Thanks for sending your information. We are sorry for the delay in responding. The volunteers here are swamped and unfortunately not all logs get answered as quickly as we'd like.

If you still need help with your problem, please run Hijack This again. Scan and copy the log, then post it here, in this topic . We do need to see a current logfile.

Please provide a description of the problem.

Please do not edit your Hijack This log. We need to see the entire logfile, with no revisions. If anything is disabled using MSCONFIG, please enable all, before scanning with Hijack This.

Hi dadeo58:

Please print, or copy and paste this text into a Notepad file and place it on your desktop, to review as you work.

HijackThis is being run from a temporary folder; this means that any backups it creates as a result of fixes made with it will be lost. Please create a new folder for it and place the program into that new folder.

Next:
Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Please do not run it yet.

Download roguescanfix.exe, and save it to your desktop.
Double click roguescanfix.exe to install it.

Please do not run it yet.

Please download, install, and update the free version of Ewido Anti - Malware:
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  • When you run Ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  • From the main Ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
  • After the update finishes, the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful"
  • Exit Ewido. DO NOT run a scan yet.

If you do not already have Ad-Aware SE 1.06 installed, follow these download and setup instructions. Also check for updates:
    Ad-Aware SE Setup

Again, do NOT run a scan yet.

Open the roguescanfix folder, and doubleclick run.bat.
Your desktop and icons will disappear and then reappear again, this is normal.
Wait till the message "Completed script execution" appear, then click OK.
    Click "Exit" to close BFU.
Click "OK" to start the SpywareQuake/Spyfalcon uninstaller, after that click "uninstall".

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
    1. Restart your computer
    2. After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
    3. Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
    4. Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items:

      R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,SearchURL = http://www.begin2search.com/sidesearch.html
      R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\WINDOWS\about.htm
      R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\WINDOWS\about.htm
      O2 - BHO: Nothing - {b0398eca-0bcd-4645-8261-5e9dc70248d0} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\hp339D.tmp (file missing)
      O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {2318C2B1-4965-11d4-9B18-009027A5CD4F} - (no file)

      Then, click on FIX CHECKED.

      While remaining in SAFE MODE:

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders shown DARK and delete them, if found:

      C:\WINDOWS\system32\hp339D.tmp

Exit Explorer, but DO NOT REBOOT.

Next: While remaining in SAFE MODE:

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen. Your desktop and icons will disappear and then reappear again — this is normal.
Wait for the tool to complete and Disk Cleanup to finish — this may take a while; please be patient.

Next, run Ad-aware and perform a full scan. Remove everything found.

Now open Ewido Anti - Malware
      • Click on Scanner
      • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
      • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives. You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one. If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
      • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
      • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
      • Save the report to your desktop
      • Close Ewido
Next go to Start -> Control Panel, click Display -> Desktop -> Customize Desktop -> Web -> Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Restart your computer in normal mode.

Run the Panda online virus scan at http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm

      - Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
      - A new window will open…click the Check Now button
      - Enter your Country
      - Enter your State/Province
      - Enter your e-mail address and click send
      - Select either Home User or Company
      - Click the big Scan Now button
      - If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
      - It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
      - When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
      - When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.

Finally, restart your computer once more, and please post a new HijackThis log as well as the log from the Ewido scan and the log from the smitRem tool, which will be located at C:\smitfiles.txt.

Let us know if any problems persist.

Please use the [external image: Posted Image] button to reply.
Piatin,
Thanks sooo much for your assistance. :) The Ewido scan took the longest. About 3.5 hrs.
I am uploading what I think are the files you wanted. Let me know if these are the correct ones. Again thank you very much.

Hi dadeo58:

It appears that you have the newer variant of Smitfraud, which reqires an updated fix.
Please delete the version of SmitRem that you have, before proceeding.
We wouldn't want to get the two mixed.

Also, please be sure to use OPTION #1 ONLY, with the file you are to download. This will not fix the virus, but will allow us to be sure it is still on your PC, so we can safely provide the proper fix.

Then, please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).

Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply, along with a fresh Hijack This log.

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Hi dadeo58:

Please print, or copy and paste this text into a Notepad file and place it on your desktop, to review as you work, in order to reduce errors.
Please proceed with this, in the order which it is presented below.

It is important not to delay any longer than absolutely necessary.

The two logs you posted seem to show opposing results. The latest Hijack This log does not seem to have the Smitfraud virus present, but the Smitfraud fix does show its presence.
This Virus is changing very rapidly. It has changed many times, since my last post to you. The Smitfraud fix has also been revised many times, to allow for finding and removing the virus.
We must be positive that the virus is still present, before proceeding with the smitfraud fix, in order to prevent complications.

You look to be using two Anti-Virus Programs, Nortons and AVG. Doing so can cause conflicts between the two and lead to providing your PC with less effective protection. If you intend to keep Nortons programs, then AVG should be Uninstalled in Control Panel–>Add/Remove Programs. Be sure to update Nortons, without delay and be sure it is set to load at boot time.

There is also additional Malware on your PC and should be removed, before proceeding, so we will do that first.

Go to Control Panel–>Add/Remove Programs and Uninstall/Remove the following, if present.

sidesearch
begin2search

I see your Sun Java needs to be updated.

It is important to remove older versions as these are the ones with the holes in them. First, remove Sun Java from Add/Remove Programs, then
Download the Newest Version>>>> http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp

Once installed, it is very important to test and see that it is in fact installed >>>> Use this link. Sun Java Test

Next:
Please run at least two of the following online Virus scanners and let them remove anything they find.

When using Trend Micro, be sure and put a check in the box by "Auto Clean" before you do the scan. If it finds anything that it cannot clean have it delete it or make a note of the file location, so you can delete it yourself.
TrendMicro HouseCall
http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner
http://www.kaspersky.co.uk/news.html?id=146100010
Bitdefender and let it delete everything it finds.
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan

Note any thing that can't be fixed and Reboot, when done.

Next:
Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Disable Ewido:
Please disable Ewido, as it may interfere with the fix. To disable Ewido:
From the system tray:
  • Right-click the system tray icon and uncheck real time protection.
    or From within Ewido -
  • Under 'Your security status', if the real time protection is active, deactivate it by clicking 'real time protection' until the status says 'inactive'.
Once your log is clean you can re-enable Ewido.

Close all Windows and browsers, leaving only HijackThis running.

Place a check against each of the following.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,SearchURL = http://www.begin2search.com/sidesearch.html
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\WINDOWS\about.htm

Then, click on FIX CHECKED

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders shown DARK and delete them:

C:\WINDOWS\about.htm

Exit Explorer, enable hidden files and reboot as normal.

Your copy of Ewido looks to be outdated. Please Uninstall Ewido in Control Panel–Add/Remove programs.

Next:

Please download, install, and update the free version of Ewido Anti-Malware:
  • Please do update the program, before using.
Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".

    Then, return to Ewido.
  • Click on Scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. You can select "clean" and check the boxes "Perform action with all infections" and "Create encrypted backup" before clicking on OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop
  • Close Ewido
Please save the Ewido report, to be posted here later.

If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.
Ewido manual updates

The trial version of Ewido works like a full featured version for 14 days, after that the only features that will not work are, autoupdate and realtime protection. It will still be able to be updated with the link above and be used to scan and remove undesirables.

Then, please reboot into Normal Mode.

Next:

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/proc…processutil.htm

Then, please run Hijack This again. Scan and copy the log and post it into this topic, along with the Ewido report and the SmitfraudFix report.

Please use the [external image: Posted Image] button to reply.

Dadeo58
Hi dadeo58:

This should take care of the problem, finally.

Please print, or copy and paste this text into a Notepad file and place it on your desktop, to review as you work. Please read this text carefully before beginning, so you will know what to expect.

There have been additional changes in the Smitfraud fix. Two important updates since you last downloaded it. Please delete the version you are now using and download the latest version, from here:
Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Check to be sure it is Version 2.47, DO NOT run it yet

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Disable Ewido:
Please disable Ewido, as it may interfere with the fix.[br]To disable Ewido:
From the system tray:
  • Right-click the system tray icon and uncheck real time protection.
    or From within Ewido -
  • Under 'Your security status', if the real time protection is active, deactivate it by clicking 'real time protection' until the status says 'inactive'.
Once your log is clean you can re-enable Ewido.
Close all Windows and browsers, leaving only HijackThis running.

Place a check against each of the following.

F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\Userinit.exe

Then, click on FIX CHECKED

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders shown DARK and delete them:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\Userinit.exe Be sure you ARE NOT in System32.

Exit Explorer, enable hidden files and reboot as normal.

If you were unable to find, or delete any of the files then please follow these additional instructions:
Download Pocket Killbox and unzip it; save it to your Desktop.
Run it, and click the radio button that says Delete a file on reboot. For each of the files you could not delete, paste them one at a time into the full path of file to delete box and click the red circle with a white cross in it.
The program will ask you if you want to reboot; say No each time until the last one has been pasted in whereupon you should answer Yes.
Let the system reboot.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process. A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

After SmitfraudFix finishes (and after a reboot if required), please open Ewido. (If a reboot is required, please boot BACK into Safe Mode.)
Then please reboot into Normal Windows. Please post the contents of the SmitfraudFix log located at C:\rapport.txt into this thread, along with the Ewido report and a new HijackThis log.

Please advise if any problems remain.

Please use the [external image: Posted Image] button to reply.
Piatin,
Hope this is it.

Hi dadeo58, you're welcome.

I would suggest that AVG7 be uninstalled, in Add/Remove Programs.
You are already using Nortons Anti-Virus and using more than one can create conflicts and other problems between the two AVs, which can actually reduce the amount of protection you are getting.

I'm sure you are ready to be rid of Smitfraud, and it looks to be gone.
Thanks for being so patient and sticking with this to the finish.

Your HJT log also looks to be clean. Ewido only found a few cookies and cleaned them up nicely.
If there are no problems, I suggest the following.

One of the best features of Windows XP is the System Restore option, however if Malware infects a computer with this operating system the Malware can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after a virus removal.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

Download the new Ad-Aware SE version, and follow the instructions on how to do a full scan: http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?showtopic=11150
-reboot after using Ad-Aware SE. Also while there get the VX2 plugin and follow the instructions to run it also.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
I also suggest that you delete any files from "temp", "tmp" folders. In Internet Explorer, click on "Tools" => "Internet Options" => "Delete Files" and select the box that says "Delete All Offline Content" and click on "OK" twice. Also, empty the recycle bin by right clicking on it and selecting "Empty Recycle Bin". These steps should be done on a regular basis.

So how did I get infected in the first place?
