copy/paste the line from the "killme.txt" into the "Full Path of File to Delete" text box in Killbox.

Close "killme.txt".

Click the red dot with the white X in it, in the upper right of Killbox, then click "Yes", and "Yes" again.

After the reboot, "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread. :)

Hum, the bad news is that I didn't double click in the process explorer and I killed something and got the blue screem of death. The good news is that when I rebooted, everything still worked and then I read the directions carefully! :D
