Below is my log from HijackThis. This is my first time using this program, so I'm looking for some advice as to what I should do from here.

Here is a brief description of the problems that I have encountered lately:

In the past several weeks my computer has been running very slowly. I had not run my clean up programs for a while, so I decided to do this. I cleaned up many of the problems using Adaware, XoftSpy, and SpyBot S&D. However, I have found piece of spyware which I am unable to remove. The problem, I believe, has to do with adware.purityscan. I ran my Symantec Antivirus Full System Scan and found found 371 threats. One of these was a .dll file. The other 370 turned out to be .qsp files (I have never heard of these, nor can I find any information on these). All the files were associated with adware.purityscan. I have followed instructions from Symantec and from McAfee to try to remove it (using scans and looking for it in the registry), but I have not had any success. Another thing I noticed is that the popups that I often get on my computer are from Outerinfo, so I tried looking it up and removing it from the registry. Again, I found nothing in the registry.

I hope this little bit of background helps. Please let me know if there is any other information necessary.

Thanks

Welcome to the forum.

I don't see any signs of PurityScan or OuterInfo in your log, did you happen to download and run PurityScan in the past?

Here's the fix for it though.......

Look in your control panels add/remove programs for PuritySCAN By OIN, OuterInfo, OIN or similar , click on it and click remove.
Reboot and delete this folder if found:
C:\Program Files\PurityScan

If not listed download and run this uninstaller:
http://www.outerinfo...Uninstaller.exe

Tutorial for the uninstaller if needed

Reboot when done and delete this folder if found:
C:\Program Files\PurityScan

Then..........

Open Windows Explorer & Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked.
Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and untick "hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
Click "Apply" then "OK"

Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Make sure this file is gone:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\tzbmiojj.dll

Reboot and post back a fresh HijackThis log and we will take another look, MrC

I've followed your steps and tried to find any signs of the spyware. But like you had said, it doesn't appear to be there. I think one of the scans that I ran before I used HijackThis may have actually caught it. However, my computer was still having problems (it was responding very slowly).

So after looking for the files I went ahead and closed everything and ran HijackThis once more. I fixed the 11 files that you suggested, ran it again, and save the log. Immediately after fixing them I opened my internet browser and noticed a huge difference in the response time. Before it took 10 seconds for the window to open and fully display the homepage. This time it responded immediately (within a second - like it should with 1GB of RAM). I just hope it remains that way.

Here is the latest log for HijackThis. Let me know if you see any other problems.

Looks OK

If you have any questions - please post back

I'll leave you with........

Some preventive maintenance:

------------------Must have or do:-----------------

Now that you're clean: <----Important Step!!!!
Delete your system restore files and create a new restore point:
(ME and XP users only)

XP system restore

ME system restore

Visit Windows Update and install all the lastest critical updates.

Install these two free programs, they sit in the backround and protect your system from spy and adware being installed on your system, also from your browser being hijacked.

SpywareBlaster Check for updates weekly.

SpywareGuard

Don't open e-mail attachments without first scanning them with an up-to-date
anti virus program, even after doing that I would be very careful. Don't click on any executables in e-mails or any other links that you're not sure of.
Watch your surfing habits, don't click on or download anything you're not sure of. Don't install a program that hasn't been recommended by a reputable organization.
