Really frustrating in a week-old PC! I guess we need to increase the security settings on Norton Internet Security.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Hi ToMiBo,

You have a CoolWebSearch infection - that's a nasty browser hijacker. :(

To clean up CoolWebSearch, we need to download and run a special program that's made just for this problem. Go to this site http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/cwshredder.zip and download CWShredder. Unzip it to any convenient PERMANENT folder (such as C:\CWS), start the program and click on "Check for updates." Download and install all updates it finds, then CLOSE YOUR BROWSER AND ALL WINDOWS EXCEPT THE ONE IT'S RUNNING IN and run it. Click on FIX at the lower right corner (rather than SCAN, which will NOT fix anything), and let it fix everything it finds. Follow the prompts as needed.

After the program finishes, turn your computer OFF for at least 30 seconds. Then reboot and post a fresh log so our experts can determine what else needs to be done.
Thanks for the help k3dc! :)

I ran cwshredder and THIS time I checked for updates as you suggested. It found the infection. Summary: Restoring Internet Pages (17 items).

Now, the new log. Anything fishy here?

Hi ToMiBo,

Well, it looks good to me, but as I'm still a trainee I will advise waiting for oue of our experts to give you the final "All-Clear." :)

In the meantime, there is something you can do to help prevent reinfection. CWS installs via the byte verifier exploit in MS JavaVM, so just surfing a page with an infected applet can install it with no action on your part (or knowledge until it's too late). Now that you have run CWShredder, it is vitally important that you go here,
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp, click "Scan for Updates" in the main frame, and download and install ALL Critical Updates recommended.

You would also do well to read this article: http://forums.net-integration.net/index.php?showtopic=3051 for information about basic security; it's very helpful.
Thanks k3dc! I appreciate what you do for us! While I'm waiting for that 'final blessing' from higher up, I will check on avaiable updates as you suggest.
That's a clean log - well done :D
