Hi.
I'm new to forums & logs & probably don't know what I'm talking about but my computer is possessed. I downloaded Spybot & AdAware, made sure I had the most updated versions, & they both detected problems that couldn't be fixed. I had to download Hijack several times because it kept not responding but I finally got some sort of a log here! Yea!
OK, attempting to post it…

I've tried ending these through task manager but they come right back. Can't delete the folder either, but I guess you've heard all this before…

Appreciate any help you can give me (written for the PC-Challenged).
Thanks,
Marci.
Hello NCFrogGirl and welcome to TomCoyote. :wavey:

You have Spybot S&D's Teatimer running which is good, but we need you to disable it for the remainder of the fix as it will interfere with the registry changes being made.
Open Spybot S&D in advanced mode, click Tools > Resident, and remove the check from "Resident Tea-Timer". Reboot after unchecking the entry.

Be sure to re-enable this option again once the computer is clean.

Click Start < Run and type services.msc. Scroll down to WinTools for IE service and right click on it. Click Properties and under Service Status click Stop, then under Startup Type change it to Disabled. Uninstall Wintools from Add/Remove Programs.

Scan with HijackThis and post the new log as a reply to this thread.
OK, followed your directions word for word. When I was in Add/Remove Programs to unistall, I had a box come up that said I needed to be connected to the internet to do that & also I should reboot afterwards. I figured that, knowing my luck, that was just some gimmick to ensure that the dayam thing didn't get uninstalled properly so I stayed off-line, didn't reboot & made another log….

Hope I did that right.
Also, my Task Manager has gone weird - the bar across the top is missing so I have no way to close it - other than to "end process" - & no tabs. It's also now only about half an inch wide & I have to stretch it out! Is this Wintools related or do I have other issues here, & what in the world is "rpen.exe"??
Thanks!
Marci.
For TaskManager, try double clicking it with your mouse and see if that will bring back the missing parts.

Step 1
Please delete the version of HijackThis you have now. There is a new version out which you can get here. Save the file to your desktop.

Double click HijackThis_sfx.exe and select Unzip. When done click "OK".
Close the WinZip self Extractor window.

Navigate to C:\Program Files\HijackThis and double click HijackThis.exe. Scan with HijackThis and post the new log as a reply to this thread.

Step 2
Open HijackThis, run a scan, then check the following:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Window Title = -
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName =

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {BDF3E430-B101-42AD-A544-FADC6B084872} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {D9AB7E96-9300-C4A4-7557-985B552E6095} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\xdnhwd.dll

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Uninstall_WinTools] C:\WINDOWS\Temp\WTuninst.exe /remove
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Microsoft Services] svssshost.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Usrr] C:\Documents and Settings\home\Application Data\rpen.exe

O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0013-0001-0002-ABCDEFFEDCBA} -

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

Step 3
Please set your computer to show all files.
  • Double-click My Computer.
  • Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
  • Click the View tab.
  • Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
  • Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
  • Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
You will need to reverse this process when all steps are done.

Step 4
Please delete the following file:

C:\Documents and Settings\home\Application Data\rpen.exe

You'll need to search for these files with Explorer to delete. They may be in C:\WINDOWS\system32\ or C:\WINDOWS\
(Start > Search > All files and folders > More advanced options place a check in the first three boxes)

svssshost.exe

If you have any problem deleting these files, reboot into Safe Mode (tap F8 during bootup, use arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then hit 'enter') and try again.

Step 5
Please delete your temporary files by deleting all files and folders that are in those folders (do not delete the temp folder itself) like for example
C:\WINDOWS\Temp\
C:\Temp\
C:\Documents and Settings\Every username\Local Settings\Temp\
Also delete your Temporary Internet Files (Start > Control Panel > Internet Options > Delete Files), be sure to also select delete all offline content.
Empty the Recycle Bin.

Step 6
Reboot normally and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread.
Please let us know of any complications you had and how the computer is behaving.
OK, I printed out your instructions so I'd get this right!
Downloaded the new Hijack & here's the log…

I'm off to do Step 2
back soon….
OK, I'm back.
Couldn't find the svssshost.exe anywhere - I'm assuming that's a good thing?
I don't have a C:\Temp file but I have one called "tmp". It had some .dlls & something called "engine.exe" so I left it alone.
There were 2 files I couldn't delete under my user local settings temp file:
CmdLineExt02 - said Access Denied
Perflib_Perdata_f7c - said in use by another person or program.
Everything else went smoothly & I have my task manager back now - thanks!
Also nothing weird seems to be happening anywhere else. My connection speed has jumped back up from about 26 to 45ish - don't know if that was related or not. My windows aren't disappearing online this session & no annoying ads so far.
Here's the new log:

Marci.
Your new log is clean.:)

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the System Restore tab, put a check mark in the 'Turn Off System Restore' check box.
3. Click OK twice, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer.
4. Repeat steps 1 - 2, this time clearing the box beside 'Turn Off System Restore'

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you get these programs to help keep the computer clean:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer. Spyware Blaster runs silently in the background.
SpywareGuard - Real-time protection from spyware installation attempts
ie-spyad - Puts over 8,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites for Internet Explorer.
Google Toolbar - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
Firefox - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.

AVG AntiVirus - Free antivirus program if you currently are not using one.
ZoneAlarm - Free firewall program if you currently are not using one.

Here are three very good and free malware scanners:

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.3
AdAware SE v1.05
Set-up Instructions for Spybot S&D; and Adaware SE
A2 Squared

If you have them already, check to make sure that they are the newest version.

Update these regularly.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-virus updated.
