I'm not sure where I picked up what is wrong with my computer. Yesterday when I started up, I started getting pop-ups and the pages I was looking at were redirected to anti-virus sites. I am having problems signing in to certain sites and when I am able to log in, the page is usually redirected to some form of ad. My anti-virus software has detected Trojan horse downloaders, but I don't think anything has worked to remove them or fix the problem. I rebooted after my last virus scan and then ran Hijack This. This log was produced:

Any assistance would be more than appreciated.

Thanks.
Hi joydrop2405,

Your computer appears to have been infected by a backdoor trojan. These programs have the ability to steal passwords and other information from your system. If you use your computer for sensitive purposes such as internet banking then I recommend you take the following steps immediately:
  • Use another, uninfected computer to change all your internet passwords, especially ones with financial implications such as banks, paypal, ebay, etc. You should also change the passwords for any other site you use.
  • Call your bank(s), credit card company or any other institution which may be affected and advise them that your login/password or credit card information may have been stolen and ask what steps to take with regard to your account.
  • Consider what other private information could possibly have been taken from your computer and take appropriate steps
This infection can almost certainly be cleaned, but as the malware could be configured to run any program a remote attacker requires, it will be impossible to be 100% sure that the machine is clean, if this is unacceptable to you then you should consider reformatting the system partition and reinstalling Windows as this is the only 100% sure answer.

If you wish to reformat then please let me know in your next response, I'll now continue with instructions for cleaning.

It appears that you have two antivirus programs running - McAfee and AVG. Running one antivirus program is essential, but having two can cause conflicts, slow your system down and even cause stability problems, and will not improve your security. You should use just one antivirus program and use an online scanner like Kaspersky's to get a '2nd opinion'.

Before proceeding, please remove one of these programs.
If you have any problems, please stop and let me know before proceeding further.

Then, download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
Then, navigate to the HijackThis folder with Windows Explorer:
C:\Program Files\Hijackthis
Right-click the HijackThis program file HijackThis.exe and rename it to scan.exe
If you have a shortcut to HijackThis on your Desktop, it will no longer work, so please delete it and make a new one by right-clicking scan.exe and choosing Send To->Desktop (create shortcut)
Then make a new HijackThis log by running scan.exe

Once complete, please post the SDFix log and a new HijackThis log.
Thanks for everything so far. I did everything as you said and I still got a WinAntiVirusPro pop-up just now. I'm not sure if that means anything or not. I would like to put off reformatting if at all possible. Also, I removed McAfee. It was an expired trial version that came with the computer. Here are the newest logs:

Hi joydrop2405,

I still got a WinAntiVirusPro pop-up just now.

The WinAntiVirusPro popups are next on the hit-list :)

You renamed the HijackThis folder but not the program itself, we need to rename the program file itself:

Open My Computer from the Start Menu or the Desktop
Open Local Disk (C : )
Open Program Files
Find the folder named scan.exe (this has a yellow folder icon), rename it back to HijackThis
Then, open the HijackThis folder
Now rename HijackThis (this has an icon that looks like some TNT and a detonator) to scan
If you have a shortcut to HijackThis on your Desktop, it will no longer work, so please delete it and make a new one by right-clicking scan and choosing Send To->Desktop (create shortcut)

Once complete, please post a new HijackThis log.
Here's the new log, sorry about the error, I must have read something wrong. Anyway, I'm still getting the randomly opened browser window ads, but if thas next, I'll sit back and let you tell me what to do.

Thanks again for everything.

Hi joydrop2405

Yes the popups should be gone in one or two posts :)

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • A log file will be created at C:\vundofix.txt, please post the contents of this in your next response.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.

Once that is complete:
  • Open HijackThis and choose Open the Misc Tools section
  • Click the Delete a file on reboot… button
  • Copy/paste this file and path into the box and press Open:

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winmmt32.dll

  • When asked to reboot now, say Yes
Next open HijackThis, select Open the Misc Tools section
Press the Open Uninstall Manager… button, then press Save list…
Save the Uninstall log to your deskop and include a copy in your next response.
Now press Back and Scan and then Save log to create and save a new HijackThis log.

Once complete, please post the Vundofix log, the uninstall log and a new HijackThis log.
Here are all three logs as requested. I think I did everything right this time but I still see System32 files on the HJT log…What's next? And thanks, again, because I can't say it enough.

Hi joydrop2405,

It can be a stubborn infection and sometimes it takes a couple of passes:

Please run Vundofix once more but use the add files option:
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Right-click the white box in the middle and select Add more files?
  • Copy the following paths into the boxes:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\jkhfc.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\dpnvsupq.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\khfcaaa.dll

  • Then press Add Files, Close Window and then Remove Vundo
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK
  • Post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt in your next response
Once complete, please post the new Vundofix log and a new HijackThis log.
I'm starting to get scared. There's still Windows System32 stuff in all these logs…not that I'm sure what that means. I trust you though, so let's keep going. I really do appreciate this.

Hi joydrop2405,

You can relax, the Vundo infection is dead, we'll clean the HijackThis log in this post, however, there's some more malware present so please bear with me. There's quite a lot in this post so please have a look through first and if you have questions then ask away. If you have a problem during the instructions please stop and let me know, don't continue on.

Please print/save a copy of these instructions because we will be using Safe Mode, during which time you won't have access to the internet.

First, uninstall a malware program:
Press Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs, look down the list for Outerinfo and remove it.

Some further uninstalls to consider:

You have Viewpoint Media Player installed on your system. This program is not malware but it is foistware in that it is usually installed without the user's knowledge or approval, and for this reason I recommend you remove it. If you actually use this program, I recommend you try using safe and free alternatives such as VLC Player or Media Player Classic.
To remove, open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs and remove both Viewpoint Manager (Remove Only) and Viewpoint Media Player

Your Java is outdated and is now a security risk
Go to Start » Control Panel » Add/Remove Programs
Find and remove J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
You can download and install the newest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE), from here:
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

You have a program called WildTangent installed. This is not malware, but the program does gather information about your computer, and may slow it down. I recommend you uninstall it, but it's up to you. To remove, open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs and remove WildTangent Web Driver.

Next, download and run this uninstaller:
http://www.outerinfo.com/OiUninstaller.exe

Tutorial for the uninstaller if needed

Then press Start->Run, copy/paste notepad C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts into the box and press OK
Notepad will open with your 'hosts' file. Copy the following lines and paste them to the bottom of the file:

127.0.0.1 cu.outerinfo.com
127.0.0.1 update.outerinfo.com
127.0.0.1 update2.outerinfo.com

Then close Notepad and when asked whether to save the changes, say Yes

Then, open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following lines (if present):

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {81AD508B-90B0-4485-BA0F-8D166F9C6FEA} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\jkhfc.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {DD7DFA1B-84F9-4B2D-904D-B381A3658F1D} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddccd.dll (file missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [avp] C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\win122.tmp.exe
O16 - DPF: {DF780F87-FF2B-4DF8-92D0-73DB16A1543A} (PopCapLoader Object) - http://games.pogo.com/online2/pogo/chuzzle…aploader_v6.cab
O20 - Winlogon Notify: winmmt32 - winmmt32.dll (file missing)

Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

Then download ComboFix to your desktop
  • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • Note: Do not click ComboFix's window while it's running - it may cause it to stall!
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you, please post it in your next response.
Next, download, install, and update AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5
Download the installer from this page:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
  • Save the installer to desktop
  • Double click the installer, select your language, and then select OK
  • Click through to install the program and once you press Finish the main screen will open
  • Next to Resident Shield, click Change state so that active changes to inactive
  • Right-click the AVG Antispyware tray icon, select Start with Windows to remove the check-mark and OK the prompt
  • Click the Update tab at the top, an update should be under way, if not, then under Manual Update click Start update.
  • After the update finishes the status bar at the bottom will display Update successful
  • If for any reason you cannot update from within the program, download and install the full database package from here: http://www.ewido.net/en/download/updates/
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware. Do not run a scan yet.
Reboot your computer into Safe Mode
To boot into Safe Mode, please restart your computer. Tap F8 before Windows loads.
Select Safe Mode at the top, on the screen that appears.
Sign in with your normal user account

Once in safe mode:
  • Run AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 and click on the Scanner tab at the top
  • Click the Settings tab and under How to act, change Recommended actions to Quarantine and under Reports select Do not automatically generate reports
  • Click back to the Scan tab and then click on Complete System Scan.
  • This scan can take quite a while to run, so be prepared.
  • AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 will list any infections found on the left hand side.
  • When the scan is complete, make sure Set all elements to: is set to Quarantine, if not, click the setting and choose Quarantine
  • Click the Apply all actions button. AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 will display All actions have been applied on the right hand side.
  • Click on Save Report, then Save Report As. This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again (like on the Desktop).
Now reboot your computer normally

Once complete, please post the ComboFix log, the AVG Antispyware log and a new HijackThis log.
I did everything up to:

Then download ComboFix to your desktop

I got an Internet error at that point and the page would not open. It isn'y my internet connection and even google searching the site and trying to open it from there wouldn't work, but I know it was spelled right. The only other thing I can figure is maybe there is an actual problem with the website right now. I'm going to try again in a bit, but is there somewhere else to download ComboFix safely if I can't get to the Bleeping Computers downloads?

Other than that, everything is going fine and I'm happy we're making some progress.

Thanks again.
Sorry this took so long, I was busy with work. I think everything went well, let me know.

Hi joydrop2405,

Things are looking much better, just a little cleaning to do now:

Make hidden/system files and folders visible:
Click Start -> My Computer
Select the Tools menu, click Folder Options and select the View tab
Under the Hidden files and folders heading SELECT Show hidden files and folders
UNCHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option
Click Yes to confirm and press OK

Use Windows Explorer to find and delete the following files:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\cfhkj.bak1
C:\WINDOWS\system32\cfhkj.bak2
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Yazzle1162OinUninstaller.exe

If you have any problems finding or deleting these files please let me know.

Once complete please post another HijackThis log and let me know how your computer is running.
I found and deleted the first two files, but I could not find this one: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Yazzle1162OinUninstaller.exe I opened the Program Files folder, then the Common Files folder and didn't find it. Then I searched from the Start -> Search tool as well and there was no file found to display. Where else can I look? Is there a chance it's not here? Other than that, my computer appears to be running fine. I still have difficulties logging into some websites if I try to access them from here, but that very well could be site problems and not computer issues. I'll wait for a response before I post another log. Thanks again.
