Where is the Internet Explorer version info stored that programs like yahoo tool bar and MS Update look at before they will download. The error returned is that they need IE ver 5 or higher. Ver 6 is instaled and runs OK. I need to modify that line to correct this so I can receive MS updates, install Yahoo tool bar, etc Thanks, Don

Thanks Juliet, I know what vervion is installed and the MS procedure for you to check it agrees but download/installs like yahoo tool bar and MS updates are getting their version info elsewhere and something is indicating to those quries that the version is not 5 or higher. Where is the info or code that the pre-installers check to get the IE version info, from the register or a file somewhere or where? Don

Don, On the page Juliet linked, quite a ways down the page, you will find a notation of the Registry String where IE version is recorded. You'll also find a table of versions and their full version number designation. If you are not handy with creating registry strings, you may want to discuss the specifics here. Best Regards

The problem isn't just determining the version because as the MS doc instructs everything in the register is correct to the version that's installed and the register entries match the ones on another computer I have running WinXP SP2. Apparently MS Updates and Yahoo tool bar type installs are checking elsewhere for the IE version. Where does Yahoo Tool bar install check to determine that the version of IE is not 5 or later? The version is 6.00.2900 build 2180 Don

Installed but all are inactive/disabled. Here's what MS displays when you click on the update selection. "Thank you for your interest in obtaining updates from our site. To use this site, you must be running Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 or later. " Yahoo tool bar installer replies is the same. Google tool bar install OK. I'm running 6.xxx

Read over this Microsoft article for repairing and reinstalling IE.

scroll to Use the System File Checker tool ...............Note that you may be prompted for the Windows XP or Windows XP Service Pack 1 installation media if corrupt files are found.
