I am new so forgive me if I don't do this all right. The problem I have been having is that McAfee virus keeps telling me it has cleaned a trojan in two different places, one in my documents and one in system files. It says it is cleaned but it continues to come up saying this every 3 seconds. I was referred here and hope you can help. Thanks so much!

Bump.
I know I am bumping a little early but my computer keeps shutting off randomly and I don't know how long it will last. Thanks so much!

Here is a fresh log file as I had a worm show up in my system files as well.

Hello DanaE and welcome to TomCoyote. :wavey:

Step 1
Move HijackThis to Permanent Folder:
You are running HijackThis from a Temp directory. These are cleaned up on a regular basis thus the program will be removed.
  • Go to Start > My Computer > and double click on C:.
  • Now right click an open area and click New > folder and change the folder name to HJT.
  • Move HijackThis from the Temp folder into this new folder.
Step 2
Open HijackThis, run a scan, then check the following:

F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=userinit.exe,xpjava.exe
O9 - Extra button: Related - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Show &Related Links - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

Step 3
Please set your computer to show all files.
  • Double-click My Computer.
  • Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
  • Click the View tab.
  • Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
  • Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
  • Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
You will need to reverse this process when all steps are done.

Step 4
Please delete the following files/folders:
You'll need to search for these files with Explorer to delete. They may be in C:\WINDOWS\system32\ or C:\WINDOWS\
(Start > Search > All files and folders > More advanced options place a check in the first three boxes)

xpjava.exe

If you have any problem deleting these items, reboot into Safe Mode (tap F8 during bootup, use arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then hit 'enter') and try again.

Step 5
Reboot normally and Run at least two of the following online virus scans making sure to reboot in between each one. Allow them to fix anything they find. You need to use Internet Explorer or Netscape browsers.
Bitdefender
Pandasoftware
Trend Micro << Click Auto Clean
Symantec Security Check << click scan for viruses
RAV Online Virus Scanner << Enter your e-mail address and click on To continue without subscribing
McAfee
Write down anything that can not be fixed. Include the file name and the path to the file.

Step 6
Scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread. Include anything that can not be fixed by the online scans.
Please let us know of any complications you had and how the computer is behaving.

Here is my new log. I have followed all of the steps and I am still getting the same message from McAfee saying a trojan has been detected and cleaned. it was in c:/documents and settings/msdirectx.sys by a FURootkit. The message pops up about every 3 seconds. I tried to scan with the others you recommended but I can't get my computer to stay on long enough to download everything to do so. All I could scan with was my own McAfee virusscan.

I scanned again and found another trojan called multi-dropperBN in my system files….ah!!! I hope we can get this fixed. :) Thank you so much!
To use RootKit Revealer please make sure you are logged in as an Administrator to the computer.

1. Please download and unzip Rootkit Revealer to your desktop.

2. Please leave the defaults set as they are to:
* Hide NTFS Metadata Files: this option is on by default
* Scan Registry: this option is on by default.

3. Launch rootkit revealer on the system and press the Scan button.
RootkitRevealer scans the system reporting its actions in a status area at the bottom of its window and noting discrepancies in the output list. It may take a long time please disconnect from the internet and leave the PC to be scanned until it is finished.

4. The log can be very large please edit out the items in the following folders in the log : C:\RECYCLER\NPROTECT and C:\System Volume Information, if in the log, before posting it.

5. Please post the balance of the log here in this thread using Add Reply (please double check that it has all been posted as it may be too long for one post)

That last HijackThis log was run from a very old version of HijackThis. Please delete that version and move the version 1.99.1 that you did the original scan with to this folder C:\HIJACK THIS\. Post the new log from Hijackthis along with the log from RootkitRevealer.
Okay, I downloaded the rootkit and I scanned once and found 6 things then my computer shut down, this continued with similiar results, finding only 1 or 3 discrepencies. Finally it comes up with the msdirectx.sys which my McAfee had been showing, and I was able to save that. Then I scanned again and this time got a HUGE page. My computer said rootkit had to be shut down but I think I got everything saved first. I'll post the log in another post after this. Thanks again!
This is my new HijackThis log.

The Rootkit log is very large, probably 6 posts or more. I will get it up when I get off work, sorry for the delay.

The log I was going to post earlier ended up being 327 pages, so I scanned again and got this one. I don't know why I get a different scan everytime. I hope this helps. That log didn't show what I was hoping to see. We need to make sure this infection is fixed properly as your computer may not boot up if done incorrect.

Open HijackThis, click None of the above, just start the program.
Click Config…, then Misc Tools.
Under StartupList, check the boxes for List also minor sections (full) and List Empty Sections (complete).
Click Generate StartupList Log and Yes at the pop-up message.

Please let us know of any complications you had and how the computer is behaving.
When I tried to delete C:\Progam Files\Media Access it said I could not delete becaues it could not delete salmhook.dll
Then when I tried to delete C:\Progam Files\180searchassistant, it said it couldn't delete mediaaccC.dll
After running McAfee it deleted my same FURootkit as always but this time in C:\Recycler\s-1-5-21, however I continue to get the message that a trojan has been detected and cleaned found in documents\msdirectx.sys
My computer is also continuing to shut down if I leave it alone for more than 2 minutes at a time. I get the blue screen saying memory dump and many other things then it shuts down and restarts.
Also I could not find xpjava.exe when I went to delete it, I searched for it and scrolled the folder as well, yet it is still in my log.
Thanks so much for your help as always!

Let's try this again in Safe Mode to see if McAfee can remove the file that keeps reinstalling the infection.

Step 1
Reboot the computer into Safe Mode (tap F8 during bootup, use arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then hit 'enter').

Open HijackThis, click None of the above, just start the program.
Click Config… < Misc Tools < Open Process Manager.

Locate the following process and click once on it to highlight it.

C:\WINDOWS\System32\xpjava.exe

Click Kill Process.

Repeat this for these processes:

C:\Program Files\Media Access\MediaAccK.exe
C:\Program Files\Media Access\MediaAccess.exe

Now click back and Scan, then check the following:

F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=userinit.exe,xpjava.exe

O23 - Service: YEZYVLZMSAZV - Sysinternals - www.sysinternals.com - C:\DOCUME~1\Dana\LOCALS~1\Temp\YEZYVLZMSAZV.exe

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

Step 2
Please set your computer to show all files.
  • Double-click My Computer.
  • Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
  • Click the View tab.
  • Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."

Please let us know of any complications you had and how the computer is behaving.
Okay, everything went smoothly this time and I was able to delete all files, folders, etc. that you asked me to. When I scanned with McAfee the only new thing to pop up was a w32/sdbot.worm.gen.bw in kimo.exe which it said it deleted. I am glad to say though that I am no longer getting the trojan pop up and I think we may have everythign squared away! :) Here is a fresh log to have you take a look at though.
