a while back I got an msn messenger message from one of my contacts that said "is this you?" and had a link with my name in it. I clicked on it and norton antivirus warned there was a virus, and since then the site from the original link has been reset as the default home page in my browser whenever I restart my computer, and there have been all sorts of other issues that I will get into in a moment.
the web site for the original link was messengerfriends.net, and the hijacking site in my browser is messengersite.net.
when my computer starts up I always get an alert box with the following: "iyhpb" (in title bar), message: "runtime error 429. active x component cannot create object"
I cannot run regedit or msconfig, and norton antivirus thinks my subscription has expired and won't run. I can run hijack this only for a few seconds before it shuts down, so at least I can get a logfile if I am quick. I was also unable to access antivirus sites, the hijack this site, etc until after one of the anti spyware programs I ran eliminated the registry entry that wasn't allowing it. however, when I restart my computer it goes right back to preventingme access to those sites.
there is a second csrss.exe process running on my computer that is listed as an owner run process, but task manager will not let me terminate it. I tracked the files down to C:\WINDOWS\system32\xqitvei\csrss.exe, but the system will not allow me to delete them. initially they did not appear - my folder options are reset to hide system files and I have to reset it every time I go to a folder. but I typed the fle path in the address bar and got to the folder, but the files will not show no matter what I do. I know there are 3 files because I looked at the folder properties. they are listed as read-only and hidden, and changing folder properties doesn't make the files appear.
anyway, I've run ad aware (in fact, it was running when I got the virus, as was norton antivirus), spybot search and destroy, spy sweeper, mcafee free scan (when I was briefly able to access antivirus sites again for a time), and have gotten these results:
from mcafee:
C:\...\menu.jr-c78a21d-12e3ec8b.zip Exploit-ByteVerify (deleted the file)
C:\WINDOWS\...\etc\hosts.20051219-230603.backup Qhosts.apd (can't find/delete)
C:\WINDOWS\system32\xqitvei\smss.exe W32/Generic.e (can't delete)
from spy sweeper:
trojan backdoor secure-multi
other scans have shown tons of adware now on my system. here is my hijack this logfile:
