Good day all. I have acquired the WinFix 2005 virus. This computer is used by two teenagers who run Windows Messenger, so it is not surprising. I let my virus checker get out of date and that probably caused it to happen. By profession, I am the I.T. manager at my workplace, so I have a fair knowledge of most computer issues, but no indepth knowledge except in a few areas!!

What I have tried so far - running Ad-Aware and Spy-Bot. Running Yahoo Toolbar Anti-Spy. I then downloaded a six-month trial last week of an anti-virus program, which is currently running (it fixed 7 viruses, but said nothing about the WinFix virus). The AV program I am using is F-Secure Anti-Virus 2006. A check on the WIndows update page showed me as up-to-date with IE, and I do not use Outlook express. F-Secure uninstalled Spy-Bot and Yahho toolbar, so I no longer have those running.

Here is my log from Hijackthis 1.99-1

Hello and welcome to TomCoyote forum. Let me say a few things first, then we will have a go at the problem.

1) Bumping your post here has a negative effect. Volunteers are swamped and they look for posts with 0 replies. Pretty easy to see what a bump does.

2) I see you have found the link our administrator dgosling has set up to hopefully keep more than five days from going by.

3) I have little knowledge of F-Secure but I am surprised to hear you say they had you remove Spybot S&D. I wish you well with the product.

4) This problem you have is a variation of the VundoTrojan and from all information I have it responds to the VundoFix Atribune created for the MS-Events version. We will be finding out together as this is the first I have worked with.

5) It may take several posts to clean you up and we will get started right now if that sounds good to you, I can't stress enough the importance of following the directions exactly.

Thanks to Atribune and any others who helped with this fix.

Please print these instructions out for use in Safe Mode.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
  • This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
  • After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
  • Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
  • You will first be presented with a warning.
    It should look like this

    VundoFix V2.15 by Atri
By using VundoFix you agree that you are doing so at your own risk
    Press enter to continue….

  • At this point press enter one time.
  • Next you will see:

Please Type in the filepath as instructed by the forum staff
    and then press enter:

  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):
    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmkjh.dll
  • Press Enter to continue with the fix.
  • Next you will see:

Please type in the second filepath as instructed by the forum
    staff then press enter:

  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):C:\WINDOWS\system32\hjkmp.*
This will be the vundo filename spelt backwards. For example, if the vundo dll was vundo.dll you would enter odnuv.*
  • Press Enter to continue with the fix.
  • The fix will run then HijackThis will open, if it does not open automatically please open it manually.
  • In HiJackThis, please place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…/search/ie.html

    O20 - Winlogon Notify: pmkjh - C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmkjh.dll

  • After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis.
  • Press enter to exit the program then manually reboot your computer.
  • Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.
Download and install CleanUp!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options…"
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

Thanks…pskelley

OK, let me have a look at the logs. I do see this:

Error on downloading ActiveScanAn error has occurred downloading Panda ActiveScan.

Is is possible you were trying to download the program instead if running an online scan? The scan was in the upper right corner(Free online virus scan) It is not big thing, active scan has stopped removing the stuff anyway and we still use it in this fix because it identifies stuff others seem not to.

Looks like Atribune's fix has killed another one, just a little more clean up.

The HJT portion of the fix has failed and that usually happens when a spyware program blocks the fix. I see F-Secure has this function and probably the only way you will be able to clean this stuff out of your log is be totally offline and shutdown F-Secure. If there is a way to turn off only the spyware tool blocking the fix, have at it.

I see two new items: O2 - BHO: Nick Aracde Toolbar - {4E7BD74F-2B8D-469E-9EB4-FE6FA694B13E} - C:\PROGRA~1\NICKAR~1\NICKAR~1.DLL

I have to assume you know they are there. CastleCops says they are safe: http://www.castlecops.com/CLSID.html

The Dell lines: http://www.dell.com are clutter, I will remove them and you may keep them if you want the clutter.

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Enable hidden files&folders..reverse the process when finished.

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

If you need a good cleaner, use this one but do follow the directions:
Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Review the instructions http://www.ccleaner.com/help/tour1.asp Run CCleaner, Windows & Applications when you run the registry cleaner (Issues) you will be prompted to backup before you can remove stuff, make sure you do. Then restart the computer and post a new HJT log in this same thread along with any feedback you have. Let me know how you are running now.

You are showing a Java Update Scheduler but your Java is out of date. You should check that, it is a security issue.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\bin\jusched.exe

When you are completely finished with the removal procedure and are satisfied that the threat has been removed follow these instructions:

Your logfile looks free of malware  I still see you have not updated Java, and suggest you do this as soon as possible. If you don't know what this is: O4 - Startup: Sid Registration.lnk = D:\ATR1.exe use HJT to remove it.

Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:
