Ok, well I dunno if it's useful to say, but I've already been attacked by the Spyaxe malware before, and I removed it through the deletion of the file svchosts.dll and it seemed to work, but now it's come back to haunt me, and I can't use my old method…I've seen the help you guys hand out here, and I hope you may be able to help me, before I go on, I think it might be useful to say i already have spybot, ad-aware, zonealarm, and norton's systemworks, but i think norton has gotten messed up after the first attack.
This is finally bothering me, and now I'm literally in tears, please help.

Thanks in advance for any help.
Hi ADyukyuk:

I seriously doubt that anything you mentioned doing had any effect on SpyAxe.
The programs you ran must be updated before each use, but none of them are capable of cleaning SpyAxe, which has itself changed several times recently and even the programs designed specifically to fix it are often unable to do so.This is not the first I've seen of Nortons being disabled by this Malware.

You may want to print out or make a copy of these instructions before starting, because you will not be able to connect to the internet during most of this fix.

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Please download, install, and update the free version of Ewido Security Suite:
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  • When you run Ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  • From the main Ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
  • After the update finishes, the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful"
  • Exit Ewido. DO NOT run a scan yet.
If you do not already have Ad-Aware SE 1.06 installed, follow these download and setup instructions. Also check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Again, do NOT run a scan yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items:

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TYPE=3&t…ilion&pf=laptop
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7caf96a2-c556-460a-988e-76fc7895d284} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: SecurityToolbar - {736b5468-bdad-41be-92d0-22ae2ddf7bcb} - C:\Program Files\Security Toolbar\Security Toolbar.dll
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Sonic RecordNow!] C:\Program Files\SpyAxe\spyaxe.exe /h

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders,shown DARK and delete them, if found:

Please note: These are Programs, so must also be Uninstalled/Removed in Control Panel–>Add/Remove Programs, if still there.

C:\Program Files\Security Toolbar\Security Toolbar.dll
C:\Program Files\SpyAxe\spyaxe.exe /h

Remaining in SAFE MODE.
Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen. Your desktop and icons will disappear and then reappear again — this is normal.
Wait for the tool to complete and Disk Cleanup to finish — this may take a while; please be patient.

Next, run Ad-aware and perform a full scan. Remove everything found.

Now open Ewido Security Suite
  • Click on Scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives. You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one. If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
  • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop
  • Close Ewido
Next go to Start -> Control Panel, click Display -> Desktop -> Customize Desktop -> Web -> Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Restart your computer in normal mode.

Run the Panda online virus scan at http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm

- Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
- A new window will open…click the Check Now button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your e-mail address and click send
- Select either Home User or Company
- Click the big Scan Now button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
- When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
- When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.

Finally, restart your computer once more, and please post a new HijackThis log as well as the log from the Ewido scan and the log from the smitRem tool, which will be located at C:\smitfiles.txt.

Let us know if any problems persist.

Please Use the Post Reply feature, so I will be notified.

Note: Do not change anything in the new log. We need to see the entire log, without revisions.
Thank you Piatan for replying to my topic… Before I go on with your solution…I'd like to mention that I found out that I hadn't technically deleted the svchosts.dll file as i mentioned…The program I used to wipe it only move it to it's own folder for later deletion…a fact that I overlooked. I took care of the file, wiped empty space, and my laptop seems to be working well for now. However Norton still gives me a window when attemping to open any Office product that says "the repair feature is not functioning, please reinstall Norton"… I was going to until I heard that doing so may make things not work, so i passed, and decided to live with the window/pop-up.. I would like to know if your solution will be able to get rid of that window, or if anything that i've done to date will affect if my laptop is fixed now… However, i will still go on per your instruction, and If no reply is yet placed, I will place the logs in this very post… Edit: I would also like to point out that your link to SmitRem.exe does not work.
I just tried the link provided to SmitRem and it is working. Since that is the most important part of the fix, it must be done first. My suggestion is for the time being forget about everything else and make an effort to follow the suggestions in my previous post as closely as possible. The Malware is still present on your PC as evidenced by your latest Hijack This logfile. If you like I will point out the entries that correspond to the Malware.
Piatan, I'm sorry to be a bother, but the link you gave me is not working for me in neither firefox and IE. Anyways…Could you please repost the link to the SmitRem app? maybe even a second link if it's as important as you say it… If your could do that, it would be greatly appreciated. Also, I ran a few scans on my own in safe mode (norton,AVG,spybot,ad-aware) and looks like I cleaned up a little, but the threat is obviously still in my system. I just downloaded ewida and installed as per yur instructions, and the update thing seemed to has failed, as The statis bar says "no update available." Does that mean that It's fully updated, or that there is an error in the servers/systems?
Hi ADyukyuk

Here's a link to SmitRem, but I don't think it will help. I just tried the first link again, with Firefox and it is working. It just brings up a download.

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

If you are successful in using the link, just follow all the directions in my previous post.
If not, please let me know, because it is the part of the fix that actually removes SpyAxe.

Reference ewido. It probably has no updates since you updated it last.
Piatan,
Thanks…According to The panda scan, everything looks like it's removed, here are the logs you asked for.
The Ewida Scan found over 28,000 syware tracking cookies thanks to Norton's recycle bin protect feature, they were all deleted files, but I assure you the entire log was pure old deleted spyware cookies. I only say this because the log was too long to post here. :/

CLEAN! :)

Ok, like I said, looks like my system is clean for now. I would like to ask you on what you reccomend to fix the disabler on my norton's. It's still there unfortunately…
Regards,
ADyukyuk
Hi ADyukyuk:

I'm afraid my experience with Nortons is severely limited, at best. The information you received about it previously, would have to be qualified by facts. It makes no sense that uninstalling and then downloading it again would cause problems. If so, wouldn't every new download be having problems ? I would think that Nortons would fix something such as that without delay. If the popup is the only problem, you could live with it, until that advice you received can be qualified by facts. You might try emptying Norton of all those cookies that Ewido found. That couldn't be good, to have that many cookies anywhere.
Personally, I would get rid of those cookies that Nortons is saving, empty the virus vault and then Uninstall Nortons in Add/Remove Programs and download it fresh. But thats just my unqualified opinion, as I have never used Nortons.

Your Hijack This log is clean and SmitRem also says you are clean.

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

Download the new Ad-Aware SE version, and follow the instructions on how to do a full scan: http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?showtopic=11150
-reboot after using Ad-Aware SE. Also while there get the VX2 plugin and follow the instructions to run it also.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
I also suggest that you delete any files from "temp", "tmp" folders. In Internet Explorer, click on "Tools" => "Internet Options" => "Delete Files" and select the box that says "Delete All Offline Content" and click on "OK" twice. Also, empty the recycle bin by right clicking on it and selecting "Empty Recycle Bin". These steps should be done on a regular basis.

And also see TonyKlein's good advice

So how did I get infected in the first place?

Safe surfing. :D
