Hello laptop has a problem. I've run ad-aware, spybot and cwshredder, but running into problems in spybot when I tell it to "fix problems", it starts to remove them but program hangs - program is not responding - I have to end the task. Here is the hijackthis log - could someone take a look for me to see if there is a virus causing this problem. Thank you very much.

Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [defender] C:\\defender21.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Windows Logon Application] C:\WINNT\system32\winIogon.exe

O23 - Service: Microsoft Windows System32 - Unknown owner - C:\WINNT\windll32.exe

Then click "Fix checked".

Reboot in "safe" mode.

Delete all of the following noted (in red) file(s)/FOLDER(s) you can find:

c:\defender21.exe <— file

c:\winnt\system32\winiogon.exe <— file
(Warning!!! Do not delete c:\winnt\system32\winlogon.exe !!!)

Looks good.

It also appears you have no active antivirus or firewall. Those are a "must" in todays world.

If you'd like to check for any malware that doesn't show in a HijackThis! log, here are links to free online virus scans you can try:

Trend-Micro Housecall
Put on 'Autoclean' and delete what it can't clean.

Panda Activescan
Accept default settings.

Etrust Security Advisor
Choose 'Cure' whatever is found, then delete if unsuccessful.

Reboot after each scan.

Post Infection Items To Ponder
Thanks for all your help. Yes I agree this laptop (neighbors) needs an anti virus (AVG Free) and FireWall (ZoneAlarm). It had SpyWare Stormer on it and Spy Bot caught it and got rid of it. I will try connecting it to the internet now and run it through the virus checkers you recommended. Hopefully whatever was trying to download each time I connected will be gone! Thanks a million.
