"Virus Alert!" in system tray: yet another case.

Hey guys,

Unfortunately like many other people I seem to have been infected by that dreaded "Virus Alert!" icon in the system tray.

In case the kind soul about to help me out is unfamiliar with it, it's a flashing icon in the sytem tray which changes from a green handicap symbol to a red "no smoking" looking symbol. Every so often a popup will appear from the system tray which tells me that "Your computer is infected!" along with some bull about downloading the latest programs to get rid of it.

Also, there's a strange symptom which I haven't noticed anyone else's posts making reference to: Generally when I try to run a program/open My Computer etc, the Windows Installer windows pops up and attempts to install Adobe Acrobat 7 (which has already been installed on my computer.) I cancel it several times, and it goes away and lets my application start up.

PS - I installed spyware doctor to get rid of the infection. It didn't work. I'm intending to get rid of it when this is all over.
Hello grumpsta,

It is important you don't miss a step and perform everything in the right order!!

1. Open HijackThis, click 'Config' (bottom right)
Choose the tab 'misc Tools' on top.
Choose 'delete a file on reboot'
In the field, copy and paste next:C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\wintxs32.dll
Click open.
Hijackthis will tell you that this file will be deleted on next reboot and if you want to reboot now. Click Yes/OK
Your system should reboot now.

2. Download roguescanfix.exe to your desktop.
Doubleclick roguescanfix.exe to install.
This will create a new folder on your desktop called roguescanfix.
Do not use this yet!

3. Run HijackThis and check the following entry:O2 - BHO: Nothing - {b0398eca-0bcd-4645-8261-5e9dc70248d0} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\hpCCE0.tmp
O20 - Winlogon Notify: wintxs32 - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\wintxs32.dll

Close all open windows EXCEPT HIJACKTHIS and click Fix Checked. Close HijackThis.

4. Clean your Cache and Cookies in IE:
  • Close all instances of Outlook Express and Internet Explorer
  • Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab
  • Click the "Delete Cookies" button
  • Next to it, Click the "Delete Files" button
  • When prompted, place a check in: "Delete all offline content", click OK
* Clean your Cache and Cookies in Firefox (In case you also have Firefox installed):
  • Go to Tools > Options.
  • Click Privacy in the menu on the left side of the Options window.
  • Click the Clear button located to the right of each option (History, Cookies, Cache).
  • Click OK to close the Options window
Alternatively, you can clear all information stored while browsing by clicking Clear All.
A confirmation dialog box will be shown before clearing the information.
* Clean other Temporary files + Recycle bin
  • Go to start > run and type: cleanmgr and click ok.
  • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
  • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
  • Press OK to remove them.
5. Open the roguescanfix folder and click: Run.bat
This tool needs internet connection so it can download an additional file to let the tool work properly.
If your firewall gives an alert, allow it instead of blocking it.
Let the tool perform its job.
The icons will disappear temporarely from your desktop, and reappear. This is normal.
Wait until the message Completed script execution is displayed, and click OK.
Click Exit to close down bfu.
Finally: click OK to start the Spyfalcon and/or Spywarequake uninstaller (if an unistaller is still found), and click uninstall.
WARNING: You will be asked to reboot your computer. Wait until the uninstallers did their job before clicking YES.

6. Please run an onlinescan with panda: (please use this scanner instead of any other scanner!)
Panda Online
- Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
- A new window will open…click the Check Now button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your e-mail address and click send
- Select either Home User or Company
- Click the big Scan Now button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
- When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
- When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.

7. Post the contents of the Panda scan report (or the Bitdefender log) in your next reply along with a new HijackThis Log,
by using Add Reply.

Greetings,
Thunder
Dear Thunder,

Thanks so much for the info. I followed your instructions as stated.

Prior to running Panda's scan the icon in the taskbar had disappeared. The Windows Installer (Adobe Acrobat) problem remained.

After running the panda scan about 77 problems were found. I consequently installed a copy of panda, did a scan and fix, ran the panda online scan again, and everything is fine in that respect.

However, the Windows Installer problem remains still. Could it be that in removing viruses/spyware etc the programs I ran also removed some aspect of Acrobat which now really does need to be reinstalled?

Here's the HT log now. Panda Scan is fine. 020 - WinLogon is still there?!

And thankyou again Thunder.

Hello Grumpsta,

Your log looks nearly clean now. ;)

You can fix this entry using HijackThis : O2 - BHO: (no name) - {b0398eca-0bcd-4645-8261-5e9dc70248d0} - (no file)
Concering that O20 : O20 - Winlogon Notify: avldr - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\avldr.dll is legitimate,
and was created by Panda Titanium 2006 Antivirus, so that's fine too.

It does appear Acrobat may have been damaged, especially the toolbar links,
not by the tools used, but by the malware that among other things deletes all other browser helper objects.
Reinstalling Acrobat (remove through Control Panel > Software) might probably be the best option here.

Are you experiencing any other problems?
Greetings,
Thunder
Hello again Thunder,

Ok, it's quite strange but when I went back into HijackThis and did a new scan, that particular 02 - BHO line was already gone.

Then, I reinstalled Acrobat and the problem of the installer popping up disappeared.

However, when I ran HijackThis again, my log had a new 02 - BHO line associated with Acrobat, is that ok?

Here's the newest (and perhaps final?) log. :)

Hello Grumsta,

That's exactly as it should be. ;)

The BHO for Acrobat has been rebuild.

—————–

Below I have included some recommendations on how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously ; these few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems.

1. Please navigate to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ on a regular basis and download all the "critical updates" for Windows, including the latest version of Internet Explorer.
This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer.

2. In order to protect yourself better against spyware, you have to make sure to keep your antispyware programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

3. Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is very good and more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has a built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) . If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

Please also read Tony Klein's excellent article: How I got Infected in the First Place
Hopefully this should take care of your problems!

Greetings,
Thunder
Hey Thunder, Just wanted to say thanks one last time for all the help. As for the tips, I always thought I was a pretty safe surfer. Had Norton Internet Security up and running, regularly updated and scanning, and had a hardware firewall too. I also use Firefox fairly often too, but I guess I should make it my default browser. But will definitely keep my windows updates coming now! Good on ya thunder, really appreciate it!
