Hi,

My OS is Windows XP and I run Mozilla Firefox & Thunderbird. About a week ago Norton popped up that it had detected a virus, each time this happened I had to close 4 or 5 windows for detected blaster worms and trojans. The source of the files it detected were in Docs & Settings\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files. My system appeared to be running OK though so I didn't worry too much. The same thing happened tonight so I ran WinCleaner & Adaware & all Norton clean-up programs. I also did a live update with Norton & a full system scan which turned out clear. The problem I am now experiencing is pop-ups telling me I may have spyware installed and to click OK to find how to eradicate, if I click cancel or X then it takes me to a page offering links to sites that offer spyware removal software - I close this page immediately. I was infected with heretofind a few months ago and I thought I had got rid of that - but I didn't know what I was doing then & still don't know now so any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!! My hijackthis log is shown below (following reboot after running norton & adaware).

Steve

Click here to download DllCompare. Start the Program with and click the Run Locate.com - be sure the \Windows\System32 directory is in the box and wait until the the blue text says it has 'completed the scan'.

Click the Compare button to start the next process. The results appear in two panes - files in the upper pane have been verified to 'exist', files in the lower pane were 'not able to be accessed'. Very few files should be listed in the lower pane when the Compare scan is complete. Click on each of the listed entries in the lower pane to select them. Right-click on the file and use the option Rescan. This will cause Windows Find to see if the file does exist, and then if so it will be removed from the list to reduce the number of identified files.

Click the Make a Log of what was found button and post the log here in this thread and wait for further instructions.
Daemon, Many thanks for your reply, I have downloaded DllCompare but upon clicking Run Locate.com I encounter the following error message… 16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem C:\DOCUME~1\Steve\Desktop\locate.com C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose ‘Close’ to terminate the application. Upon clicking ‘ignore’ it says scan complete but doesn’t show any results or allow me to continue with ‘compare’ Any further advice would be most appreciated, Steve
Hi, Completed the above, please find log below… * DLLCompare Log version(1.0.0.125) Files Found that Windows does not See or cannot Access *Not everything listed here means you are infected! ________________________________________________ C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ntimpeg2.dll Fri 2 Apr 2004 18:52:16 …HR 1,024 1.00 K ________________________________________________ 1,231 items found: 1,231 files (2 H/S), 0 directories. Download FxAgentB.exe from here and save it to your desktop. After downloading, double-click the FxAgentB file to run it and the program will scan your entire hard drive - this may take a while. When it is done, it will generate a log file called FxAgentB.log - save that information as you will need to paste it here later. Reboot when done.

Next click here to download CWShredder by Merijn Bellekom and run it, hit 'fix' as opposed to 'scan only'. If you already have CWShredder, click 'Check for update' and make sure you are running version 1.59.1. Reboot when done.

Then click here to download Ad-Aware SE and install. Before scanning click on "check for updates now" to make sure you have the latest reference file. Click "Start", select "Perform Full System scan" and "Next" to start the scan. When the scan is finished, the screen will tell you if anything has been found, click "Next". The bad files will be listed, right click the pane and click "Select all objects" - this will put a check mark in the box at the side, click "Next" again and click "OK" at the prompt "# objects will be removed. Continue?".

Reboot when done.

Click here to download CWShredder and run it, hit 'fix' as opposed to 'scan only'. Reboot when done.

Click here to download Spybot Search & Destroy - install, update, scan and fix all RED items it finds. Reboot when done.

Rescan with HJT and post a new log here so that any remnants can be removed manually.
Downloaded and ran FxAgentB, I repeated this a few times but after every 4 mins or so of scanning I kept getting this error message…

Symantec Backdoor.Agent.B Removal Tool 1.0.1.2

Backdoor.Agent.B has not been found on your computer.

… I tried re-booting,dis-connecting from the net etc but still the same.

I proceeded with the rest of you instructions regardless of this…

Ran CWShredder and it removed CWS.HiddenDll then re-booted.

Ran Ad-Aware SE, 13 objects removed then re-booted.

Ran CWShredder again & nothing found this time.

Ran updated Spybot Search & Destroy, 7 problems found & fixed, then re-booted.

Re-scanned with HJT, new log as below…
