Major problem with the purityscan + svchost.exe. I tried everything (spybot, spyware doctor, symantec, adaware). I deleted all the infections I had except adware.purityscan because it won't let me! I can't quarantine it either. It's slowing my computer up and I can't even use my computer in normal mode so I'm really frustrated. Please help! I'm currently using safe mode to do this. Here's my hijack log!

MUCH APPRECIATED!!!
Nortina, :)

Welcome to the forum, my name is Ken and I will be helping you clean up your computer. Your running an outdated version of HJT that may not be showing everything so I need you to upgrade it, we can do that in a bit since your having problems in normal windows.

Your infected with the Vundo Trojan :smack: and also since you posted your log in Safemode, then again it won't show everything.

Do this first

Disable the TeaTimer, you can re enable it when were done if you wish

  • Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
  • If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
  • On the left hand side, Click on Tools
  • Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
  • Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
  • Restart your computer. <– Important

Download VundoFix to your desktop

  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log in a reply to this thread.

Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop. <– Important
  • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post the Combofix log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

When your done running these programs, try booting into Normal windows

Uninstall your copy of HJT and download and install the latest version by Trendmicro.

Download Trendmicros Hijackthis to your desktop.
  • Double click it to install
  • Follow the prompts and by default it will install in C:\Program Files\Trendmicro\Hijackthis\Highjackthis.exe
  • Open HJT Scan and Save a Log File, it will open in Notepad
  • Go to Format and make sure Wordwrap is Unchecked
  • Go to Edit> Select All/Edit > Copy and Paste the new log into this thread
DO NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Post the two reports and a new HJT log from Trendmicro

Hello,

HijackThis v1.99.1 <– Uninstall this via the Add Remove Programs in the Control Panel , there is no need for it anymore

Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows including this one, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…rch/search.html
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Olrshj] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\??crosoft.NET\d?dplay.exe"
O20 - Winlogon Notify: qomjjkk - qomjjkk.dll (file missing)

Run Super Anti Spyware, its a great program for rooting out anything thats left over. Be sure to download the free version.

Please download SuperAntiSpyware
Install the program
  • Run SuperAntiSpyware and click: Check for updates
  • Once the update is finished, on the main screen, click: Scan your computer
  • Check: Perform Complete Scan
  • Click Next to start the scan.
Superantispyware scans the computer, and when finished, lists all the infections found.
Make sure everything found has a check next to it, and press: Next
Then, click Finish

It is possible that the program asks to reboot in order to delete some files.

Obtain the SuperAntiSpyware log as follows:
  • Click: Preferences
  • Click the Statistics/Logs tab
  • Under Scanner Logs, double-click SuperAntiSpyware Scan Log
It opens in your default text editor (such as Notepad)

Please provide the SuperAntiSpyware log in your reply, as well as a new HijackThis log.

Post the SAS log and a New HJT log please and let me know how your system is running ??
Hi Ken, I don't see the Hijackthis 1.99 version, I only see the 2.0.2 version of Hijack this… should I still remove that one? and if I do, how would I scan again? Should I install a new one??? Thanks :smack:

Hi Ken! Everything is running great, except last night symantec detected another threat. I think it's similar to what I had before but they are both quarantined. Apparantly it's in C:\Windows\servicePackfiles\i386\svchost.exe and C:\windows\i386\svchost.ex I quarantined both of them successfully but can't delete them for some reason. Any thoughts on what to do next? Are they just the variants leftover from my vundo? Or…am I just unlucky? hahaha Also, with spyware doctor, I detected Trojan-PWS tanspy in which I already just removed. And Spybot detected Virtumonde again and clickspring!
Hello,

C:\Windows\servicePackfiles\i386\svchost.exe
C:\windows\i386\svchost.exe

One is a prefetch and the others are backups. Deleting the prefetch will
only cause it to reappear and deleting the others will result in a lack of
having a back-up copy.

As far as the other threats, can you tell me where Spybot is finding them, they may just be in System Restore or a backup folder.

Do this.
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

    • [external image: Posted Image]

  • When shown the disclaimer, Select "2"

The above procedure will:
  • Delete the following:
    • ComboFix and its associated files and folders.
    • VundoFix backups, if present
    • The C:\Deckard folder, if present
    • The C:_OtMoveIt folder, if present
  • Reset the clock settings.
  • Hide file extensions, if required.
  • Hide System/Hidden files, if required.
  • Reset System Restore.

Then flush your System Restore….I can't stress enough how important it is to create a new Restore Point.

System Restore makes regular backups of all your settings, if you ever had to use this program to restore your system to a previous date, you will be infected all over again so we need to clean out the previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore.

  • Right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot your computer

Turn ON System Restore.

  • Right-click My Computer.
  • ClickProperties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • UN-Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.

Create a new Restore Point <– Very Important

  • Go to Start/ Control Panel/ Performance and Maintenance/ System Restore/ Create a New Restore Point
You need to go into the Control Panel and switch to Catagory View to be able to Create a New Restore Point

Then run Spybot again and see if anything comes up.
It's really peculiar because it says that my combofix is uninstalled and after when I tried typing in combofix again, i jut said I didn't type it in correctly, although I did exactly as you told me. The stuff spybot found was in [clickspring]HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-3419555109-4067063202-810483282-1006\Software\Mozilla\Firefox\Extensions\{59A40AC9-E67D-4155-B31D-4B7330FCD2D6} [Virtumonde]HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-3419555109-4067063202-810483282-1006\Software\Microsoft\aldd HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-3419555109-4067063202-810483282-1006\Software\Microsoft\rdfa
Instead of typing it in , copy and paste this in Combofix /u then hit OK.

What Spybot is finding are leftover registry entries , all the files for these infections are gone. When you run Spybot, are you having them clean them….if not do so, reboot and run Spybot again until there gone.

You can also run Ad-Aware SE from LavaSoft, make sure you have it remove what it finds.

Ken
That's what I did, I copied and pasted them, same thing happened :( When I searched for combofix (since I couldn't run it) , what's left is the combofix log and the prefetch file.
