Hello good people, I was wondering if you could be kind enough to view my log and see if you can find any problems or soon to be problems. I have been experiencing a few irritating issues and am afraid I might have deeper issues. I have Norton running and updated but havn't run it in a couple weeks. I wanted to get some advice from this site first before I did anything. I am a novice and know only how to play my tunes and surf for whacky pictures (not really but close enough). The problems I have noticed are pop ups overbearing my explorer page and by closing the pop up, the explorer page encounters a problem and needs to close. Also, the same pop ups seem to come while on certain pages, for instance a pop up for roulette will come while on a state lottery site but they don't seem to be connected. There are programs in my programs list that I have not downloaded myself with titles such as "nocreditcardneeded" , "vizitus", "emoticons" and "sex streams". I thought Norton was enough for coverage but obviously not. I was wondering if someone could look at things and advise me on further protection and what my log is looking like. Mnay thanks in advance.

The problems that I am aware of are as follows:

-unwanted annoying frequent popups including but not limited to products-news.com, traffic-waypoint-cash.com, the best-promos.com (95 percent of them being porn). are there no porn sites that don'y screw you somehow?

-Circles with e's in them appear on the desktop ofcourse without permission along with other intruders such as vizitus and emoticons;etc..

-Toast.net (our current ISP bumps offline up to a few times during a regular use (typical of Toast?)

-c:\windows\system\32\clehsv.exe clehsv attempts to change registry upon start up according to spybot (I allow change, not knowing what or who it is)

-Adware notices infection Navipromo 4 or 5 times which I attempt to clean.
file: msclock32
path: c:windows\system32
infection: adware.navipromo

-Spybot's window that pops up asking to allow or deny change seems to be distorted. It is cut through the two buttos of choice (still operatable but odd i thought) and I cannot enlarge window top to bottom to fix, it only lets me stretch the window side to side which has no effect.

-The computer seems to be a little to slow. It seems to running harder than it should at times.

-There are pop ups that match the characteristics of a site that I go to. For example if I go to my local lottery site, a gambling popup will show, or if I go to Craigslist a personals one will show. They are not affiliated with eachother so does that mean I have intelligently stubborn to remove spyware? I think it must.

I now have Spybot s+d, ewido, spyware blaster, norton, hjt and Ad aware SE that I know of. Are these good? Are they enough? I have no idea what to run, how often to run them, what settings to put them at, if they interfere with eachother or what I'm havin for dinner. I wonder which programs to run all the time in the background and which to only call upon. I'm sure that there is problems behind the scenes that I am not aware of but the ones that I am aware of are really annoying. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks in advance.
Hi trick78;

You did well to run Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D and Ewido, all freshly updated.
I would have advised to do so, if you had not already. There is still evidence of quite a lot of Malware, especially dialers, which can cause a lot of problems for those that are using a dial up ISP. Not so much for those on DSL or Cable. Not very good to have them hanging around though.
None of the programs you mention having will conflict with each other. I'll be suggesting additional free programs to protect your PC, as soon as we are sure it is clean.

Your copy of HijackThis needs to be in a folder of it's own. When HJT fixes anything, it makes backups of the original files in the folder it is in. For this reason it cannot be run from a Zip file or from Temporary folders because the backups will be deleted. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!

1. Please go to you're 'My Documents' folder, right-click and select 'New > Folder' then name the folder 'HJT'.

2. Copy and paste HijackThis.exe to the new folder.

Spybots TeaTimer is running. Tea Timer will do it's job and will resist any changes we try to make to your system so just for now could you disable it. When we have finished the fix then re-enable it.

Open Spybot, go to Mode > Advanced. Then click on Tools. In the menu on the left hand side you will see Resident, click that and then untick 'Resident "Teatimer" (Protection of over all system settings) active.
Remember to reverse the procedure and turn it back on, after finishing.

Next:
Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Close all Windows and browsers, leaving only HijackThis running.

The following are recommended fixes:

Optional - Hewlett-Packard Backweb I also recommend optionally checking the following. Although many legitimate companies use Backweb to check for program updates, it has been used for malicious purposes by others. Based upon HP's own description "With the My HP Center, consumers have access directly from the desktop to Internet sites featuring special offers for HP customers ranging from personal finance and shopping to digital imaging and music", this seems to qualify as adware:

O4 - Global Startup: Updates from HP.lnk = C:\Program Files\Updates from HP\137903\Program\BackWeb-137903.exe

Click on Fix Checked when finished.

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders shown DARK and delete them:
C:\documents and settings\owner\local settings\temp\Ziphq.exe
c:\windows\system32\clehsv.exe clehsv
C:\Program Files\Updates from HP\137903\Program\BackWeb-137903.exe

Reboot , enable hidden files and post a fresh Hijack This log in this topic.

Please let me know if there are continuing problems.

Please use the Add Reply feature to reply, so I will be notified.

Note: Please do not edit the new HJT log. We need to see the entire log, without revisions.
Howdy Piatan,
Thanks a bunch for the fast reply. I followed your directions and sucessfully checked and fixed all the HJT titles you listed. I then rebooted in safe mode for the search of the three folders\files you listed. I couldn't confidently find them.

The first: C:documenst and settings\owner\local settings\temp\Ziphq.exe I could not find listed at all.

The second: C:windows\system32\clehsv.exe clehsv I found four listed with similiar titles. Three had a windows media player icon on them and one looked like a computer or something. They were titled as clehsv (wmp), clehsv (computer), clehsv_nav (wmp), clehsv navps (wmp). I did not see one titled exactly as the one in your directions so i didn't do anything with them. I wasn't sure if i should of deleted them all or just one.

The third: C:Program files\updates from hp\137903\program\backweb-137903.exe I found one titled backweb-137903 but it had no exe after it so again I passed on deleting that one too for nnot knowing for sure.

Maybe if I could decipher between what exe is and a plate of grits I would be all set, sorry about that but probably better to be safer than sorry as they say ( I didn't feel like proving that one).

Does HJT automatically store a back-up of the fixes or is that something I have to initiate? I havn't reenabled spybots teatimer yet, not sure if that matters. I havn't noticed any additional problems. Are the HJT items we fixed what you call the malware? Is it those that cause those annoying popups? Toast just kicked me off again, have you heard off anything identifying the quality of that service? So… how's it lookin to ya? I appreciate greatly your help and advice. The new HJT log is as follows:

Hi trick78

Toast ! Now that's some name for an ISP.
As I recall, my dialup was constantly kicking me off. Seems like it always knew when I was right in the middle of something. Since Toast is in New England and I'm in the SouthWest, I wouldn't know about the quality of Toast. Ask me about sourdough biscuits and I'm your man. ;)

Since you are on a dialup ISP and there were dialers (Malware) present, it would be a good idea to watch your long distance charges, to be sure you aren't being charged for calls you didn't make. A call to the phone company could save you a lot of grief.

It does sound like your copy of Spybot S&D has a problem. Might be a good idea to Uninstall it in Add/Remove Programs and download a fresh copy. There's a link for it farther down in this text.

You're right, it's much better to be safe than sorry when deleting files.
Hijack This does make backups, with no input necessary from you.
However, when you delete a file you're not using HJT, so no backups are made, unless you have backed it up yourself.

Your Hijack this log looks to be clean. If there are no continuing problems and the popups have stopped, I would suggest the following.

One of the best features of Windows XP is the System Restore option, however if Malware infects a computer with this operating system the Malware can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after a virus removal.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

Download the new Ad-Aware SE version, and follow the instructions on how to do a full scan: http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?showtopic=11150
-reboot after using Ad-Aware SE. Also while there get the VX2 plugin and follow the instructions to run it also.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
I also suggest that you delete any files from "temp", "tmp" folders. In Internet Explorer, click on "Tools" => "Internet Options" => "Delete Files" and select the box that says "Delete All Offline Content" and click on "OK" twice. Also, empty the recycle bin by right clicking on it and selecting "Empty Recycle Bin". These steps should be done on a regular basis.

So how did I get infected in the first place?
