IE Getting slower

I have been having the following problems which I can't seem to solve.
The pages on IE have slowed down also favourites seems to be dragging it's feet.
When I shut down I get something about winsupdater is trying to close, wait or end now. Since it does not close on it's own I have to end it.
Also Norton has blocked winlog.exe is this OK or should I enable traffic on it.

Looked up both files and get the impression they are malware of some sort but having used adaware se and spybot I don't seem to be able to fix it.

Have scanned with Norton AV, Stinger and Tinymicro all come up with zero infections.

I am attempting to add a HJT log to this in case anyone can see anything that will help me.

Sorry if this is not enough info I am new to forums.

Thanks

Oh and OS is Win XP pro

Greetings and welcome to TomCoyote.org!

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run Hijack This!
Click "Do a systen scan only".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winsupdater] C:\Program Files\winsupdater\winsupdater.exe /auto

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [] winlog.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [] winlog.exe

Then click "Fix checked" and close Hijack This!.

Reboot in "safe" mode.

Delete all of the following noted (in red) file(s)/FOLDER(s) you can find:

c:\program files\winsupdater <— FOLDER

c:\windows\system32\winlog.exe <— file
(Be sure the file you delete matches this name EXACTLY!!!)

Some malware files may be "hidden".
Be sure to show hidden files when looking for these file(s) and/or folder(s).

Reboot in normal mode and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread. :)
Thanks for helping Micah_6.8 it really is appreciated. :)

I have done as you said and updated HJT log is below.

One thing I didn't mention is that I could not open Taskman or regedit. Can open taskman now but regedit still only opens for 2 seconds.
Still I wouldn't know what I was doing in regedit anyway so I suppose it doesn't matter.

Thanks again

The log looks good

Can you access the "cmd" prompt:

Start –> Run

In the box type in cmd then hit (or click OK)

Does that work (bring up a DOS window)?

Copy the text in the following quote box into Notepad:

dir c:\WINDOWS\regedit.* /ah /s > files.txt
dir c:\WINDOWS\regedit.* /s >> files.txt
notepad files.txt

Save it to your desktop as ff.bat.

Close Notepad

Now, the ff.bat file on the desktop. A Notepad window will open up.

Please paste it's contents into your next post.

Go to:

Start –> Run

In the box type in c:\windows\regedit.exe then hit (or click OK)

Let me know if that gives you access to regedit.

If it does, we can "fix" it permanently, then we'll work on "cmd".

:)
Copy the text in the following quote box into Notepad:

ren C:\WINDOWS\system32\regedit.com C:\WINDOWS\system32\regedit.old
dir c:\WINDOWS\cmd.* /ah /s > files.txt
dir c:\WINDOWS\cmd.* /s >> files.txt
notepad files.txt

Save it to your desktop as ff.bat.

Close Notepad

Now, the ff.bat file on the desktop. A Notepad window will open up.

Please paste it's contents into your next post.

Now you should be able to do this successfully:

Start –> Run

In the box type in regedit then hit (or click OK)
Hi Micah-6:8 Still can't open regedit :( (Start, run, regedit enter) Is that right  a panel opens and closes after about 2 seconds. It does not look like the registry editor from c:\windows\regedit.exe we did previously, it looks more like a DOS window that opens and closes Have done the ff.bat thing, results as follows Volume in drive C has no label. Volume Serial Number is 4C58-E356 Directory of c:\WINDOWS\system32 24/09/2005 05:14 2 cmd.com 1 File(s) 2 bytes Total Files Listed: 1 File(s) 2 bytes 0 Dir(s) 104,529,399,808 bytes free Volume in drive C has no label. Thanks for spending so much time on this :)
Go to:

Start –> Run

In the box type in c:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe then hit (or click OK)

Does that bring up a DOS window?

Run Hijack This!.

Click on Open Misc Tools section

To the right of Generate Startuplist log, there are two boxes.

Check them both, then click Generate Startuplist log.

"Copy/paste" the startuplist log into this thread.
Hi Micah-6:8

Thanks again

Here is a test:

Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe

http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop.

l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing .

This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, Notepad will open with a log.

If you got an error when running that, run option #5 in l2mfix.bat. Then close l2mfix.bat.

Then try:

Start –> Run

In the box type in cmd then hit (or click OK)

And also:

Start –> Run

In the box type in regedit then hit (or click OK)

Let me know if those commands work now.
Hi Micah_6:8 Brilliant they both work now. :D Assuming that all my problems are fixed just like to thank you one more time. If there are any suggestions you can make to ensure better safety please let me know. Also I believe I should now close the post, if so how do I do that??
ALRIGHT!!!

I leave the "solved" threads open for about a week (in case you have problems you can come back and post again), then I close them.

Thnx for "sticking with me".
:)

Items you may wish to consider to harden your defenses against future infections:

Read "How did I get infected in the first place?"

Download/install IE-Spyad

IE-Spyad puts over 4000 known malicious web sites into IE's "restricted zone" to help prevent you from getting infected.

Check your browser settings at Qualsys.com

A series of "tests" (and suggested fixes) to help tweak IE's settings to help prevent infections when surfing the web.

Follow safe Internet practices:

1. Keep your virus definitions up to date, and scan your system regularly.

2. Don't open email, or download attachments from unrecognized email addresses.

3. Be careful when downloading email attachments, EVEN FROM PEOPLE YOU KNOW! Many virii, worms, and trojans infect a persons system then immeadiately spread themselves to the people in the infected persons addressbook via email attachments.

4. Be careful downloading files from the Internet. Scan all downloaded files with a reliable UP-TO-DATE antivirus program. Scan "zip" files BEFORE unzipping, and scan all unzipped files BEFORE USING THEM.

5. Keep your Windows and IE current with all the latest patches and updates.

 Best help I have ever had and I have learned something as well. :D Can you tell me how to make a donation, read Toms post about losing his home and although I would have made one anyway, thought I would make a larger one this time. After all if I had to get someone in to sort this out it would have cost me big time and I wouldn't have learned anything either. Micah_6:8 is the best. Thanks for all the help and your patience.
