I'm running Windows xp home ed. I have visited windows update and kept up with all the updates. At this time I get an update failure for one update related to Office.

Nortons is in use for AV and firewall. I get frequent alert for port scans. I also ran a couple online scans which came up clean.

This computer is starting up so slow. I use IE 6.0 and when I open it it takes forever for a window to appear. Pages are running very slow and the browser freezes frequently.

I have updated and run both spybot and adaware and neither found anything threatening, a few tracking cookies. I also run Spywareblaster.

Here's my hjt log. I'm sure there is junk on there I don't want or need and things that need "fixing".
Thanks so much for your expertise and taking a look. I feel way over my head with this.

Hello Lee_, welcome to the forum.

Important: Do this before any fix.

Please put your HijackThis in it's own folder, (I create a new folder in C:\ named HJT).
You can do a Right Click on any open area on the desktop, New> Folder, then rename the folder HJT.

Go to where your HijackThis is and Right Click on HijackThis.exe, select Cut, then open the new folder you just created (HJT) Right Click in the folder and select paste.

The reason we do this is Hijackthis creates backup files just in case you'd need to restore one and we'll be cleaning out the temp files.

After the above:

I suggest you do this:

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://ie.redirect.h...ario&pf=desktop

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://ie.redirect.h...ario&pf=desktop

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://ie.redirect.h...ario&pf=desktop

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://ie.redirect.h...ario&pf=desktop

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://ie.redirect.h...ario&pf=desktop

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://ie.redirect.h...ario&pf=desktop

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://ie.redirect.h...ario&pf=desktop

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Delete these Files if listed:
C:\WINDOWS\ALCXMNTR.EXE

1. Open My Computer
2. Right click on your hard drive that you wish to clean (C drive, for example)
3. In the context menu that opens, select properties
4. Under the general tab you should select Disk Cleanup
5. Windows will scan your drive which will take a few seconds/minutes
6. A box will display the various files you can remove.
Check all boxes except compress old files (If listed)
7. Click OK and windows will comply.

Restart your computer.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

You also need to update your Java:

Thanks for the welcome, it's been a great learning experience reading the boards here.

I followed your directions, all I have left to do is go update my java.

No freeze ups but I only have been on long enough to do this latest scan and post this log.
Maybe I'm just asking this machine to do too much with both xp and nortons, it only has the 256 RAM it came out of the box with. I disabled a few things from start up a day or so ago (like adobe and realplayer) but haven't seen any improvement in page loading.

Here's my new log and thanks again for all the help.

lets see if this will help speed it up.

Backup your Registry...
- Press "CTRL - ALT - DEL" keys all at the same time to start "Task Manager"
- In the Task Manager window click on "File", then from the drop-down menu select "New Task (Run...)"
- In the "Create New Task" window enter\type "regedit" (without quotes)
- Once Regedit opens click on the FILE menu and select Export
- Save the file as backup. Save the file somewhere you will remember and not delete.
IMPORTANT: make sure to set the export range to ALL

I recommend you download RegSeeker. Extract it to it's own folder, open and double click RegSeeker.exe to start the program. Maximize the window and click clean registry. Check all sections and click OK. When the scan is complete, verify the backup box in lower left corner is checked and click the select all button, then select all again. Then right click within the search results and select delete. Run it again and again, deleting everything it finds until it finds nothing. Reboot and make sure your programs are working properly, control panel and add/remove programs windows open, etc (basically just do a quick check of everything). In the event anything was 'broken', you can open RegSeeker, click backups and double click any/all files to put the information back. A reboot may be required for the effects to be seen. Reboot When done.

Followed your directions to create my reg back up and then downloaded and ran regseeker. It took 4 run throught for the list to come up empty. Just back from rebooting and testing things out. Contol panel, add/remove, disk clean up all seem fine. My nortons, spywareblaster all came up too. One of the removed entries must have been to do with Office because at reboot I got a windows installation dialog box for Office set up so I let it run. It failed to install, was missing something called SKU112 CAB. I will work on sorting that out tommorow. I gave a quick look at my add/remove programs list and Office 2003 is listed there. I have the CD's and can always uninstall then reinstall it. Off to bed now. I can say perfomance seems swifter. Again thank you for the carefully explained directions, you made this pretty easy for me. Cheers.

Hi there! Well the PC seems much faster after fixing the things you suggested and running regseeker. A trip to Microsoft Office online to down load a recomemded update for Office seems to have fixed the problem at start up with Office trying and failing to install. A question for you about regseeker. How often should a program like that be run? I would assume not nearly as often as the once a week I try to run spybot and adaware but will it help my pc to run it periodically? Thanks again for the terrific instructions, links and problem solving.

That would depend on how many programs you un-install. I think once every couple months should work.

Good Job

Log looks good :D  How is it running any issues?

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Click Start> My Computer, select the Tools menu and then Folder Options, after the new window appears select the View tab…]
This time select the: Restore Defaults
Select: Apply, and click OK

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Safe Surfing. :D

A little light bulb went on when you mentioned running Reg Seeker would depend on how often and how many programs I've uninstalled. It's basically clearing out junk left behind after an update or uninstall, right? My system is running much quicker, IE hasn't hung up on me and I haven't run into any problems with any of the programs I've tried out. You listed steps for removing my previous restore points. Is that what I should do next since the machine seems fine after running RegSeeker? I do already have the updated SpywareBlaster but I will go add Spywareguard and IESPY AD. That is a great article too, now I understand the idea how those work as layers of protection. I have Nortons for AV and Firewall so I'm set in that department for now. Thanks again,

Yes.

Yes, you want a new clean Restore Point. If anything happens, you want that clean restore point to go back to.

Great. Those will help

Got my new restore point set and understand that if/when I run Regseeker I should always perform this step (once I am sure my system is stable and programs are all performing.) Spywareguard and IESPY AD are now installed along with what I already had in place. PC is running much better. Thanks again for taking the time to investigate my HJT log, walk me through all these steps and answer all my questions. It's been a great learning experience I can see where you earned your moniker "Forum God", you earned it. ^_^ Cheers, Lee
