Hi Folks,

I have a popup on my desktop now after browsing in IE. This popup takes up approximately 1/4 of the screen on the right side, advertising dating, insurance, gambling, XXX and pharmacy drugs.

When it first appeared, I checked the add/remove prgrams and found a program added (i didnt write the name down, just removed it). After a reboot, the popup is still on the desktop but there isnt a program to remove anymore. I have run Spybot, MS AntiSpyware, and McAfee VirusScan in both normal mode and safe mode, and Spybot found something in safe mode which i had removed but that did not fix it. I also have downloaded a program from CNET called TuneUp Utilities 2006 and ran it; it shows nothing odd in the startup area. In fact, it shows nothing odd anywhere at the moment.

I seem to be out of options. A friend suggested I post here with my HiJack-This file and see if you good folks could help me out. The following is the logfile. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you for reading,

additional info:

yesterday i downloaded versions of Adaware and Spybot from MonsterGeeks I think the name was, according to a reply from another post on this forum. So i hope i have the current versions.

Unfortunately, neither cleared the problem. AdAware found a few items but when i cleaned them and rebooted, the popup is there still.

thanks for the reply. After a few days, however, I tried another forum similar to yours and found some info that removed the problems I had. Good luck to all with their PC problems, what a pain in the a**! -Dirk
Hi DirkConrad

Sorry we were so late with a reply, but am glad you were able to get the problem resolved.

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

Download the new Ad-Aware SE version, and follow the instructions on how to do a full scan: http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?showtopic=11150
-reboot after using Ad-Aware SE. Also while there get the VX2 plugin and follow the instructions to run it also.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
I also suggest that you delete any files from "temp", "tmp" folders. In Internet Explorer, click on "Tools" => "Internet Options" => "Delete Files" and select the box that says "Delete All Offline Content" and click on "OK" twice. Also, empty the recycle bin by right clicking on it and selecting "Empty Recycle Bin". These steps should be done on a regular basis.

And also see TonyKlein's good advice
http://castlecops.com/postlite7736-.html
So how did I get infected in the first place?

Safe surfing. :wavey:
